Just tried kernel 3.14.0-031400rc2 but unfortunately the bug is still present.
The brightness function keys do not work.

The latest proposed kernel fails even worse than my original report. The
conditions when it fails (that is when the iwlwifi module is loaded) is
the same. However, now blacklisting iwlwifi and then manually modprobing
it after logging in locks up the system such that I cannot capture the
dmesg.

I had the same problem with my C720.
I solved it by recompiling the kernel with benson leung's haswell
chromebook patches

BUG: Bad page map in process
Okay, I am booted into the kernel @http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.11-saucy/. It works just fine. This seems to be a
mainline 3.11 kernel. Does that help close the gap for where the problem
showed up?

important to note that the touchpad actually did not work with the old
kernel either but if you installed using the chrubuntu script as most
people did then these patches were already applied for you at install
time.

Do you have a way to reproduce this, or was it a one time event?

Since I am not sure what I was doing that could have caused it, I do not
know of a way to reproduce it. Basically, I was installing software
after a fresh install of 14.04, completed that and rebooted the system.
When it came back up and I logged in the crash was there. The only thing
of note I
