I can confirm this same behavour and error as the OP using a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 motherboard. USB3.0 external drive (Seagate GoFlex) does not function in USB3.0 port, but does work in USB2 ports (at USB2 speeds). USB3 flash drives DO work in USB3 ports, but do not work at USB3.0 speeds. --
