[Kernel-packages] [Bug 153768] Re: External SATA (eSATA) removable disk not auto mounted

2015-06-07 Thread spring
I have Ubuntu 12.04 desktop, and my newly external drive(ext4) connected
to the computer through eSATA interface, is not automatically mounted
when I turn it on. Manual mounting works ok. Would be nice to have it
automatically mounted when turned on! I am planning to install the
latest desktop LTS... i hope it will be auto mounted there!

Bug description:
eSATA disks are are not auto mounted when plugged in. This is because
udisks uses a heuristic to decide if it should auto mount a drive.
The heuristic is motivated by the desire to not auto mount internal
disks/partitions that belong to other operating systems. The
heuristic currently makes the assumption that disks connected via a
usb bus are external, and disks connected with other buses ( sata,
scsi ) are internal, and thus does not mount them. This heuristic is
inherently unreliable as usb disks can potentially be internal, and
sas/sata disks can be external. Thus, the heuristic needs to be
disabled, and all unknown disks need to be auto mounted. Disks
detected but left unconfigured at install time should have entries in
/etc/fstab set to noauto to prevent their being auto mounted.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1446724] Re: server is stable under older kernel (3.2.0-29.46), but crashes under newer kernels

2015-06-07 Thread Tang Dahong
I already did these tests (that you call bisect) between kernels
3.2.0-29 and 14.02.2. As far as I can tell, every kernel after
3.2.0-31.50 causes my PC to crash, and 3.2.0-32.51 is the first kernel
release that causes this problem.

Title:
server is stable under older kernel (3.2.0-29.46), but crashes under
  newer kernels

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
My PC is stable running Ubuntu Server 12.04.5 LTS using the old kernel
3.2.0-29.46. But it crashes whenever I tried to update the kernel to
3.2.0-65.99 or higher (including 14.04.2 LTS). So somewhere between
3.2.0-29.46 and 3.2.0-65.99, changes to the kernel caused my PC to
crash (note: I have not tried kernels older than 3.2.0-65.99, so I
don't know the exact version that started to cause the crash).

I think this is likely a hardware compatibility issue since I could
not find any system logs regarding the crashes.

My PC is very old (Compaq Evo D510 SFF/07E4h, BIOS 68602 v2.14
08/15/2002), so I am not sure if this bug is worth troubleshooting.

In the meantime, I am happy with the performance of my PC running
3.2.0-29.46. But if anyone is interested in troubleshooting this bug, please
let me know.

The machine was working fine before the upgrade, now it is almost
impossible to use it... I see Wait in Top always above 60%; in dmesg

others). LVM related commands (e.g. lvdisplay) almost always hung at
the terminal. I also see in ps some kernel workers almost constantly
stuck in D state. Also, the machine takes ages to shutdown.

Issue remains there also if I disable X (switch off the X login
manager, sddm) and check at the console.

Sorry I cannot provide details with apport, but the machine has been
switched off and I will not be able to take it up again before a few
  days from now.

The symptom I am observing may also be a sign of failing hardware, so
please leave the bug as unconfirmed until I make some more tests or
someone provide details on similar issues. In the meantime I would

there anything specific that has changed between utopic and vivid, I

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1383184] Re: Atheros Qualcomm Killer N1525 Wireless-AC [168c:003e] not supported

2015-06-07 Thread Jane Doe
Hello everyone,
I followed the steps in #150, and after entering the make -jX command, I get
asked a lot of things I don't understand, it's the first time I am compiling a
kernel.
Is this how it should be? I just pressed enter on everything, since I guess
this sets up the default values...?

I'm running Ubuntu 15.04 on an Acer Aspire VN7-571G (dual-boot with Windows
8.1).
I entered make -j4, I have the Intel Core i7-5500U 2.4 which has 2 cores but
is able to behave like it had 4 cores. Should I've been entering make -j2
instead?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1451277] Re: Extremely high IOWait and processes hungs after utopic-vivid upgrade with Iomega Zip drive (IDE)

2015-06-07 Thread Sergio Callegari
I would also rise priority, since the issue

- makes it often impossible to shut down the machine cleanly, requiring a hard
reset which may result in data loss;
- I imagine that it can make it quite hard to install security updates from
ubuntu as any update of the kernel package tends to result in the system
hanging at the make initramfs phase, that probably queries all system drives.

Title:
Extremely high IOWait and processes hungs after utopic-vivid upgrade
  with Iomega Zip drive (IDE)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
On Kubuntu, 64 bit AMD Phenom2 machine with 4 cores, and old (Geoforge 7025)
Nvidia graphics.
Using LVM. Machine also has a 2 disk software raid (mirroring).

The machine was working fine before the upgrade, now it is almost
impossible to use it... I see Wait in Top always above 60%; in dmesg
after a few minutes that the machine is up even if the machine does
nothing. I see hung processes (typically vgs, but occasionally also

In the meantime I would
like to see if others are experiencing a similar serious issue. Is
there anything specific that has changed between utopic and vivid, I
  should look into?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1451277] Re: Extremely high IOWait and processes hungs after utopic-vivid upgrade with Iomega Zip drive (IDE)

2015-06-07 Thread Sergio Callegari
3.17.0 impossible to test because, for some reason, it fails to boot to
X with the nvidia proprietary driver, so it is hard to test in realistic
conditions.

In any case, I would say that the issue has been introduced in the 3.16
- 3.17 transition.

Can this be reported upstream?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1461986] Re: can't change usb_charge attribute in /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop

2015-06-07 Thread Black
I've tested on 4.1.0-040100rc6-generic, and the results are the same.
Also, I've lost my wifi, which was the only problem I encountered during
the test.

Title:
  can't change usb_charge attribute in /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I am on a Sony VAIO svf43142sn. My laptop has the ability to leave a USB port
powered on even after shutdown to charge other devices. The value of
/sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/usb_charge is 1, but the USB port is not
powered on. Also when I tried toggling it to 0 it resets back to 1 when I check
again using cat. So I restarted the module sony-laptop with debug flags on.
When I try:
  echo -n 0 | sudo tee -a /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/usb_charge

these are the curresponding kernel logs, implying that it was a success:
  [ 9121.879908] sony_laptop: found handle 0x0155 (offset: 0x07)
  [ 9121.881386] sony_laptop: __call_snc_method: [SN07:0x0107]
  [ 9121.881394] sony_laptop: called SN07 with 0x0107 (result: 0x)

But if I cat the value of usb charge, the change is not reflected, and I see
this when I dmesg:
  [ 9346.202318] sony_laptop: found handle 0x0155 (offset: 0x07)
  [ 9346.202489] sony_laptop: __call_snc_method: [SN07:0x0007]
  [ 9346.202494] sony_laptop: called SN07 with 0x0007 (result: 0x0001)

If it matters, when i simply echo 1, I will get this:
  [ 9879.675844] sony_laptop: found handle 0x0155 (offset: 0x07)
  [ 9879.676878] sony_laptop: __call_snc_method: [SN07:0x00010107]
  [ 9879.676885] sony_laptop: called SN07 with 0x10107 (result: 0x)

The entire debug message when I restart the module(sony-laptop) is given
here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/11551226/ . I have asked the same as a question
on askubuntu.com. It has got a other information if you need it:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1450396] Re: Gigabyte P35-DS3: does not stay suspended

2015-06-07 Thread Jan Rathmann
Some progress: After I failed to identify the responsible hook by
running them before 'systemctl suspend' I had the idea to test vice
versa if I would be able to reproduce the undesired wakeups with pm-
suspend by successively disabling its hooks (=moving the files in
/usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d to another directoy).

And I was successfull: The hook that seems to be responsible for correct
suspend on my system is 00powersave. If all other hooks are enabled
except this one, the bug also appears with pm-suspend. And on the other
hand if 00powersave is enabled (even if it is the only hook enabled), I
was not able to reproduce the bug with pm-suspend.

Title:
Gigabyte P35-DS3: does not stay suspended

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Hello,

using Suspend-to-RAM on my system has stopped working reliably on
Vivid when booting with Systemd. When I try to suspend my PC the
  following happens:

  - PC turns off
  - PC unwantedly wakes up (turns on) by itself again. This time span until it
turns on again can reach from a second (almost immediately) until two or three
minutes.
  - In a few cases (25%), the PC stays suspended properly.

A way to workaround this problem is to boot my PC with Upstart instead
of Systemd, then this problem never happens (and has never happened in
any of the previous Ubuntu versions since 2008). Thus it seems to be a
  bug somehow related to Systemd.

Other steps I have tried to solve the problem (without any success):

  - Checking BIOS settings, all options are set that way that the PC should
never wake up by any event other than pressing the power button.
  - Checking by running cat /proc/acpi/wakeup | grep enabled if any device
could cause wake up events. This lists my USB controller, but deactivating it
(with commands like echo USB0 /proc/acpi/wakeup) had no success on the
problem. Also suspend while running Upstart works fine despite the USB
controller listed as enabled.

In the system logs I could see no hint what causes the undesired wake-
  ups.

Allthough there is one factor which seems to have a certain influence:
If I close programs like Pidgin, Skype or Firefox that cause
continuous network traffic, the chance is higher that my PC will stay
  suspened (while runinng Systemd).

  Kind regards,
  Jan

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1446724] Re: server is stable under older kernel (3.2.0-29.46), but crashes under newer kernels

2015-06-07 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Tang Dahong, the next step is to fully commit bisect from kernel
3.2.0-29.46 to 3.2.0-65.99 in order to identify the last good kernel
commit, followed immediately by the first bad one. This will allow for a
more expedited analysis of the root cause of your issue. Could you
please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection
?

Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit
bisecting.

Thank you for your understanding.

Title:
server is stable under older kernel (3.2.0-29.46), but crashes under
  newer kernels

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

But if anyone is interested in troubleshooting this bug, please
let me know.

2015-06-07 Thread Markus Mitsch
Public bug reported:

hallo. when i go to suspend to ram sometimes usb ports(only front, cause it is
a seperate pci-e card) loose functionality and dmesg shows:
xhci_hcd :06:00.0: Host took too long to start, waited 16000 microseconds.
xhci_hcd :06:00.0: PCI post-resume error -19!

xhci_hcd :06:00.0: HC died; cleaning up

xhci_hcd :06:00.0: HC died; cleaning up

pm_run_callback(): pci_pm_resume+0x0/0xc0 returns -19

PM: Device :06:00.0 failed to resume async: error -19

when i suspend to ram the first time the usb disk attached to the usb
doesnt work properly but it is only because it changes name from
/dev/sdc to /dev/sdd.

  Confirmed

Bug description:
After updating from 8.04 to 12.04 I cannot use rfcomm without sudo.

I've already added the user to group 'dialout' .

  Temporary I tried to change udev.rules (KERNEL==rfcomm[0-9]*,
GROUP=dialout, MODE=666)  but this doesn't
solve the problem so I removed it again.

Here the commands I used :

  burki@orion:/$ rfcomm connect 1 00:12:6F:08:98:FF

  Connected /dev/rfcomm1 to 00:12:6F:08:98:FF on channel 1

In another terminal while connection is running ...

  burki@orion:/$ ls -l /dev/rfcomm1

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1461986] Re: can't change usb_charge attribute in /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop

2015-06-07 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Black, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from
the very top line at the top of the page (the release names are
irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder)
following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds ? It will allow
additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the test did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into
the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test
the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version
specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please
add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil
icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where XY and Z are numbers corresponding to the kernel version.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of
kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

Title:
  can't change usb_charge attribute in /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1383184] Re: Atheros Qualcomm Killer N1525 Wireless-AC [168c:003e] not supported

2015-06-07 Thread Gregor Plata
the solution described by Dev in comment #150 works for me without any drops or
other serious issues but the wi-fi performance is only about 35%-40% of the
performance on windows on the same machine downloading the same file from the
same server .
Is there any chance (intention) to optimize the performance of the ath10k
driver ?

Bug description:

After wake up the bluetooth adapter is on, when I do 'lsusb' I can see:

but the graphic configurator tells No bluetooth adapter found.

Title:
USB to Ethernet adapter not working on USB 3 port but OK on USB 2 port

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Hello,

my new laptop is a Dell XPS 11, with no ethernet port. So I bought an
USB to Ethernet adapter. It also has two more USB 3 ports. When
connected on my laptop, I'm unable to acquire an IP through my DHCP,
but a new network interface is automatically raised. I tried to set
manually an IP, but I cannot ping any system which normally honors
ping requests. The surprising point is that when I connect the same
adapter on an old laptop (Dell E4300), running the same version of
Ubuntu 14.04 (both systems are fully up-to-date), it perfectly works !
The only difference I can see is that my old laptop has only USB 2
  ports...

Additionally, the USB hub works on both computers, and I connected the
adapter to 2 desktop computers :
  - one with an additional USB 3 card : it works ;
  - one with embedded USB 3 port : same error as with the modern laptop.

So it really seems to be a problem related to the way USB 3 is handled
by Ubuntu 14.04, but perhaps only with some specific chipsets. I
cannot find what chipset is on the mainboard of my laptop (it is an
Intel one, for sure, since the CPU is a Core i5-4210Y), but my desktop
PC as an Intel Z97 chipset.

Here is what I read tailing kern.log when connecting the adapter. Note the
errors near the end :

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1383184] Re: Atheros Qualcomm Killer N1525 Wireless-AC [168c:003e] not supported

2015-06-07 Thread Ming
Hey, I figured out my problem. Turns out that some of the header files
and code were broken (had a padlock on the icon) or were missing
altogether. I made new copies of the file with the same code and
formatting. After that, there were no problems running the command: make
-jX

@Jane Doe, Isaiah:
I found this thread that may address your concern. I originally had to answer
the questions as well. But I ran the command

make olddefconfig

before running

make -jX.

Here's the thread in which your problem may be addressed. (Note, I used the
second post)
http://serverfault.com/questions/116299/automatically-answer-defaults-when-doing-make-oldconfig-on-a-kernel-tree

My wireless card is working now. Thanks everyone.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1462822] Re: Kernel configuration parameter CONFIG_DEVMEM is not set, it should be

2015-06-07 Thread Doug Smythies
** Description changed:

There is a relatively new kernel configuration parameter, CONFIG_DEVMEM.
- I do not understand why, but for some reason is not set for Ubuntu, and
therefore dmidecode does not work.
+ I do not understand why, but for some reason is not set for Ubuntu, and
therefore dmidecode does not work.
I think that, in general, we want dmidecode to work.

  I found this:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2015-May/057250.html,
and so had expected it to be set to yes by now, but in Kernel 4.1RC6 it still
isn't.
(And yes, I am talking mainline kernels here, which I know are not supported,
but I am just trying to help.)

Is there a reason to have it not set?

On IRC apw asked me to enter this bug report and to assign it to him.

- By the way, I compiled 4.1RC6 with CONFIG_DEVMEM=y and now dmidecode
- works fine.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1452165] Re: currupted btrfs breaks both recovery and boot

If you know a way to reliably get btrfs corupted than you can test it
yourself on dedicated VM.

Title:
currupted btrfs breaks both recovery and boot

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
If btrfs volume is corrupted (separate /home partition, not even /
!!!) than not only booting ubuntu in normal AND recovery mode is
impossible but even liveusb fails as well. The recovery drops to shell
but it's impossible to fix btrfs - there's unkillable mount -t
btrfs... process hanging and kernel regularly pukes with btrfs-
transacti blocked for 120 seconds message.

This is beyond horrible - the whole purpose of recovery mode is to fix
errors like that, errors on partition which is not used to boot from
  (e. g. /home) should never ever break it. Alternatively you could add
new mode to grub menu - smth like recovery which actually works or
  something like that.

The workaround is to add 'break=premount' to grub command line and fix
btrfs with 'btrfs check --repair /dev/dm-' from initramfs.

  Found on xubuntu 15.04 x86_64.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1462822] [NEW] Kernel configuration parameter CONFIG_DEVMEM is not set, it should be

2015-06-07 Thread Doug Smythies
Public bug reported:

There is a relatively new kernel configuration parameter, CONFIG_DEVMEM.
I do not understand why, but for some reason is not set for Ubuntu, and
therefore dmidecode does not work.

By the way, I compiled 4.1RC6 with CONFIG_DEVMEM=y and now dmidecode
works fine.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1454253] Re: external usb breaks suspend

2015-06-07 Thread god
apport information

** Description changed:

After booting xubuntu 15.04 it's possible to suspend it the normal way
BUT - only until you've plugged external usb hard drive. After that
(even if it was unmounted and removed) it becomes impossible: the system
goes to suspend briefly (for bout 1 second) but immediately wakes up for
  no apparent reason.

I suspect there's some weird bug in xfce power management - is there a way to
disable it alltogether and rely on systemd directly instead?

Specifically frame #6, it appeared to be endlessly waiting for a vblank. So I
added the following to /etc/environment:

export CLUTTER_VBLANK=none

I have just done suspend and resume 20 times without issue, whereas
previously I could trigger this bug after 3 or 4 on average.

Title:
periodic find task slow ubuntu to death

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Periodically something starts 'find' program in the background with
readdir smth in options and it slows down ubuntu to the point the
music and video got hiccups, mouse lags etc. I suspect it's smth
related to package or locatedb updates but can't pinpoint the culprit
  yet.

Anyway, the bugis in slowdown - background tasks should never-ever
affect the interactive programs running by user. Ideally they should
be started in dedicated, heavily policed systemd slice.

Title:
  external usb breaks suspend

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After booting xubuntu 15.04 it's possible to suspend it the normal way
BUT - only until you've plugged external usb hard drive. After that
(even if it was unmounted and removed) it becomes impossible: the
system goes to suspend briefly (for bout 1 second) but immediately
wakes up for no apparent reason.

I suspect there's some weird bug in xfce power management - is there a way to
disable it alltogether and rely on systemd directly instead?

Title:
currupted btrfs breaks both recovery and boot

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
