Working on this I found by accident that I actually can reproduce:
VFS: Cannot open root device "squash:http://192.168.122.1:80/squashfs; or
unknown-block(0,0): error -6
But the way I got there lets assume some more potential reasons.

I can confirm this issue also occurred on a system that was upgraded
from 16.04.
(a) Out of curiousity, are you actually able to enable/disable your
touchpad on your laptop with Gnome on 18.04?
(b) Does not seem to affect old Unity environments but never worked
since upgrade to Bionic with Gnome
updated kernels have also failed (can't find how to add requested tags,
sorry)
