When the issue happens, the device goes crazy and it's impossible to
perform any action. I have to close the lid (suspend), wait a few
seconds, and open the lid (resume).

Hi Adrian, if booting from the kernel fails, it obviously hangs as there's no
physical disk device to use. Is there a way to write or get the kernel messages
to another device at this point? or is my only option to build on usb, then
build a new patched kernel on the usb and boot from it ?
For those who don't use Ubuntu, please see if reverting this helps:

The delay to connect the USB devices seems to be a feature of the new
firmware or something - on MS-Windows it takes even longer, about 30
seconds for all the devices to finish connecting. Could it be that the
xhci_hcd failure is caused by the fact that the dock is now so slow to
respond?
Anyway,
It looks like the test will trigger OOM, but the autotest gets killed
this time.
I tried with older 5.3.0-24 kernel, the test_maps passed one time, but
the OOM error message can still be seen.

TL;dr: simply remove backport-iwlwifi-dkms on your Eoan system with
Intel AC 9260 installed.
First, "the entire system will freeze" is to be resolved in bug 1855825,
which will fix backport-iwlwifi-dkms in Eoan/Focal for generic Ubuntu,

There is no plan to reapply the kernel side of these fixes ahead of
18.04.4. Introducing the mdadm side of that in 18.04.4 therefore would
cause a regression in functionality:
