I`m on plasma 5.11.1 and when I open "plasma discover" memory usage goes from
450MB to 7.8GB/8GB, eventually filling up my swap too rendering my system
non-responsive.
RAM usage keeps on increasing until I find some way to close the plasma
discover.

I'm sorry, but how can this be a duplicate of bug 381000?

* My wallpaper is static, i've just one image
* I reported this bug on 2016-09-15, while 381000 is from 2017-06-09 and seems
to be caused by a commit done *after* i reported this.

(What is wrong is comment 18, which probably is referring to 381000.)

If the source cause is the same, i'd be happy to be wrong!

I have the same problem : the plasmashell's memory keeps growing until the
system crashes. It usually takes 2 or 3 hours to fill my 8GO of RAM. I have to
log out frequently to avoid the problem.

KDE Frameworks Version: 5.36.0
Qt Version: 5.9.1
Kernel Version: 4.12.3-1-ARCH

I can confirm the memory problem, though whether it's a leak or just memory not
being released I don't know. Plasmashell doesn't seem to grow overnight or when
the machine is idle, but any interaction with the desktop will increase
plasmashell's resident memory. At start it's usually 173Mb, then depending on
what I'm doing, will increase in 4-5Mb chunks or more. After just a few hours
it can be as much as 400-500Mb. It will continue to grow if I let it, I've had
it over a gig before, but now I usually kill plasmashell and restart it once or
twice a day.

System specs:
KDE Plasma Version: 5.8.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.28.0
Qt Version: 5.7.0
Kernel Version: 4.8.10-1-ARCH

Processors: 4xIntel Core i5-3470 CPU @ 3.20GHz
Memory: 8 GiB
Video: NVIDIA GF108 [GeForce GT 630]
Driver: NVIDIA 375.20

The system is Arch with all the latest updates from the stable repos. I've
tried the 'QSG_RENDER_LOOP=basic' with no effect. Tried changing rendering
backends (OpenGL 3.1, 2.0 and xrender), switching to the nouveau driver, no
noticeable difference. Kinfo reports almost all the used memory is held in the
heap.

Any other information I can add that may be helpful in tracking this down, just
ask.

Same as before, but with debug symbols for (what i think) relevant libraries.

plasmoidviewer: memory maps, memory status and "valgrind --tool=memcheck
--leak-check=full" log

As i found that plasmoidviewer leaks memory too, i was able to make a valgrind
log out of it (too slow for the whole plasmashell).
See that VmRSS jumped from 392504kB to 453376kB, all i did was moving, rotate
and resize it.
