However, the issue is, that ffplay is only built in multimedia/ffmpeg
when the SDL option is on -- which is off by default.

I had to downgrade kdenlive from 19.12 to 18.x due to unusable UI
[kdenlive] [Bug 417031]
I recently had to pkg upgrade, so now have kdenlive-20.04.2
which just aborts.
The stack trace does not look very helpful, except to show we die in Qt
(see below), also lots of warning/errors about things
Well, that's bizarre.
I did a pkg delete mlt, which deleted mlt, qt5-mlt, kdenlive, kdemultimedia
and kde5.
I then did a pkg install kde5, which reinstalled all 5 packages.
x264 & x265 are now options once again. Weird that a reinstall would fix it.
mp3 is still not an option under a

Could you try reinstalling/rebuilding mlt?
