I see this with Ubuntu saucy (Kernel 3.11.0-12-generic 64 bit.), on a
Thinkpad T520 as well. This seems to happen when the system is under
heavy workload and I experience system freezes at the same time (So it
does seem to have a usability impact for me).
[23391.818508] ata4: exception Emask 0x10
I've already downloaded the bios to the pendrive, planning to do it, but
not upgraded yet...
I've tried before moving some usb (mouse and joypad) on the front port... for
some days I've have no freeze, but yesterday mouse and joypad freezed, while
the keyboard (attached on the rear usb port)
It looks like you were able to boot 3.11.0-12.19-generic due to the
dmesg.log attached in comment #1. That kernel is based off of upstream
3.11.3. Can you confirm that 3.11.3 boots:
3.11.3: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.11.3-saucy/

I've tested it by booting the live images (desktop edtion) .
13.10 - not working (just to test, if I can reproduce the failure with live
boot)
11.04 - working
I'am currently downloading 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat).

I built the next test kernel, up to the following commit:
862f0012549110d6f2586bf54b52ed4540cbff3a
The test kernel can be downloaded from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1237336
Can you test that kernel and report back if it has the bug or not. I
will build the next test kernel based on
Upstream reports a new patch, which is in the 3.13 kernel:
https://lkml.org/lkml/2013/10/29/588
I built a test kernel with this patch, which can be downloaded from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1237392
Can you give this kernel a test and see if it resolves this bug?
