[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1529232] Re: Scanner not detected over wifi since after 3.13.0-68

2016-03-20 Thread Lucas Partridge
This seems to be fixed in the latest released kernel for ubuntu 14.04:

$ uname -rvp
3.13.0-83-generic #127-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 11 00:25:37 UTC 2016 x86_64

In both this desktop and another laptop running this kernel version,
scangearmp can now detect the MG7150 Canon scanner over wifi. I don't
know what's changed to fix this but you can now close this bug if you
wish. Thanks.

Title:
Scanner not detected over wifi since after 3.13.0-68

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Please see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2306464 for
  details. I'm running 64-bit 14.04 LTS ubuntu.

When I boot my PC into 3.13.0-68-generic (via the 'ubuntu advanced'
menu item in grub) I can detect my scanner over wifi using scangearmp.
However since 3.13.0-70-generic I have not been able to detect my
scanner over wifi. My current kernel is 3.13.0-74-generic. Therefore
I suspect a regression has occurred between 3.13.0-68-generic and
  3.13.0-70-generic:

Scanner *is* detected by scangearmp over wifi and it scans documents as
expected in this version:
  uname -a
  Linux zorro 3.13.0-68-generic #111-Ubuntu SMP Fri Nov 6 18:17:06 UTC 2015
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

But scanner is *not* detected by scangearmp in this version or later:
  Linux zorro 3.13.0-70-generic #113-Ubuntu SMP Mon Nov 16 18:34:13 UTC 2015
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Note that this happened before some time ago. i.e., The scanner was
detected over wifi, then not, then it was again some time later. Then
this latest break occurred again. I suspect successive updates are
fixing or breaking the detection accordingly.

  $ dpkg -l | grep scangear
  ii scangearmp-common 2.20-1
amd64ScanGear MP for Linux.
  ii scangearmp-mg7100series 2.20-1
amd64ScanGear MP for Linux.

Device is Canon Pixma MG7150 (combined printer, scanner, copier). Note
the printer works fine over wifi; only the scanner is affected.

I can see from the changelog at
http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/l/linux/linux_3.13.0-74.118/changelog
that many changes went into 3.13.0-69.112 but it's not obvious to me which of
these might have caused the regression.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1529232] Re: Scanner not detected over wifi since after 3.13.0-68

2016-02-02 Thread Lucas Partridge
Canon have come back with: "Unfortunately you need to wait for
scangearmp to update so that it then supports ubuntu version 14.04. We
are not yet aware of a scheduled time of release for this update, the
only thing I can recommend is that you keep an eye on the website to see
when the scangear is updated to support this."

And I notice now at the download link for scangearmp v2.20 it says under
System Requirements: Fedora 18(32bit/64bit) Ubuntu 13.04(32bit/64bit)

So, maybe when Canon update scangearmp to support 14.04 they'll take a
look at this bug...

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1529232] Re: Scanner not detected over wifi since after 3.13.0-68

2016-02-01 Thread Lucas Partridge
Hi. Sorry, I just don't have the time to locate the commit that fixes
the issue. My machine is old and slow, so even building the kernel once
would probably take ages. Frankly, it would be less effort to boot into
Windows every time I wanted to scan something!

Ideally we could get Canon interested in finding the good commit and in testing
each kernel build. I raised a support request yesterday and gave them the link
to this bug. But I haven't got much meaningful back from them so far. They
said this:
"Thank you for providing Canon with your feedback regarding this particular
issue when trying to scan with scangearmp with your Ubuntu 14.04 system.

I can confirm that the scangearmp functions normally on an Ubuntu 13.04
system, however you will have to wait for the next update.

For more information I would like to direct you to our download page.

http://www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer_products/products/fax__multifunctionals/inkjet/pixma_mg_series/pixma_mg7150.aspx?type=drivers=tcm:14-1094039=Linux%20(64-bit)=EN"

- it's not clear to me by "you will have to wait for the next update"
whether they are referring to an update of ubuntu or an update of
scangearmp. I've asked them to clarify. I'll update this bug if they
come back with any useful comments or suggestions.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1529232] Re: Scanner not detected over wifi since after 3.13.0-68

2016-01-31 Thread Lucas Partridge
Hi. I would prefer a backport to 14.04 if that's not to much trouble,
please. I have no plans to upgrade to 16.04 until at least 6 months
after it's released. Plus 14.04 is supposed to be supported for 5
years. Until this is fixed I have to boot into Windows or an older
ubuntu kernel to use the scanner, which is obviously not very
convenient.

To be honest I'm surprised no other Canon scanner users of 14.04 have
reported this issue. Maybe very few talk to the scanner over wifi.

Do you have any idea what's caused the problem? All we seem to have
established is that it's fixed in 16.04 and a recent kernel! This has
worked, broken in the past, and then worked again before breaking yet
again; so something keeps changing which breaks the wireless-detection
functionality. Even if I waited for 16.04 I'm not reassured that it
won't break again, given the chequered history of this issue.

2016-01-30 Thread Lucas Partridge
Ok, I tested xenial-desktop-i386.iso (sha1sum
d066f5a8f8502c623501857b1464713be9940c79) from today's daily build. I
put it on a USB stick and booted into it. (For my own notes: press F11
to enter boot menu on startup, then press Tab and 'live' to boot into
live ubuntu.)

I entered my wifi password then installed scangearmp from Canon's
website (scangearmp-mg-7100series-2.20-1-deb). It *was* able to find my
Canon scanner and perform a scan successfully.

  $ dpkg -l | grep scangear
  ii scangearmp-common 2.20-1
amd64ScanGear MP for Linux.
  ii scangearmp-mg7100series 2.20-1
amd64ScanGear MP for Linux.

2016-01-29 Thread Lucas Partridge
OK. The machine had since updated to 3.13.0-76-generic but still had the
problem with the scanner not being detected over wifi by scangearmp.

As per the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds#Preparing_to_install_an_upstream_kernel
I switched from the proprietary NVidia binary driver (v340.96 for
GeForce GT430) to the open source X.Org X server Nouveau driver.

I rebooted then installed the upstream kernel v4.5-rc1-wily from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.5-rc1-wily/
These were the files I used:
linux-headers-4.5.0-040500rc1_4.5.0-040500rc1.201601241731_all.deb
linux-headers-4.5.0-040500rc1-generic_4.5.0-040500rc1.201601241731_amd64.deb
linux-image-4.5.0-040500rc1-generic_4.5.0-040500rc1.201601241731_amd64.deb

I rebooted into it from the GRUB menu. scangearmp *was* then able to
find my Canon MG7150 scanner over wifi. So it's fixed in the upstream
kernel and I've added the tags you requested.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1529232] Re: Scanner not detected over wifi since after 3.13.0-68

2016-01-04 Thread Lucas Partridge
@penalvch: I've never tested an upstream kernel before so thanks for the
instructions! I'm nervous about ruining my system, so please can you
confirm my understanding is correct before I go ahead with this:

1) I've downloaded these files into their own folder:
linux-headers-4.4.0-040400rc7_4.4.0-040400rc7.201512272230_all.deb
linux-headers-4.4.0-040400rc7-generic_4.4.0-040400rc7.201512272230_amd64.deb
linux-image-4.4.0-040400rc7-generic_4.4.0-040400rc7.201512272230_amd64.deb

2) If I run 'sudo dpkg -i *.deb' in that folder in a terminal I should
get a new entry in my GRUB menu.

3) I can then attempt to boot into that kernel from GRUB at boot time
(and run scangearmp to see if it detects the scanner).

4) If the OS fails to boot for whatever reason I can simply reboot my PC
and choose my original kernel from GRUB (i.e., 3.13.0-74-generic). Is
it true that my system will be unharmed so long as I don't boot into the
upstream kernel? If you can't be 99-100% sure about this I'll have to
buy an external drive and clone my drive to it; which will take some
days...

Thanks.

scanner over wifi.

  $ dpkg -l | grep scangear
  ii scangearmp-common 2.20-1
amd64ScanGear MP for Linux.
  ii scangearmp-mg7100series 2.20-1
amd64ScanGear MP for Linux.

Device is Canon Pixma MG7150 (combined printer, scanner, copier). Note
the printer works fine over wifi; only the scanner is affected.

I can see from the changelog at
http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/l/linux/linux_3.13.0-74.118/changelog
that many changes went into 3.13.0-69.112 but it's not obvious to me which of
these might have caused the regression.

Title:
Scanner not detected over wifi since after 3.13.0-68

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

  $ dpkg -l | grep scangear
  ii scangearmp-common 2.20-1
amd64ScanGear MP for Linux.
  ii scangearmp-mg7100series 2.20-1
amd64ScanGear MP for Linux.

  Confirmed

  $ dpkg -l | grep scangear
  ii scangearmp-common 2.20-1
amd64ScanGear MP for Linux.
  ii scangearmp-mg7100series 2.20-1
amd64ScanGear MP for Linux.

Device is Canon Pixma MG7150 (combined printer, scanner, copier). Note
the printer works fine over wifi; only the scanner is affected.

I can see from the changelog at
http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/l/linux/linux_3.13.0-74.118/changelog
that many changes went into 3.13.0-69.112 but it's not obvious to me which of
these might have caused the regression.

  $ dpkg -l | grep scangear
  ii scangearmp-common 2.20-1
amd64ScanGear MP for Linux.
  ii scangearmp-mg7100series 2.20-1
amd64ScanGear MP for Linux.

Device is Canon Pixma MG7150 (combined printer, scanner, copier). Note
the printer works fine over wifi; only the scanner is affected.

I can see from the changelog at
http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/l/linux/linux_3.13.0-74.118/changelog
that many changes went into 3.13.0-69.112 but it's not obvious to me which of
these might have caused the regression.

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1529232] Missing required logs.

2015-12-26 Thread Lucas Partridge
Hi Brad,

Which kernel do you want me to be booted into when I run apport-collect?
The last version before the break (3.13.0-68); the first version available
after the break (3.13.0-70); or the current version (3.13.0-74)? Or
doesn't it matter at this point?

Thanks, Lucas.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1529232] [NEW] Scanner not detected over wifi since after 3.13.0-68

2015-12-25 Thread Lucas Partridge
Public bug reported:

Please see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2306464 for details.
I'm running 64-bit 14.04 LTS ubuntu.

When I boot my PC into 3.13.0-68-generic (via the 'ubuntu advanced' menu
item in grub) I can detect my scanner over wifi using scangearmp.
However since 3.13.0-70-generic I have not been able to detect my
scanner over wifi. My current kernel is 3.13.0-74-generic. Therefore I
suspect a regression has occurred between 3.13.0-68-generic and
3.13.0-70-generic:

$ dpkg -l | grep scangear
ii scangearmp-common 2.20-1
  amd64ScanGear MP for Linux.
ii scangearmp-mg7100series 2.20-1
  amd64ScanGear MP for Linux.

Device is Canon Pixma MG7150 (combined printer, scanner, copier). Note
the printer works fine over wifi; only the scanner is affected.

I can see from the changelog at
http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/l/linux/linux_3.13.0-74.118/changelog
that many changes went into 3.13.0-69.112 but it's not obvious to me
which of these might have caused the regression.

  $ dpkg -l | grep scangear
  ii scangearmp-common 2.20-1
amd64ScanGear MP for Linux.
  ii scangearmp-mg7100series 2.20-1
amd64ScanGear MP for Linux.

Device is Canon Pixma MG7150 (combined printer, scanner, copier). Note
the printer works fine over wifi; only the scanner is affected.

I can see from the changelog at

http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/l/linux/linux_3.13.0-74.118/changelog
that many changes went into 3.13.0-69.112 but it's not obvious to me
which of these might have caused the regression.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1286552] Re: No wifi after suspend

2014-06-08 Thread Lucas Partridge
Finally found a fix that worked for me: http://askubuntu.com/a/368836

Also, at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2218043, there was the
following extra line in wakenet.sh:
pkill -f wpa_supplicant
...but I found I didn't need that. (But I'm posting that here in case someone
else will need it.)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1286552] Re: No wifi after suspend

2014-05-24 Thread Lucas Partridge
Does anyone know if Canonical or ubuntu developers will be trying to fix
this or a duplicate of it, please?

None of the suggested fixes apply or have worked for me on 14.04. I
won't be upgrading my other computer from 12.04 until this issue is
fixed. (When I tried that computer on the 14.04 Live CD it also wouldn't
reconnect to wifi after waking from suspend.) Rebooting the computer
doesn't always even work for me, and not suspending it at all isn't very
energy-saving. It pains me to say I find myself using Windows more these
days as a result...

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1286552] Re: No wifi after suspend

2014-04-25 Thread Lucas Partridge
I seem to be in a similar position to Nicolas. Before a suspend, with
wifi working, WWAN is disabled according to 'nmcli nm'. Then, after
suspending, with wifi not working, WWAN is enabled.

However, sometimes wifi doesn't work even after restarting my Dell
laptop and WWAN is disabled after restarting regardless of whether or
not wifi is working. So the WWAN enabled/disabled may be a red herring.

I've also noticed link=yes in the 'configuration' entry for the wireless
adapter section of 'sudo lshw -C network' when wifi is working but
link=no when wifi does not work. But maybe the link attribute is just
another way of indicating whether it's working or not (i.e., an effect
rather than a cause). I don't know what the 'link' value means.

Wifi used to reconnect for me without any problems on my Dell in 12.04
LTS. It's only since upgrading to 14.04 I've had these problems
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2218612). Interestingly, wifi
fails to reconnect after suspending if I'm running off the 14.04 Live CD
too. Presumably wifi would reconnect successfully after suspending if I
was running off a 12.04 Live CD but I haven't tried that. Maybe if we
ran these or other commands before and after suspending on 12.04 and
14.04 Live CDs we could isolate what's changed.

  No wifi after suspend

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
After suspending ubuntu the wifi doesn't work. The solution given here
  (http://askubuntu.com/questions/368671/ubuntu-13-10-wifi-not-re-
connecting-after-suspend) worked for me but when I have updated my
Ubuntu now it won't work. I have tried to test mainline kernel but it
  won't to boot with it.

To reproduce the bug : just suspend the computer and then power it.
There's no wifi network until you restart the computer.
