alex, you know that by switching to EFI you did nothing? you are suppose to not only switch mode to UEFI, but ALSO install OS in UEFI mode for brightness to work on .29 kernel. Unfortunately, it seems like the fix for Brightness control in BIOS mode broke the brightness in UEFI mode. So this is

Hi Daniel. Had to do a reinstall; hadn't left any space on the drive for an EFI partition. I installed the Ubuntu 13.04 x64 release, which came with the 3.8.0-19 kernel. This had a strange result, which was that the screen was fixed to minimum (backlight off) brightness, and wouldn't change.
