However I don't actually see the config option set anymore (and not even
a comment saying it's not set) looking at the current version in saucy:
I tried the todays daily * and it seems OK, with one thing (which I experienced
before too):
when after installation the reboot is done, the shutdown scripts is waiting for
a press of ENTER key, but the text saying so is not visible (see screenshot).
So it hangs there until I press ENTER.

If it helps any, I had this problem when I tried to boot the saucy image from
Aug 18. It dropped me to a busybox shell or when I selected check this CD for
errors the machine would reboot after a few seconds.
However, I now tested it again using the image from Aug 30 and it boots fine.

3.8.0-30-generic that I got this morning has fixed this - I now longer
have to pass 0 to /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness on
boot/resume to adjust the brightness.

I can confirm this error. It looks like there is some iterator running, and
when snd_config_search_definition runs, it changes the config tree, because
there is some hook that does this.
So the iterator's pointing to already freed memory.
The iterator is probably the one in the add_card
Sometimes a hook manipulates the config tree, which makes currently
running iterators point to freed memory. As a workaround, make two
copies, one for the iterators and another for the hooks.

I'm on Ubuntu 13.04 and I just got something similar happening to what
the original submitter reported.
The system took 2 minutes to boot (as opposed to 10 seconds usually) and
the mouse and keyboard didn't respond when the greeter appeared. I
unplugged and replugged the mouse and keyboard, and
I found a solution for that problem.

FWIW, I agree with UserError that it is bloat, but as Luke points out, we
should probably fix this in Debian rather than to introduce a delta.
I'm not sure if 200k bloat even counts as a bug, so setting to Wishlist
priority.

It's most definitely a kernel bug. Also, I looked at both 1294729,
1293828 and 1286866 and all of them refer to the ICE1712 driver.
