[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1555351] Re: High load freezes ubuntu completely everytime (have to reboot)
I would like to add, this is probably a problem with the Linux kernel as I have seen this on other systems. I have observed it so far on: Ubuntu Live USB, ArchLinux, and Gentoo. This problem seems to only occur when it is being compiled with the X server running. The freezes tend to be a solid color, purple on Ubuntu and gray on Gentoo with Cinnamon. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1555351 Title: High load freezes ubuntu completely everytime (have to reboot) Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Whenever an intensive application runs which consumes lots of memory or hard drive i/o, Ubuntu freezes completely. It is even impossible to kill the offending task. Only "solution" is then to wait for the application to finish, or restart PC. Windows doesn't have this issue as bad as Ubuntu, in that Windows is always somewhat responsive, and you can attempt to kill the intensive application to recover the system. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1552985] Re: [Dell Inspiron 14 3000 Series] System hangs on poweroff
I tried a Live USB using the Lubuntu 16.04 iso. Hardware: Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop; Core2Duo; 64-bit, 4 GB RAM; USB 2 currently running Lubuntu 14.04 fully updated; uname -a: Linux vasa1-Inspiron-1545 3.13.0-83-generic #127-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 11 00:25:37 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I used mkusb version 10.5.1 (http://ppa.launchpad.net/mkusb/ppa/ubuntu/ trusty/main amd64 Packages) to make the Live USB on an 8 GB Transcend USB 2 pendrive. If the Live USB is made without persistence, while everything runs fine, shutdown doesn't work. The screen blanks and a cursor flashes at the top left corner of the screen. I can wait for a few minutes but still nothing happens. I need to long-press the laptop's power button to shut down. However, I can confirm that using the same version of mkusb and iso to create a persistent Live USB, the shutdown is normal. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1552985 Title: [Dell Inspiron 14 3000 Series] System hangs on poweroff Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Xubuntu 14.04.4 LTS Linux 3.13.0-79-generic #123-Ubuntu SMP Fri Feb 19 14:27:58 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux When shutting down the system, it gets stuck on the Xubuntu splash screen. I have to press the power button for a while to have it shut down. This is a dual boot system: Windows 10 and Xubuntu 14.04. I updated BIOS version to A10 a couple of days ago. some more info: - it happened a few times when running apt-get update or upgrade (from a terminal) - does not seem to be trigger a vt terminal switching as reported here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1542939 I ran an apt-get autoclean after which seemed to clean up a lot, haven't kept output unfortunately. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1555775] Re: WiFi + wired ethernet broken after suspend on Alienware 15 R2
Andy Barry, given how wide spread the effects are (both wired and wireless) a more lower level cause may be the culprit here. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1523108] Re: Bluetooth doesn't work on ASUS Zenbook UX301LAA
Vasya Pupkin, the instructions to write a letter to bluetooth maintainers was provided in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1523108/comments/6 . Unfortunately, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Bugs is a legacy page. However, due to a recent flurry of permission restrictions in response to randomers abusing the openness of Ubuntu's infrastructure, I don't presently have access to fix this. Given a comprehensive strategy is actively being developed to address this, I'm patiently waiting for that to conclude. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1523108 Title: Bluetooth doesn't work on ASUS Zenbook UX301LAA Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: It's not possible to make bluetooth work. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1172852] Re: USB keyboard and mouse don't work
Affects me too. Lubuntu 14.04 LTS Live CD performs well with keyboard and mouse. I use a Pentium 4 desktop PC from 2003 with 512 MB RAM. After install of Lubuntu 14.04 LTS over an old 12.04 onto hard disk my PS/2 keyboard and USB mouse are no longer recognized. Thus cannot log in when the X login dialog appears. The hint of @Nikolai Kristiansen showed the good direction, but was not so simply realizable as in the given link. When running the Live system I cannot install any package to the hard disk. So I firstly had to try to boot from the hard disk. I had to acquire the GRUB boot menu by holding down the SHIFT key when booting. Then I booted an older kernel linux-13.0-74-generic instead of the lastly installed linux-3.16.0-4-686-pae or linux-3.16.0-4-586. On a really fresh install I would not have it. With this kernel keyboard and mouse were functional. When running the installed system with the older kernel from hard disk, `uname -r`did not help, as it returns the kernel version of the currently running system. With Synaptic I searched for linux-image, but did not find anything for the kernel version 3.16.0-4 of the distribution Lubuntu 14.04. Instead I installed the newest version of 3.16, that are linux- image-3.16.0-67-generic and linux-image-extra-3.16.0-67-generic. This updated also the boot menu to include the added kernel. When booting with this kernel version, keyboard and mouse work OK. Still I have to change the boot default. So at least now my system is working, but I am unsure, if my modifications lead to an insecure system. Thanks to all, who tried to help. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1172852 Title: USB keyboard and mouse don't work Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I am installing Ubuntu 13.04 from a live USB key. I downloaded the stable amd64 iso of Ubuntu 13.04 after it was released today. It runs beautifully from a live USB key. However, after installing the OS to my hard drive and rebooting, the keyboard and mouse both fail to work. They are standard USB input devices (US layout) which have worked for years on other versions of Red Hat and Ubuntu. They work fine with the live USB version of the OS. I can't even log into the computer to collect bug data. I've tried reinstalling several times, changing the install options. Installing fresh on this computer, keeping only my old /home partition, and disallowing the installation of third-party software still produces the error. The same system has run several previous versions of Ubuntu without problems. Thanks for your help. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1559723] Re: soft lockup during btrfs balance
As described in my previous comment, the fs was available in read-write mode again. I added another disk to the btrfs and with the additional space I was able to rerun and successfully finish the btrfs balance operation (as described in https://www.slicewise.net/debian/balancierung-eines-vollen- btrfs-dateisystems/ ): btrfs balance start x Done, had to relocate 2797 out of 2797 chunks So my file system is completely rescued now. To sum it up: There is no way I could reproduce this error again with a recent kernel. All I can say is that Kernel 4.2.0-27.32~14.04.1-generic 4.2.8-ckt1 ran into unexpected behaviour when doing a btrfs balance: Expected Result: Error "enospc errors during balance" (at least) Actual Result: Kernel bug in dmesg, Filesystem goes read-only, Input/Output errors occur, many directories are not readable even in read-only mode, even ls does not work. It seems as if the system totally screwed it up. Suggested Fix: All of these problems should be avoidable because the later reboot "healed" them (Error "enospc errors during balance" reported, fs mounted read-write, but btrfs balance still fails, which is totally fine at this point) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1559723 Title: soft lockup during btrfs balance Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I performed a btrfs balance for a disk which ran out of space. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1552985] Re: [Dell Inspiron 14 3000 Series] System hangs on poweroff
Booted via grub-n-iso shutdown works for me, but not when the pendrive was created by cloning the current Lubuntu Xenial i386 daily iso file, xenial-desktop-i386.iso Today I tested with USB-creator-gtk 0.3.2 and mkusb, but can get the same result with other cloning tools, e.g. gnome-disks, dd. In other words, my live drive is affected when booted from a cloned system, but not from a grub-n-iso system made from the same iso file. I suspect that this bug is the same or closely related to the bug that also affects virtual machines, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/casper/+bug/966480 It is described as a race condition by Chris Bainbridge: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/casper/+bug/966480/comments/58 -o- Details: I tested this in a laptop bought 2013 (that I am often using for iso testing), http://www.toshiba.se/laptops/satellite-pro/c850/satellite-pro-c850-19w/ and in a desktop computer with the following motherboard bought 2008, http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M2NVM_DVI/ A Sandisk Cruzer blade 4 GB USB drive cloned to a 'live-only' system with USB-creator-gtk 0.3.2 and mkusb is affected by this bug in both those computers. The same USB drive made into a grub-n-iso system with the same Lubuntu daily iso file according to the link http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2259682&p=13302278#post13302278 or made into a persistent live drive with mkusb according to this link https://help.ubuntu.com/community/mkusb/persistent can be shut down or rebooted properly (so these systems booted via grub are not affected). PS. Until this bug is squashed (and in other cases where a linux system is unresponsive)I recommend SysRq + r e i s u b described in the following link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key DS. It hanged when trying to shut down from both Windows and Xubuntu. After installing the firmware update from http://www.dell.com/support/article/mx/es/mxbsdt1/SLN300281/EN, the computer shuts down correctly from Windows, but still gets stuck when trying to shut down from Xubuntu, no matter if using the "Shutdown" button or running "shutdown -h now" or "poweroff" from a terminal. I found a similar bug here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1341925?comments=all, but the solution mentioned there did not work for me, also, I don't have any problems when rebooting the computer, just when trying to shut down. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1547838] Re: ADMtek ADM8511 "Pegasus II" USB Ethernet causes oops
I have narrowed it further to these builds. 3.9.0-7.15 - good 3.10.0-0.6 - bad I've managed to fetch the saucy repo. git says there's around 14,000 commits between these two tags?! I'm going to first verify that when I build both of these tags I get the same behaviour as I do with the binary builds. Then I'll start the git bisect properly. Unfortunately, as slow as my internet is, downloading kernels is quite a bit faster than building them appears to be :( -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1547838 Title: ADMtek ADM8511 "Pegasus II" USB Ethernet causes oops Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: This is a rather old USB ethernet adapter. It worked fine for me with older distributions (including Ubuntu 10.04). I noticed it causing problems after upgrading to 14.04 and stopped using it as a result (since I needed reliable USB ethernet for work). I was also not completely sure if it was this device causing the issue or interplay between this device and a number of other networking USB devices that were used at work. I'd like to use this ethernet adapter at home but the machine is running Ubuntu 14.04 and the issue persists. I have collected some information that might help. I'm happy to try more things to collect information if that will help. I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 server 64-bit. I just rebooted so I'm running the latest updates. I was told to run ubuntu-bug linux but I'm not sure how much useful stuff is included in that. I'm including the kernel log which has some bad stuff happening in it. Not sure if it got the system-freezing oops or just the errors leading up to that. It feels like a bug in the driver that corrupts memory because I see issues with network-related things (eg. a ping crashed, but the next ping didn't), leading to a full-system freeze. This machine has been happily running Ubuntu for a looong time (though it was only recently upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04, previously it had been running 10.04). I have not had stability issues with the machine but plugging in the USB Ethernet reliably makes it freeze within minutes. The symptoms also match what I saw on my machine at work. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1552985] Re: [Dell Inspiron 14 3000 Series] System hangs on poweroff
I have seen indications that it makes a difference which tool or method was used to create the USB boot drive. So please tell us which tool was used when this bug appeared, as if you get different results when trying to shut down, when the USB drive was created with different tools or methods.
