The linux headers from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline are
built with a gcc 9 version. This causes CONFIG_CC_HAS_ASM_INLINE to be

still gcc 7.4. This level

I'll not try to include more fix for this task for linux-oem 4.15.
With those commits cherry-picked on top of the current sound subsystem
tree (aside from 65263bf16116 and 3f89e62cf14c, which both revert
changes that are not in that tree), it works. The option for SOF support
on Broadwell gets deselected automatically during the build, because the
legacy driver

Some observations:
* growpart uses sfdisk without --no-tell-kernel option, meaning that it does
notify kernel about partition changes
* growpart later calls partx, which may be redundant / cause no changes or
events
* as a side note, partprobe, blockdev --rereadpt can also be used to reread
I experience the same on a Ryzen 5 2400G APU.

So, update-grub is only run if you have it there. Can you remove it, if
it's not supported/installed on disk at all? Otherwise, how does it
fail? Can you add a log for that?
I see how the version that I have on the ppa would still fail postinst
