I tried to boot to linux-image-4.4.0-62-generic but I could not get past
the login screen. So I reinstalled the linux-image-4.4.0-62-generic and
run update-grub. Then I could boot to it (linux-image-4.4.0-62-generic)
and the brightness is working again. I think it is a kernel regression.

I'm having a similar issue with a Dell XPS 13 9360.
I'm running Gentoo and kernel 4.9.0.
COLD booting the laptop fixed it.
After the cold boot the following line reappeared in the lspci command:

Bugs looking similar had been referenced
I forgot to answer here, but I tested the latest kernel and the problem remains.

Sometimes when I turn off the computer it doesn't fully shut down. The

Trying a 14.04 netboot today still fails the same way.
I had to do this to allow the installation to continue:
- switch to the 2nd console (alt+f2)
- press enter to get a command prompt
- type these commands:
chroot /target
rm /initrd.img*
dpkg --configure -a # it runs the
Changing my netboot preseed configuration from "d-i pkgsel/upgrade
select full-upgrade" to "d-i pkgsel/upgrade select none" was enough to
get around this problem.
Hopefully the installation process still apply the security updates. It
seems to do it later in time so it's probably why it doesn't

I am one of the victims of the bug described above.
In fact, my neigbour is the victim: Ubuntu destroyed her Windows partition.
I was trying to help her.
That is more than a reason to turn people away from Linux.
But what is written here above is another reason.
It is perfectly incomprehensible.
It sounds as this bug was fixed in Kernel 3.8.1.

I searched but I only found an error with different symptoms but the same log
message:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1301398
As it claims that it was fixed in 3.15, I installed 3.16.0-37-generic from
Utopic and voilà: It works without problems and error
Yes, this is still an issue with 14.04 server.
I have the same problem.
Here what dmesg | tail says:

Well, an addition:
it seems to work with kernel parameter iommu=soft
Thanks for that tipp, Jaume.
