Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1751512] Re: Kernel 4.13.0-32 goes dark after boot with two monitors

2018-03-03 Thread Alan Bland
Some follow up information.

That installation process went pretty badly.  It took at least three
tries before I had a working system, running with the 4.13.36 kernel.

The video system seems to be the weak link as far as this computer is
concerned.  This morning I booted up and went to breakfast.  When I came
back the primary screen was but I could see the cursor on the second
screen.
After I punched the escape key the primary came on but the lower half
was acting wacky.  The icons that resided on that part of the screen
were pushed up and over the icons above them.  If I moved the icon down
it jumped back up when I let is go.  The menu opened up in the middle of
the screen.  It was as if the driver thought the lower left corner of
the screen was in the middle left of the display. The background looked
normal.

All for now.  I might have time to try the kernel that is in development
next weekend.

Kernel 4.13.0-32 goes dark after boot with two monitors

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
I did a new install today of Mint 18.3 on my laptop. Dell latitude E6410
Installed without connecting to the internet.
After install finished I booted a few times before connecting an external
monitor. It still booted ok.
Then I ran the software update and got a bunch of level 1 and level 2
updates. No problems.
There were four level 3 updates
  systemd 229-4ubuntu21.1
  linix-firmware 1.157.16
  linux-libc-dev 4.4.0-116.140
  linuxkernel 4.13.0-36.40-16.041

I installed them one at a time and restarted the laptop after each one.
After the kernel update the laptop would boot and show the square mint icon
for a brief time them the screen goes dark. Once I disconected the external
monitor the laptop rebooted correctly.

I tested the external montior with VGA and HDMI to DVI cable. The
same response. I reverted to the 4.10.0-38 kernel that came with the
installer ISO. Am back up and running.

There is a problem with the new kernel.

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1751518] Re: video blanks after boot with dual monitors

2018-03-01 Thread Alan Bland
I made a fresh install.  The problem is gone.

There were some other weird behaviors.  So I made a fresh install.
Which worked.  It continues to work after updating the kernel.

I don't know what was wrong with the previous installation.  The
computer seems to be working well now.

Thanks for the reply.

I will look into testing the 4.16 kernel, but my time is limited.  It
won't be soon.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1751512] Re: Kernel 4.13.0-32 goes dark after boot with two monitors

2018-02-26 Thread Alan Bland
There were some other problems with the install. Gvim would not work.
It turned into a terminal rather than an editor. I decided to do a
clean install. The third time. The first time it installed with two
montors attached and the network was connected. That is when I first
saw the video go blank at startup.

The second time it installed with a single monitor and without the
network and no third party software. It booted and ran with two
monitors. Then I updated the level 1, 2 and 3 updates. Then the level
4 updates saving the kernel for last. After that the video would blank
with two monitors until I switched back to the 4.10 kernel.

After a third clean install the 4.13.0-36 kernel is booting up with two
monitors and they are staying lit.
Gvim is working like is should. Something in the install went wrong or when I
installed the updates one at a time i did so in the wrong order.

It is up a running I will continue configuring it.

Please close this bug report.

Bug description:
I installed fresh from Mint 18.3 ISO today on my latitude E6410. After the

linix-firmware 1.157.16; linux-libc-dev 4.4.0-116.140, and linuxkernel
4.13.0-36.40-16.04.1.
I installed them separately and rebooted after each one. After the kernel

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1751518] Re: video blanks after boot with dual monitors

2018-02-25 Thread Alan Bland
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected sylvia

** Description changed:

I installed fresh from Mint 18.3 ISO today on my latitude E6410. After the
no network install I set up a second monitor. Then I applied a bunch of level
1 and 2 updates. There were four level 3 updates: systemd 229-4ubuntu21.1,
linix-firmware 1.157.16; linux-libc-dev 4.4.0-116.140, and linuxkernel
4.13.0-36.40-16.04.1.
I installed them separately and rebooted after each one. After the kernel
update the system booted up and briefly showed the sqaure mint logo then both
screens went dark.

I ran ubuntu-bug linux it reports the ** Problem in linux-
  image-4.13.0-36-generic

  The problem cannot be reported:

This is not an official Linux package. Please remove any third party

  Ubuntu 4.13.0-36.40~16.04.1-generic 4.13.13
  alan@alan-Latitude-E6410 ~ $

I am booting now with the 4.10 version kernel that came with the iso.

Title:
Kernel 4.13.0-32 goes dark after boot with two monitors

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I did a new install today of Mint 18.3 on my laptop. Dell latitude E6410
Installed without connecting to the internet.
After install finished I booted a few times before connecting an external
monitor. It still booted ok.
Then I ran the software update and got a bunch of level 1 and level 2
updates. No problems.
There were four level 3 updates
  systemd 229-4ubuntu21.1
  linix-firmware 1.157.16
  linux-libc-dev 4.4.0-116.140
  linuxkernel 4.13.0-36.40-16.041

I installed them one at a time and restarted the laptop after each one.
After the kernel update the laptop would boot and show the square mint icon
for a brief time them the screen goes dark. Once I disconected the external
monitor the laptop rebooted correctly.

I tested the external montior with VGA and HDMI to DVI cable. The
same response. I reverted to the 4.10.0-38 kernel that came with the
installer ISO. Am back up and running.

There is a problem with the new kernel.

video blanks after boot with dual monitors

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I installed fresh from Mint 18.3 ISO today on my latitude E6410. After the
no network install I set up a second monitor. Then I applied a bunch of level
1 and 2 updates. There were four level 3 updates: systemd 229-4ubuntu21.1,
linix-firmware 1.157.16; linux-libc-dev 4.4.0-116.140, and linuxkernel
4.13.0-36.40-16.04.1.
I installed them separately and rebooted after each one. After the kernel
update the system booted up and briefly showed the sqaure mint logo then both
screens went dark.

I ran ubuntu-bug linux it reports the ** Problem in linux-

I installed fresh from Mint 18.3 ISO today on my latitude E6410. After the
no network install I set up a second monitor. Then I applied a bunch of level
1 and 2 updates. There were four level 3 updates: systemd 229-4ubuntu21.1,
linix-firmware 1.157.16; linux-libc-dev 4.4.0-116.140, and linuxkernel
4.13.0-36.40-16.04.1.
I installed them separately and rebooted after each one. After the kernel
update the system booted up and briefly showed the sqaure mint logo then both
screens went dark.

I ran ubuntu-bug linux it reports the ** Problem in linux-
  image-4.13.0-36-generic

  The problem cannot be reported:

This is not an official Linux package. Please remove any third party
  package and try again.

  cat /proc/version_signature
  Ubuntu 4.13.0-36.40~16.04.1-generic 4.13.13
  alan@alan-Latitude-E6410 ~ $

I am booting now with the 4.10 version kernel that came with the iso.

Title:
Kernel 4.13.0-32 goes dark after boot with two monitors

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I did a new install today of Mint 18.3 on my laptop. Dell latitude E6410
Installed without connecting to the internet.
After install finished I booted a few times before connecting an external
monitor. It still booted ok.
Then I ran the software update and got a bunch of level 1 and level 2
updates. No problems.
There were four level 3 updates
  systemd 229-4ubuntu21.1
  linix-firmware 1.157.16
  linux-libc-dev 4.4.0-116.140
  linuxkernel 4.13.0-36.40-16.041

I installed them one at a time and restarted the laptop after each one.
After the kernel update the laptop would boot and show the square mint icon
for a brief time them the screen goes dark. Once I disconected the external
monitor the laptop rebooted correctly.

I tested the external montior with VGA and HDMI to DVI cable. The
same response. I reverted to the 4.10.0-38 kernel that came with the
installer ISO. Am back up and running.

There is a problem with the new kernel.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1751518] [NEW] video blanks after boot with dual monitors

2018-02-24 Thread Alan Bland
Public bug reported:

I installed fresh from Mint 18.3 ISO today on my latitude E6410. After the no
network install I set up a second monitor. Then I applied a bunch of level 1
and 2 updates. There were four level 3 updates: systemd 229-4ubuntu21.1,
linix-firmware 1.157.16; linux-libc-dev 4.4.0-116.140, and linuxkernel
4.13.0-36.40-16.04.1.
I installed them separately and rebooted after each one. After the kernel
update the system booted up and briefly showed the sqaure mint logo then both
screens went dark.

I ran ubuntu-bug linux it reports the ** Problem in linux-
image-4.13.0-36-generic
