Just a follow up... My problem is fixed or at least figured out.
Although many with this bug have similar log output mine was definitely
hardware. SATA hard drives have extremely fragile connectors and the
connector to this particular drive with the read only problem was
slightly pushed down by an

I installed FreeDOS to a USB stick. So I now have a FAT32 USB stick I
can copy BIOS exe's onto from Ubuntu, and simply boot into. The hard
part was convincing FreeDOS to install to the USB stick... I had to
unplug the real harddrives to convince FreeDOS that USB was the primary
drive.
But
I can confirm that this also seems to solve my problems on my HP E1 AMD Vision.
I now get 5 bars of signals and no disconnections.

The firmware has lots of strange complexities, but as far as I can tell
the acpi_video0 backlight interface should fundamentally work no better,
or possibly worse, when the patch is reverted. It would be instructive
if you could verify this by trying to adjust the brightness using some
mechanism ot
Resolved it all
I changed all the permissions errors to Me Full Access to folders and
full RW and Root Full Accessto Folders/ only Read
I messed up some permissions when it all went pair shape... Seemed to be
fixed now...

I think I'm affected by this too. My machine is a Thinkpad X1 Carbon.
It was working on 12.04 without problems.
I tried the mainline Kernel v3.12-rc6-saucy, it didn't fix it.

The problem still exists in Kubuntu 13.10 witht he 3.12 kernel
requested. Tested on the P55A-UD3. The device still works great on the
same machine when passed through to a Windows 8.1 VM in Oracle
VirtualBox 4.3.
Thinkpad X61 Tablet is still able to identify the device as bootable and
Xubuntu 12
