Exactly. And that returns us to Square 1: Using GenericDataLocation
simply does not work for us on Mac, but KF5 apps use it all over the
place (encouraged by documentation). We will either have to stop using
it, today, or patch Qt (upstream / downstream).

So where do we go from here?

Ok, so you're talking about _installing_ to the writeable location.
Would probably work, but
1. It breaks the current separation between "vendor provided" and "user
added / customized", including the implicit protection of user files
that this provides.
2. It still does not allow for an installation to be limited to a
single arbitrary prefix, with the benefits that provides (multiple
versions / methods of installation for one application, trivial
uninstallation, easy archiving, running from thumb drives, etc.)

Well, sorry for causing confusion, then. So we agree on calling the one
thing "standalone apps (bundles)", but what is the complementary term?

Besides any code querying ApplicationsLocation is _probably_ broken at
least on Windows, irrespective of the filesystem location. Which does
not turn this into a non-issue, but into a separate issue, that IMO
should be discussed separately (and probably requires individual
fixes, instead of and "global" measure).

Again, this is about QStandardPaths::GenericDataLocation, exclusively.
_If_ applications were to actually install to the current paths defined
for that on Mac "Library/Application Support", and "~Library/Application
Support", on more, no less, _then_ clashes would start to happen. As
far as I am aware, _none_ of the current installation approaches for
KF5 does so, and as a consequence they all fail GenericDataLocation
lookup with an unpatched qt.

Which is one reason why I don't think "just install to the offical path,
then" is an acceptable solution.

Current kate "standalone" is not a good example, because it is
_circumventing_ any QStandardPaths::GenericDataLocation lookup problems
by shipping all its data compiled in. If it did not, it would fail to
find its data files with an unpatched qt, despite following documented
code patterns.

I don't care what it's called, I just need some terms to refer to this.
My monolithic, here, was referring to _all_ in one place, instead of
one app and its dependencies in one place. And yes, standalone bundles
are not really all that different from "monolithic" installs,
technically, except, it would be a typical situation to have more than
one of them at the same time.

Ah, good reminder. But it doesn't install anything under /Library, does
it? Which is why MacPorts, too, cannot support KF5 with a non-patched
QStandardPaths, right?

I don't care where files are written at runtime (as long as they can be
found again). I would like not to care about where files are written at
installation time, but the sad fact is they will not be found unless
installed to one specific absolute path.

Nope. That will simply lead us into the situation discussed near the top
of this mail. Besides, _if_ we are both talking about the option of
using an _unpatched_ Qt, then hardcoding or querying QSP makes very
little practical difference.

I understand you'd like to see ECM to continue to support your
"Unix-like" patched QSP, and why not? ECM is under "our" control
anyway, but the issue at hand is one that cannot be solved in ECM alone.

True. Any code that relies on this will likely fail on Mac _and_
Windows, so that's a valid concern. Yet, arguably, its typically going
to be a milder failure, and clearly, the prevalence is much lower
(check GneericDataLocation vs. ApplicationsLocation on lxr.kde.org). So
let's keep it in mind, but not make it a key concern while looking for
a path forward. (And in fact, I'm a bit at a loss to see how to solve
_that_, short of, again, installing everything to a single absolute
location.)

  OK, cool! That clearly shows that this patch _is_ valuable: Before we have 
~6% CPU cycle cost, now it's down to 1.5% (inclusively). This is a significant 
reduction, so I'm all for it.
  
  But note once again the stark difference in these numbers vs. what valgrind 
reports. Please, try to use `perf record --call-graph dwarf` + hotspot 
flamegraphs more in favor of callgrind/kcachegrind. Note that you can even use 
hotspot's record page for some more features, most notably the off-CPU 
profiling. This can give you more food for potential optimizations (finding 
sleep time, I/O, lock contention, ...).

pointer which is usually not available. Use `perf record --call-graph dwarf` 
instead.

  That's not the impression I got running kwrite in live and under a slow 
machine (valgrind), before I had to wait for the paste to finish, and after the 
patch not. But kwrite is still slow undoing the paste.
  
  I did run perf record -g, the same test with the patch applied after pasting 
the text 25 times and undoing with this result: F5833430: 
kwrite_perf_after_25.png .
  The same test (pasting 25 times and undoing) with --call-graph dwarf with

meaningless. Did you run perf with `--call-graph dwarf`? Better look at the 
flamegraph and search for the function you are interested in 
(Kate::TextBuffer::notifyAboutRangeChange) or use the Caller/Callee view to get 
an aggregated view of your change.

  But the hotspot screenshot clearly shows that you are spending time on 
optimizing things that are barely noticeable. You have optimized a function 
that consumes 0.3% of the CPU cycles. It now consumes only ~0.15%, at the cost 
of slightly higher memory consumption.
  
  This is the real cost. The instruction numbers reported by callgrind paint a 
very different picture (22.6% vs. 5.5%). But that's not what actually matters, 
the cycle cost is way more important.
  
  Also note that hotspot shows inclusive costs. You should get used to it, most 
notably have a look at the flamegraph and get acquainted with that way to 
visualize profiling costs.

ratio can be different from 1:1.
  Though, what about "Bounded" instead? Non-native speaker myself, but possibly 
sounds more close to real-estate boundaries also for others and might be more 
intuitive than the more abstract "constrained", which could refer to any kind 
of constraints. Also is the term used elsewhere in Qt API, also for the same 
purpose of describing limits.
  
  Any plans to have fullscreen applets one day? There it would also be some 
vertically & horizontally constrained formfactor, would/should this new 
formfactor type also be used for such, or would there then be similar variants 
like there is for "Planar" with "Application" and "MediaCenter"?

REVISION SUMMARY
  This new implementation is the fastest in the autotests.
  The replaceOrInsert in KFileItem::setName is due to renaming a file.
  The replaceOrInsert in ListJobPrivate::slotListEntries is due to Kfind.

TEST PLAN
  It should be used extensively at least one release cycle before pushing it.
  
  Passes the autotests.
  Don't assert in any kde program that uses kio.

  About the tools I use to profile:
  
  - I'm used to use slow machines, I have no problems running under valgrind.
  - When I can run a program and I'm able to repeat the workload that produces 
high cpu usage or slowness, I do like to use callgrind/kcachegrind, just 
because I get inclusive costs.
  - When a program gets slow after some time running or under some unexpected 
circumstances, yes I use perf, because I do not need to restart the program and 
I can do live measurements.
  - But I **do love** the kcachegrind view of the % of instructions for every 
method within the source code.
  
  In any case, the hotspot results pasting 10 times and undoing:

  After: F5833106: kwrite_perf_after.png

  If the stuff still works for you and is fast now, I am still for merging that.

  I've tried to extend KateViewInternal in such a way that positionFromCursor 
in KateViewAccessible becomes unnecessary, but it became a mess.
  The problem is that all the "coordinates" used there are Cursors, that are in 
the form line+column. 
  But in KateViewAccessible it uses characters from the beginning, and caching 
only in one place (positionFromCursor) does not create a mess.

  Oh and again: please start using perf/hotspot instead of callgrind. Really, 
the performance numbers you get from callgrind are just *instructions*! It 
doesn't mean "65% of CPU". It means 65% of the instructions.
  
  You are doing such good work with profiling and optimizing software, it would 
be so much better if you'd use the correct tools too!

  Removed some methods that are not used in the benchmarks.
  Added the asserts to check the type of the data at the beginning of every 
insert and replaceOrInsert.
  
  FYI: Checking the new implementation in live, so far only two asserts in 
listjob running kfind.
