Instead of unloading/loading kernel modules a quicker way is to go to a
terminal screen and back to X11:

I had added i915.enable_gvt=1 intel_iommu=on on the kernel commandline
to enable Intel GVT-g, and connected an external monitor (with USB
devices attached, and supplying power to the laptop) via USB C.
It _seems_ that dropping the options makes it stable again, unless there

I switched to Ubuntu 16.04.2 based on 4.8 as a base LTS is better. I've tested
kernel v4.9-rc8 as bisect good and v4.10-rc8 as bisect bad but I get:

Some good revs are not ancestor of the bad rev.
