[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1834771] Re: No HDMI-audio after kernel 4.15.-0.50
Hmm, I'm running bone stock LM 20.1 and the kernel is 5.4.0-80 (auto- updated a few days ago). In the last several months, the bug has been triggered a few times -- not often, and always after resume from suspend. On reboot, everything works. Hate to say I spent days working on a fix for this, and only managed to get a workaround going. So feeling your pain. But the workaround did function reliably. (Not sure why no joy with your setup.) Choice of distro is very personal; a user should not be forced into one because hardware won't work with any other. ... [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1834771] Re: No HDMI-audio after kernel 4.15.-0.50
Thanks Uriel Tunn, but that fix didn't work for me. So, I followed your advice and tried an upgrande to another distro. I tried... -> Linux Mint 20.2 Uma (Kernel 5.11) -> MX Linux 19.4.1 -> Manjaro xfce 21.0.7-210614 (Kernel 5.10) -> Endeavour-2021.04.17 (Kernel 5.11) -> Pop_OS_21.04_amd64 -> Fedora_Workstation_Live_x86_64_34-1.2 -> Ubuntu 21.04 desktop amd64 (Kernel 5.11) -> Ubuntu 18.04 desktop amd64 (Kernel 5.4.0-42-generic) None of the above work with a DVI/HDMI or Display Port/HDMI adapter. HOWEVER, seeing as i had just installed Ubuntu 18.04, I started to install some kernels on that build Sure as hell 4.15.0-041500-generic - work perfectly, DVI/HDMI or Display Port/HDMI adapter listed as an options in Sound Settings 4.18.0-041800-generic - work perfectly, DVI/HDMI or Display Port/HDMI adapter listed as an options in Sound Settings 4.18.10-041810-generic - work perfectly, DVI/HDMI or Display Port/HDMI adapter listed as an options in Sound Settings 4.18.16-041816-generic - work perfectly, DVI/HDMI or Display Port/HDMI adapter listed as an options in Sound Settings 4.18.19-041819-generic - work perfectly, DVI/HDMI or Display Port/HDMI adapter listed as an options in Sound Settings THEN 4.18.20-041820-generic - would not even boot with Ubuntu - had to use the recovery kernel option, and when i got into the main screen, i checked the sound settings, and sure as hell neither DVI/HMDI nor Display Port/HDMI were listed anymore! Next I checked 4.19.0-041900-generic - while this didn't give any problems booting, when i got into the main screen, i checked the sound settings, neither DVI/HMDI nor Display Port/HDMI were listed anymore. So, yes, whatever happened in 4.18.20-041820 has broke the sound for my HDMI adapters and never been fixed since. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1834771 Title: No HDMI-audio after kernel 4.15.-0.50 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I've got no HDMI-audio. ** Package changed: linux (Ubuntu) => ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) ** Tags added: rls-ii-incoming -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1938588 Title: Ubuntu Server 18.04.5 install fails: TSC_DEADLINE disabled due to errata Status in ubuntu-meta package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: We have several factory-fresh Mitac industrial motherboards (https://www.mitacmct.com/IndustrialMotherboard_PH13FEI_PH13FEI) that we are unable to install Ubuntu Server 18.04.5 on. When we boot from the installation media we get the following error and the installation hangs (see attached screenshot, I've transcribed the error below too) ``` [0.00] [Firmware Bug]: TSC_DEADLINE disabled due to Errata; please update microcode to version: 0x52 (or later) [0.157025] ACPI Exception: AE_BAD_PARAMETER, Could not install PciConfig handler for Root Bridge PCI0 (20170831/evrgnini-241) ``` Googling the microcode bug, the normal advice appears to be "boot into an older, functioning kernel, update the `intel-microcode` package, and then reboot." But in this situation there is no older kernel to boot into; there is no OS installed _at all_ on these boards yet. I'm booting from a USB drive loaded with the latest version of Ubuntu Server 18.04. The only work-around I've found that works so far is to install Ubuntu Desktop 18.04, which can boot successfully on these boards, perform the minimal desktop installation, then use the desktop install to update the `intel-microcode` package, reboot, and then finally install Ubuntu Server. This is obviously not convenient needing to install a complete desktop OS just so I can update the microcode, and then immediately wiping it to install what I wanted in the first place. I have not tried Ubuntu 20.x or 21.x; I need to use Ubuntu 18.04 because these motherboards are being installed into robots that will be running ROS Melodic (ROS Noetic runs on 20.04, but these robots don't have Noetic support yet). I have tried the following to modify the Ubuntu Server ISO, without success: 1- Adding the microcode to initrd --- I unpacked the contents of the Ubuntu Server ISO, decompressed install/initrd.gz, and used the bash script here https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/x86/microcode.html to add the intel-microcode firmware to the image. Then I recompressed initrd.gz, and rebuild the ISO using xorisso. This did not have any effect: Ubuntu Server still encountered the same error when trying to install. 2- Using initrd from Ubuntu Desktop 18.04.5 -- I downloaded & unpacked Ubuntu Desktop 18.04.5 and replaced Ubuntu Server's install/initrd.gz with Ubuntu Desktop's casper/initrd (updating txt.cfg and grub.cfg to load the uncompressed initrd instead of the .gz that Ubuntu Server normally uses). Then I rebuilt the Ubuntu Server with xorisso again. The resulted in the system booting, but immediately dropping into an initramfs busybox shell, saying boot files were missing. I assume this is because Ubuntu Server uses the `boot=casper` flag in order to boot into the live desktop session. At this point I'm running out of ideas for how to be able to make Ubuntu Server's installation media work with these boards. Ubuntu Desktop has no problem booting on them, so it's obviously something specific to the Ubuntu Server image, but I'm not sure exactly what or how to fix it. If you need any additional information/logs/etc... please let me know and I'll be happy to provide them. Thanks! The rules were with ct actions and chains tc-policy was set to skip-hw. Without the commit the traffic doesn’t work when hw-offload was true (offload to tc sw only) but does work with hw-offload false (ovs dp). * What it could break. Traffic not working in some cases using internal ports and CT. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1934304] Re: i2c-mlxbf.c: prevent stack overflow in mlxbf_i2c_smbus_start_transaction
** Tags removed: verification-needed-focal ** Tags added: verification-done-focal -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux-bluefield in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1934304 Title: i2c-mlxbf.c: prevent stack overflow in mlxbf_i2c_smbus_start_transaction Status in linux-bluefield package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in linux-bluefield source package in Focal: Fix Committed Bug description: SRU Justification: [Impact] There could be stack overflow in mlxbf_i2c_smbus_start_transaction(). memcpy() is called in a loop while 'operation->length' upper bound is not checked and 'data_idx' also increments. More details: The operation length is verified by the caller functions so it cannot exceed I2C_SMBUS_BLOCK_MAX bytes (32 bytes) for each operation that is a part of the write. Data_desc array is 128 bytes in size. So potentially a request which consists of 4 writes, 32 bytes each can trigger an off-by-one or off-by-two overflow, because the first byte of data_desc is used by addr, effectively decreasing the available data_desc buffer size by one. Functions like mlx_smbus_i2c_block_func() that prepare the request also set the length of the first write operation to one and store the command id there, so the target buffer size again decreases data_desc by one, making it two bytes less than expected. [Fix] * Add a check for "operation->length" and data_idx and return error if reached upper bound. [Test Case] * Test the i2c-mlxbf.c driver using IPMB functionality. [Regression Potential] This fix returns a negative value to indicate that a transaction has failed. So it will catch more transactions failures. ** Tags removed: verification-needed-focal ** Tags added: verification-done-focal -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux-bluefield in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1934401 Title: Control netfilter flow table timeouts via sysctl Status in linux-bluefield package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in linux-bluefield source package in Focal: Fix Committed Bug description: * Explain the bug(s) TCP and UDP connections may be offloaded from nf conntrack to nf flow table. Offloaded connections are aged after 30 seconds of inactivity. Once aged, ownership is returned to conntrack with a hard coded tcp/udp pickup time of 120/30 seconds, after which the connection may be deleted. The current hard-coded pickup intervals may introduce a very aggressive aging policy. For example, offloaded tcp connections in established state will timeout from nf conntrack after just 150 seconds of inactivity, instead of 5 days. In addition, the hard-coded 30 second offload timeout period can significantly increase the hardware insertion rate requirements in some use cases. * Brief explanation of fixes This patchset provides the user with the ability to configure protocol specific offload timeout and pickup intervals via sysctl. The first and second patches revert the existing non-upstream solution. The next two patches introduce the sysctl configuration for tcp and udp protocols. The last patch modifies nf flow table aging mechanisms to use the configured time intervals. * How to test Control tcp/udp connection timeout using the following sysctl parameters: net.netfilter.nf_flowtable_tcp_pickup = 120 net.netfilter.nf_flowtable_tcp_timeout = 30 net.netfilter.nf_flowtable_udp_pickup = 30 net.netfilter.nf_flowtable_udp_timeout = 30 * What it could break. [Fix] The Elgato Cam Link 4K responds to the USB video probe VS_PROBE_CONTROL/VS_COMMIT_CONTROL with a malformed data structure: The second byte contains bFormatIndex (instead of being the second byte of bmHint). The first byte is always zero. The third byte is always 1. The firmware bug was reported to Elgato on 2020-12-01 and it was forwarded by the support team to the developers as feature request. There is no firmware update available since then. The latest firmware for Elgato Cam Link 4K as of 2021-03-23 has MCU 20.02.19 and FPGA 67. Therefore correct the malformed data structure for this device. The change was successfully tested with VLC, OBS, and Chromium using different pixel formats (YUYV, NV12, YU12), resolutions (3840x2160, 1920x1080), and frame rates (29.970 and 59.940 fps). [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1931843] Re: Update mlx-bootctl to access new fields in EEPROM MFG
** Tags removed: verification-needed-focal ** Tags added: verification-done-focal -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux-bluefield in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1931843 Title: Update mlx-bootctl to access new fields in EEPROM MFG Status in linux-bluefield package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in linux-bluefield source package in Focal: Fix Committed Bug description: SRU Justification: [Impact] The EEPROM MFG partition on BlueField-2 has been updated to include the VPD information for each card. In order to access these newly added fields, the mlx-bootctl driver needs to be updated to provide an access mechanism. [Fix] Add support for VPD fields in the EEPROM MFG and provide access to these via sysfs entries. The newly added sysfs entries are: sku (SKU ID), modl (Model Number), sn (Serial Number) and uuid (UUID). And the previously added opn_str sysfs has been renamed to opn. [Test Case] Though the driver provides read and write access through sysfs, the contents of the MFG partition are written during Manufacturing and then locked in order to protect the info. Writing to this partition will therefore require resetting the MFG info from the UEFI Device Manager, which will unlock the partition and allow for it to be reprogrammed. Reading the sysfs entries will print the contents of each field. It could also be empty if the field was not programmed earlier. [Regression Potential] Can be considered minimum, since the new fields have been added without interfering with the existing fields which might already be present in the EEPROM. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1936998] Re: e1000e blocks the boot process when it tried to write checksum to its NVM

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu Bionic) Status: Triaged => Fix Committed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1938537 Title: Potential reverts of 4.19.y stable changes in 18.04 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in linux source package in Bionic: Fix Committed Bug description: == SRU Justification == Impact: While reviewing patches done as part of stable work there were two changes which came from linux-4.19.y and seemed not quite right for the 4.15 kernel version we have in 18.04/Bionic: 2e1eb7b6e1e0 locking/mutex: clear MUTEX_FLAGS if wait_list is empty due to signal This change is only in 4.19y and not in 4.14.y despite it is implied that the breaking commit was already in 3.13. It also seems to pair up with a mode of mutex which only got added to 4.19. Although there were no reports yet, which could prove this wrong, it feels like we rather should not take this change without a case where the current code is reported to be wrong. 6c0065eb69de drm/amd/amdgpu: fix refcount leak The driver in 4.15 does take refcounts the same way as 4.19 does. We are missing 37ac3dc00da0 ("drm/amdgpu: Use device specific BO size & stride check.") which changed that. So we really should revert this one. Testing: These are proactive reverts, so there is no real test that could be done. However this just moves back to a state which we had before. And for that state we had no bug reports. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1938275] Re: UI becomes completely unresponsive
A very similr issue was reported in bug #1938430: a kernel oops or a complete freeze upon resuming from suspension. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1938275 Title: UI becomes completely unresponsive Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Starting from last Friday, i have had problems with Ubuntu freezing up. Although the mouse pointer still moves, clicking on things does not work. I was able to get to text mode terminal using Ctrl+Alt+Fx keys and shut down from the command line, which seemed to be unaffected. Shutting down took ages. Upon logging in again, it hung immediately as soon as the desktop loaded and i was not able to launch any applications or shut down from the UI, in fact this time i was not able to get to the text mode terminals either and had to shut down using the power button. I have since been booting from an earlier version of the kernel without issue (-147 instead of -151). This morning i tried 151 again and it immediately froze up upon logging in, before the desktop had loaded, and even the mouse pointer was frozen this time. Had to hard-reboot and booted back into -147 just fine. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1938430] Re: kernel 4.15.0-151 tends to freeze after having been suspended
This morning I still booted into 4.15.0-151 (to give it one more chance), then put the system into suspension after half an hour or so, and when I tried to wake it up a little later, the screen stayed blank -- no response to any keystroke, not to Ctrl+Alt+F1/F2/F3 either: frozen. Rebooting into 4.15.0-147 went fine, but there is no log of the freeze: just a block of some two thousand zero bytes in syslog. I have now put this 147 kernel to sleep twice, and it has woken up both times without a problem, and no suspicious message in syslog. Where can I see what the differences are between 4.15.0-147 and 151? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1938430 Title: kernel 4.15.0-151 tends to freeze after having been suspended Status in linux package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: When I tried to suspend my system today for the second time, 'systemctl suspend' was hanging -- having no effect. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1938537] [NEW] Potential reverts of 4.19.y stable changes in 18.04
Public bug reported: == SRU Justification == Impact: While reviewing patches done as part of stable work there were two changes which came from linux-4.19.y and seemed not quite right for the 4.15 kernel version we have in 18.04/Bionic: 2e1eb7b6e1e0 locking/mutex: clear MUTEX_FLAGS if wait_list is empty due to signal This change is only in 4.19y and not in 4.14.y despite it is implied that the breaking commit was already in 3.13. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Invalid ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu Bionic) Importance: Medium Status: Triaged ** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu Bionic) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu Bionic) Importance: Undecided => Medium ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu Bionic) Status: New => Triaged ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1938537 Title: Potential reverts of 4.19.y stable changes in 18.04 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in linux source package in Bionic: Triaged Bug description: == SRU Justification == Impact: While reviewing patches done as part of stable work there were two changes which came from linux-4.19.y and seemed not quite right for the 4.15 kernel version we have in 18.04/Bionic: 2e1eb7b6e1e0 locking/mutex: clear MUTEX_FLAGS if wait_list is empty due to signal This change is only in 4.19y and not in 4.14.y despite it is implied that the breaking commit was already in 3.13. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1938464] Re: Ubuntu 20.04.2 Installation fails on ThinkPad X1 Nano
I tried to install the 20.04.2.0 on ThinkPad X1 Nano, there are no crash. https://repo.huaweicloud.com/ubuntu- releases/20.04.2.0/ubuntu-20.04.2.0-desktop-amd64.iso -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1938464 Title: Ubuntu 20.04.2 Installation fails on ThinkPad X1 Nano Status in linux package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Issue: I've created Ubuntu 20.04.2 bootable USBs (tried two different sticks, and created on rufus/windows, etcher/macOS, and on Ubuntu 21.04, all following the Ubuntu bootable creation guide). With a new ThinkPad X1 Nano, I hit the "errno 5 input/output" error during installation. This error occurs after all options have been set, like username, password, partitioning options, etc., but appears to occur before the disk is actually written to. Fortunately, this means that I can boot back into my working Ubuntu 21.04 installation, as I'll go into later. Hardware Information: - ThinkPad X1 Nano - Intel Core i7-1160G7 option - 512 GB SSD option - non-touch screen option - default options otherwise - came with Windows 10 Pro 20H2 - serial number is from January 2021 Additional Notes: - validated the ISO using the checksum and guide provided - always choosing the "Erase disk and install" option since I do not wish to dual boot - same result with secure boot enabled and disabled What does work: Ubuntu 21.04 installs perfectly fine and works perfectly fine. That's with secure boot enabled as well, so I doubt that this is related to secure boot. My hunch is that the 20.04.2 kernel is too old for my X1 Nano, and perhaps there was a stealth revision to its hardware/firmware since I (anecdotally) see X1 Nano users installing 20.04.2 LTS perfectly fine. My hope is that Ubuntu 20.04.03 LTS naturally works, but I'd prefer to install an LTS version as soon as possible (such as an Ubuntu 20.04.2.X, if possible). Kernel information: The installer crashes and goes into an unrecoverable state, so I could not gather information on the bootable itself (screen freezes a little, making it difficult to send a bug report). However, I can provide the Ubuntu 21.04 information since it does work. - Ubuntu 5.11.0-25.27-generic 5.11.22 - lspci-vnvn.log (attached) Please let me know if you require additional information, and how I can help. Issue: With firefox streaming ABC News 24 (local AU news) I suspended machine. Waited Awoke machine - everything resumed as expected .. Some circling was apparent on firefox before picture resumed, however no sound. I was unable to fix it using any tools installed - to fix I `sudo apt install pavucontrol`, went to Configuration (or last tab) and Profile=Off on the drop-down menu, then returned to Profile=AnalogStereo Duplex. This is something I do on occasion for this machine on installed system or other machines I use. This is really a minor issue, & may not be an issue on an installed system (though I come across it semi-regularly & just live with it). In regular use I pause/stop sound & know this makes this almost a non- issue (almost never happens when sound isn't playing). [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1867534] Re: Intel Wireless 7260 [8086:08b2] Subsystem [8086:4262] Wifi requires interruption before timing out (and immediate reconnect attempt succeeds)
** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1867534 Title: Intel Wireless 7260 [8086:08b2] Subsystem [8086:4262] Wifi requires interruption before timing out (and immediate reconnect attempt succeeds) Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: ISO testing 20.04 Lubuntu daily (20200315). From the Live desktop, I click my nm-tray access point, supply the password. nm-tray will timeout. Trying again will timeout. What works is clicking the same access point a couple times before it times out. This causes an immediate failure and successful connection (two balloon msgs). This problem is not specific to Lubuntu. It happens with Kubuntu, Budgie, Mate, Xubuntu. The common theme is: it appears to be out of sync in some manner. The wifi connection needs to be interrupted before timing out. Then an immediate attempt (within 2-3 seconds? I haven't tested how long it can wait) succeeds. This problem also happens after install and reboot. For example, with yesterday's daily image (20200314), I had to reboot Lubuntu twice after install before the wifi worked. (I haven't reached that point yet today. I'm creating this bug report from the Live desktop. I will update with more info about post-install.). Note: I don't know if this is acceptable wifi behavior. Good enough? I figured I should report it and let someone decide. It seems to be specific to this laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad E440 20C5) or it's Intel 7260 wifi card. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1919116] Re: Intel e1000e blocks the system to enter PC10 on TGL platform
The upstream patch is here. commit d1635448f1105e549b4041aab930dbc6945fc635 (tag: platform-drivers-x86-v5.12-2) Author: David E. Box Date: Fri Mar 19 13:18:44 2021 -0700 platform/x86: intel_pmc_core: Ignore GBE LTR on Tiger Lake platforms Due to a HW limitation, the Latency Tolerance Reporting (LTR) value programmed in the Tiger Lake GBE controller is not large enough to allow the platform to enter Package C10, which in turn prevents the platform from achieving its low power target during suspend-to-idle. Ignore the GBE LTR value on Tiger Lake. LTR ignore functionality is currently performed solely by a debugfs write call. Split out the LTR code into its own function that can be called by both the debugfs writer and by this work around. Signed-off-by: David E.
