asus zen ultrabook UX550VE-DB71T with 1050Ti graphics
Did anyone find a way to get Ubuntu or Mint running on the notebook? I
don't care about the NVidia for now, i can use Windows for Gaming.

Attempted with mainline generic kernel at http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.15-rc3
The issue persists. I can boot into the 4.15-rc3 kernel in recovery
mode fine. In that case it comes up with the built in intel 800x640
resolution, not the nvidia graphics.

This is a brand new laptop that shipped with windows 10. This is the
first time trying to install. I will proceed with newest kernel.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer

I was able to boot into ubuntu using recover mode (modeset listed in
line beginning with 'linux' after choosing advanced ubuntu in grub menu)
ran apport as requested in email sent to me after creating ticket.
