[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1852077] Re: Backport: bonding: fix state transition issue in link monitoring

2020-01-09 Thread Aleksei
I can see that fixes were released, from changelog here:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+changelog

Should statuses be updated on this page? Or it's not fully fixed?

Bug description:
  == Justification ==
From the well explained commit message:

Since de77ecd4ef02 ("bonding: improve link-status update in
mii-monitoring"), the bonding driver has utilized two separate variables
to indicate the next link state a particular slave should transition to.
Each is used to communicate to a different portion of the link state
change commit logic; one to the bond_miimon_commit function itself, and
another to the state transition logic.

Unfortunately, the two variables can become unsynchronized,
resulting in incorrect link state transitions within bonding. This can
cause slaves to become stuck in an incorrect link state until a
  subsequent carrier state transition.

The issue occurs when a special case in bond_slave_netdev_event
sets slave->link directly to BOND_LINK_FAIL. On the next pass through
bond_miimon_inspect after the slave goes carrier up, the BOND_LINK_FAIL
case will set the proposed next state (link_new_state) to BOND_LINK_UP,
but the new_link to BOND_LINK_DOWN. The setting of the final link state
from new_link comes after that from link_new_state, and so the slave
will end up incorrectly in _DOWN state.

Resolve this by combining the two variables into one.

  == Fixes ==
  * 1899bb32 (bonding: fix state transition issue in link monitoring)

This patch can be cherry-picked into E/F

For older releases like B/D, it will needs to be backported as they are
missing the slave_err() printk marco added in 5237ff79 (bonding: add
slave_foo printk macros) as well as the commit to replace netdev_err()
with slave_err() in e2a7420d (bonding/main: convert to using slave
  printk macros)

For Xenial, the commit that causes this issue, de77ecd4, does not
  exist.

  == Test ==
Test kernels can be found here:
  https://people.canonical.com/~phlin/kernel/lp-1852077-bonding/

The X-hwe and Disco kernel were tested by the bug reporter, Aleksei,
the patched kernel works as expected.

  == Regression Potential ==
  Low.
This patch just unify the variable used in link state change commit
logic to prevent the occurrence of an incorrect state. And the changes
are limited to the bonding driver itself.

(Although the include/net/bonding.h will be used in other drivers, but
the changes to that file is only affecting this bond_main.c driver)

  == Original Bug Report ==
There's an issue with bonding driver in the current ubuntu kernels.
Sometimes one link stuck in a weird state.
It was fixed with patch https://www.spinics.net/lists/netdev/msg609506.html
in upstream.
  Commit 1899bb325149e481de31a4f32b59ea6f24e176ea.

We see this bug with linux 4.15 (ubuntu xenial, hwe kernel), but it
should be reproducible with other current kernel versions.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1836176] Re: Touchscreen stops working after S3 suspend on Lenovo X1 Yoga 3th

2019-12-28 Thread Aleksei Gusev
I'm not sure if it's important or not, but even if touch screen stops
working you can close the lid, wait for the laptop to sleep and then
click power button to wake it up. Then when you open the lid the touch
screen works.

  == Impact ==

An upstream change in v4.11 made xfrm loose memory (8 pages per ipsec
connection). This was fixed in v5.4 by:
commit 86c6739eda7d "xfrm: Fix memleak on xfrm state destroy"

  == Fix ==

Pick the upstream fix into all affected series.

  == Testcase ==

  see below

  == Risk of Regression ==

Low, the change adds a single memory release case in one driver. The
  effect can be verified.

  ---

Ubuntu linux distro, 4.15.0-62 kernel, server platform.
This OS is used as an IPSec VPN gateway. It serves up to several hundred
concurrent connections

In an attempt to upgrade from the 4.4 kernel to 4.15, the team noticed
that VPN gateway VMs were running out of physical memory after 12-48
  hours, depending on load.

Attachments from a server machine in this state in attached leakinfo.txt
  output of free -t
output of /proc/meminfo in out of memory condition
  output of /slabtop -o -sc
/sys/kernel/debug/page_owner sorted and aggregated after server ran for 12
hrs and ran out of memory
  Patches for 4.15 and 5.4

Highlight from page_owner, we can see the leak is a buffer associated
with the ipsec impelementation. Each connection leaks 32k of memory

  Commit 1899bb325149e481de31a4f32b59ea6f24e176ea.

We see this bug with linux 4.15 (ubuntu xenial, hwe kernel), but it
should be reproducible with other current kernel versions.

  Hi all,

behavior. It results in latency spikes of generic_make_request() function call.
  How to reproduce:

    2. While fio is writing to the device, change nr_requests setting to the
same value as current:
    echo 256 > /sys/block/sdt/queue/nr_requests
or: if scheduler is already none:
    echo none > /sys/block/sdt/queue/scheduler
    3. Stop fio and check slat log:

There're a few patches to fix this behavior:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/axboe/linux-block.git/commit/?h=for-5.1/block=e5fa81408fb43ebabde65938ef8b20ae879017e7

This behavior affects production systems, because every change uevent
triggers udev to change settings prior to udev rules. Some software,
for example arcconf (tool for managing adaptec HBA adapters) triggers
uevents for every block device. So, every call to arcconf utility
  results in latency spike.

Could this be backported to 4.15 kernel for xenial/bionic?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1791427] Re: Touchpad and/or trackpoint stop working after S3 suspend on Lenovo X1 Carbon 6th

2019-03-15 Thread Aleksei Gusev
FYI, I've compiled the kernel using the instructions (thank you so much
for them!) and it seems my laptop survived a night and touchpad works. I
have Thinkpad X1 Yoga 3rd generation. It's mostly X1C6 as far as I know.

Title:
Touchpad and/or trackpoint stop working after S3 suspend on Lenovo X1
  Carbon 6th

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 18.04.1

Terminology in case we use different terms:
touchpad - just the rectangular touch-sensitive surface below the keyboard
(xinput lists it as Synaptics TM3288-011)
trackpoint - the red thingy built into the keyboard + 3 physical buttons
below the keyboard (trackpoint and buttons are integrated together; listed in
xinput as TPPS/2 Elan TrackPoint)

On September 7th, 2018, Lenovo has issued a BIOS update (v1.30), which
enables proper S3 deep sleep state - users no longer have to patch
DSDT tables to get it. It can be enabled in the BIOS settings. In X1
carbon 6th generation models that have NFC, when laptop wakes from
suspend by opening the lid, in most cases both touchpad and trackpoint
stop working completely. They are also no longer listed when running
xinput command. Sometimes just one of them stops working, usually the
trackpoint. In some rare cases it is possible to bring them back by
  using these commands:

  echo -n none > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/drvctl
  echo -n reconnect > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/drvctl
  rmmod psmouse
  modprobe psmouse

These worked properly when waking up from S2Idle sleep state (had
these in a script that runs after waking the machine from suspend),
but with S3 deep sleep these rarely work and the only way to bring
back touchpad and/or trackpoint is turning off the machine and turning
it on (restart does not help).

I could not find any pattern that would show when the input devices
stop working or start working again using the commands mentioned
above. It's completely random from my perspective.

This is happening on the standard issue 4.15.0-33-generic kernel that
shipped with my Ubuntu 18.04 (with updates), as well as with newer
mainline kernels, such as the newest point versions of 4.17, 4.18 and
  4.19 RC2.

This happens regardless of whether "blacklist i2c_i801" is commented
out in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf or not. It happens regardless of
whether "psmouse.synaptics_intertouch=1" is passed as grub parameter.
Presence of TLP does not make it better, nor worse.

It appears that non-NFC models are not affected. I know at least one
Arch Linux user who has the exact same model, but without this issue.
I'm using synaptics driver (no libinput installed), he uses libinput
and doesn't have synaptics, if that information is of any use.
Libinput does not seem to help.

This forum thread also has more details from users who updated their
BIOS to get S3 suspend: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-
  Discussion/X1-Carbon-Gen-6-cannot-enter-deep-sleep-S3-state-aka-
  Suspend-to/td-p/3998182/page/27

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1815733] Re: unnecessary request_queue freeze

I've tested this kernel - there's no latency spike when setting none
scheduler while it's already none - nice.

Waiting for e5fa81408fb43ebabde65938ef8b20ae879017e7 backport:)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1815733] Re: unnecessary request_queue freeze

2019-02-21 Thread Aleksei
Hi, thank you!
0002-block-avoid-setting-none-scheduler-if-it-s-already-n.patch - looks good.

0001-block-avoid-setting-wbt_lat_usec-to-current-value.patch - I didn't mention
this one:) it is not needed for 4.15, because blk_mq_freeze_queue() in
queue_wb_lat_store() was added only at 4.19 due to
c125311d96b1bfcce0f5930a4f0fdfe39ea14f7c
I think, we can skip it for 4.15.

So, i'm asking to backport this one -

    4094, 16, 1, 4096
    4111, 17, 1, 4096
    ...

There're a few patches to fix this behavior:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/axboe/linux-block.git/commit/?h=for-5.1/block=e5fa81408fb43ebabde65938ef8b20ae879017e7

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/axboe/linux-block.git/commit/?h=for-5.1/block=fbd72127c975dc8e532ecc73d52f3b1b00935bec

  New
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The Goodix GF3208 is not being recognised by the system (Dell Inspiron
15 7577). What's worse is that it isn't even showing the manufacturer
  vendor id information when doing:

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0bda:5652 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Note that the vendor id 27c6 should at least say "Shenzhen Huiding
  Technology Co., Ltd." as per

Will/has support been made for the Goodix GF3208 Fingerprint

  Thanks in advance,

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1626283] Re: lenovo t420s very slow wifi after dist upgrade 14-16

2018-01-01 Thread Aleksei
sorry - The config above is not working as well. I mean - it is unstable - it
may give 35 MBit/s
or 0.5 MBit/s. No relation with '11n_disable' setting found. I tried several
kernels - 4.4.10 - but haven't been able to find stable working one - so the
question is still open

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1626283] Re: lenovo t420s very slow wifi after dist upgrade 14-16

2018-01-01 Thread Aleksei
As I managed to solve the problem before and after updates I started
using latest kernel where the problem reveals again, I put my working
config here

First - this one - sudo vim /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi-disable11n.conf
having this one inside - options iwlwifi 11n_disable=0
is not affecting the wi-fi speed

Secondly, I've installed 3.19 kernel - and it works for me

GRUB config

1. Using grub-customizer, I've put 3.19 entry on top of menu list, to have it
being run with just one 'enter' key

2. I've put here - sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
the following - GRUB_DEFAULT="Ubuntu, with Linux 3.19.0-66-generic"

the speed is good - about 36 MBit/second for upload/download both

Hope it will help someone

Note, that the latest (4.4.23 kernel) have buggy slow wi-fi driver(0.5,
2 MBit/second)

now it is about 23 mbit\s, but actually my wifi signal is about 100
mbit\s and my IPAD gets about 80 \ 100 (download\upload). I consider
that fix as good but there is a room for an improvement
