With acpi=off, as expected there is no suspend function, battery meter
etc. Shutdown appears to hang. The wireless card does not work (but that
stopped working with the Xenial upgrade). Otherwise the system seems
fine.
I am unable to find any other combination of acpi related boot options

boot in recovery mode, the machine locks completely after displaying

Turning off power management via 'sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off' has no
effect.

It seems at wireless is often recovering after the failure, and in the

above pm_trace procedure was performed after a fresh boot.

tracebacks in the kernel log.
The laptop was freshly installed with Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic), and
disconnections were seen. I then upgraded it to Ubuntu
We have switched to the kernel in -proposed and everything looks good.
