[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1620733] Re: Xubuntu 16.04 on HP Compaq nx6325 freezes on Suspend

2016-09-16 Thread rewound
kernel-fixed-upstream should read kernel-semi-fixed-upstream as suspend
fails every second attempt

Below is the observed behaviour and how it could be implemented using an
'object' that could be a flag set in a file on persistent media such as
a hard disk

1a Whiskermenu Shutdown to switch PC off
1b Briefly press in power switch say for 2 secs to switch PC on
1c Object is set to 0 (capturing fact PC has just come out of completely
powered down state)
1d Wait about 3 minutes
1e Observe PC works normally

2a Via whiskermenu select Suspend
2b If Object is set to 1 don't suspend (ignored)
2c Object is set to 1 (capturing fact suspend has been used once)
2d Green power LEDs (on power switch and on front of case) blink together every
3 seconds approximately.
2e No other LEDs are on
2f Observe PC behaves as if suspended

3a Briefly press in power switch say for 2 secs to resume from suspend
3b Alternative place to set Object to 1
3c Observe PC resumes normally

4a Via whiskermenu select Suspend
4b If Object is set to 1 don't suspend (actioned)
4c Observe PC hangs with power switch LED on and front power LED both green and
constant
4d also yellow LED on mute speaker key is on
4e Brief presses on power button and Ctrl Alt Del etc have no affect
4f Only option left is press and hold Power button for about 6 secs to switch
PC off

On same HP laptop Compaq nx6325 but with Ubuntu 14.04 (trusty) Kernel
3.13.0-44-generic
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1416348
Suspend only works once, fails second time. Reported on 2015-01-30
Not yet adopted suggestion was to update the BIOS

mvacSSD:~$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
68TT2 Ver. F.06 12/21/2006 (The BIOS we are currently testing with)

http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=1849084=8=1093
Three F.07 files are listed by HP (BIOS proposed to try)

  Ubuntu 16.04: Suspend freezes the system after upgrade to linux image
  4.4.0-16

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  I'm using ubuntu 16.04 on a XPS 15 9550.

  Suspend/resume worked flawlessly with linux image 4.4.0-15, and after
  standard upgrade yesterday (5/04/2016) which installed image 4.4.0-16,
  the system freezes when attempting a suspend. I get no response from
  the system (nor keyboard, nor screen, nor touchpad), but it gets very
  hot, so that it must be running something.

  Booting with 4.4.0-15 makes the suspend to work perfectly.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1620733] Re: Xubuntu 16.04 on HP Compaq nx6325 freezes on Suspend

2016-09-08 Thread rewound
Last post should end Nevertheless KERNEL=4.8.0-040800rc5-generic is now
running, so next we test suspend... (A solution to Bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/launchpad/+bug/119420 would be grand)

Following the last post we have upstream success; so far after suspend
is selected from Whiskermenu the laptop closes down with the green LED
on the power button blinking every few seconds.

On Power button press the machine restarts quickly with so far no bad
side effects noticed.

Setup is...

2016-09-08 06:36:09
cat /etc/lsb-release

Bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1620741 is
related and its post #11 has some comments on kernel
4.8.0-040800rc5-generic running on an HP Compaq nx6325 laptop.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1620741] Re: Xubuntu 16.04 on HP Compaq nx6325 hangs on Shutdown

2016-09-08 Thread rewound
Following the last post we have upstream success; tested FIVE
consecutive times after Shutdown was selected from Whiskermenu the
laptop closed down power.

Setup is...
2016-09-08 06:36:09
cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=16.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=xenial
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS"

KERNEL=4.8.0-040800rc5-generic GNU/Linux < < <

ls /usr/bin/*session
/usr/bin/dbus-run-session /usr/bin/xfce4-session

grep CMDLINE /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="forcepae"

Comments so far...
1) Each time to restart on pressing the power button, so green light is on the
button, a black screen shows with no noticeable activity.. Need to turn off
power button and on again before the familiar HP INVENT F9 F10 splash screen
shows and startup commences.
2) "Failed to start USB modeswitch_1.6" has a red cross on startup. The scroll
up is fast so the message might not be copied here exactly.
3) After starting one or more "System program problem detected" pop ups show
with only choices of Cancel or Report. We select Report each time. A "Show
detail" button on this pop-up or to say where the problem is logged would be
useful. Anybody got ideas on how to find out detail of the problem(s).
4) We are not sure if more than one "System program problem detected" pop up is
present as others could be hidden underneath and clicking on Report does not
immediately show any reaction. Maybe the low latency 4.8 kernel would be more
reactive. Other machines running Xubuntu 16.04 are more responsive.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1620741] Re: Xubuntu 16.04 on HP Compaq nx6325 hangs on Shutdown

2016-09-07 Thread rewound
Simplifying /etc/default/grub
/etc/default$ grep CMDLINE grub*
OLD:
grub.rpA: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi=noirq debug=y"
grub.rpA: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="forcepae"
(grub.rpA is as reported initially)

NEW:
grub: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="debug=y"
grub: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="forcepae"

16.04 shutdown now hangs ending with...
etc etc
systemd-shutdown[1]: All filesystems unmounted
systemd-shutdown[1]: Deactivating swaps.
systemd-shutdown[1]: All swaps deactivated.
systemd-shutdown[1]: Detaching loop devices.
systemd-shutdown[1]: All loop devices detached.
systemd-shutdown[1]: Detaching DM devices.
systemd-shutdown[1]: All DM devices detached.
systemd-shutdown[1]: Powering off.
tg3 :02:01.0 enp2s1: Link is up at 100 Mbps, full duplex
tg3 :02:01.0 enp2s1: Flow control is on for TX and on for RX
(ie. no IPv6 line)

Once the stage "all filesystems (are) unmounted", including USB drives,
is reached all data is safe and surely the signal to the hardware to
poweroff (ie switch of the electricity) should be sent. Otherwise what
is the meaning of "Powering off."

Does anyone know what comes after..
tg3 :02:01.0 enp2s1: Flow control is on for TX and on for RX
IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): enp2s1: link becomes ready

How close have we come to turning off the volts?

Regarding "Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?"
Xubuntu 14.04 and prior versions shutdown okay.
The highest numbered kernel that shutdown correctly was that updated by 14.04
on about 10th August 2016 when it was decided to upgrade (downgrade?) to
Xubuntu 16.04

On 25Feb2016 we know Xubuntu 14.04.4 LTS KERNEL=3.13.0-77-generic
GNU/Linux shutdown ok

What is new/changed between the shutdown flow charts of 14.04 LTS to
16.04 LTS?

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1586748] Re: Lubuntu 16.04 does not install on a non-pae processor

2016-08-09 Thread rewound
/mvac21dellCompaqNx6325FanDust.jpg
Freezing may have a hardware cause; for example a laptop that ran okay
for a while but did freeze was found to have a fan that was totally
clogged up with compressed dust. After cleaning it runs Xubuntu 14.04
for months (with overnight hibernation) with no stability issues.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1586748] Re: Lubuntu 16.04 does not install on a non-pae processor

2016-08-09 Thread rewound
Regarding "lubuntu freezes now sometimes and is not of the most stable one"
This is most likely nothing to do with the bug title concerning "a non-pae
processor".
Freezing may have a hardware cause; for example a laptop that ran okay for a
while but did freeze was found to have a fan that was totally clogged up with
compressed dust. After cleaning it runs Xubuntu 14.04 for months (with
overnight hibernation) with no stability issues.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1586748] Re: Lubuntu 16.04 does not install on a non-pae processor

2016-08-08 Thread rewound
We used Unetbootin to write a Xubuntu 16.04 .ISO file to a 16 GB USB
memstick to make a live system. When we start the live system the error
appears...

“WARNING: PAE disabled. Use parameter ‘forcepae’ to enable at your own
risk! (...) This kernel requires the following features not present on
the CPU: pae.”

Almost all solutions suggest selecting Advanced Options or F6 on the menu but
we found neither menu option shown; instead our boot menu screen shows...
* Default
* Help
* Try Xubuntu without installing
* Install Xubuntu
* Check disc for defects
* Test memory
* Boot from first hard disk

Sysinfo tells us we have a Pentium(R) M processor (as in the Bug
description) so is suitable to use forcepae as other solutions say.

Although not listed in our boot menu we found we could cheat and press
F6 then Tab to get a command line that could be appended to. However we
would prefer a menu system that worked especially if the 'live memstick'
is to be used more than once.

A solution is to mount the 'live memstick' into a working Xubuntu system and
edit it, for example...
sudo mousepad extlinux.conf
For every line starting "append initrd=" append " forcepae -- forcepae"

An example for menu option "Try Xubuntu without installing":
BEFORE: append initrd=/casper/initrd.lz file=/cdrom/preseed/xubuntu.seed
boot=casper quiet splash --- persistent
AFTER: append initrd=/casper/initrd.lz file=/cdrom/preseed/xubuntu.seed
boot=casper quiet splash --- persistent forcepae -- forcepae

Booting from the edited live USB memstick showed the PAE error replaced
by an advisory that the PAE test is being bypassed and normal menu
operation takes place.

Asides:
* The result of choosing Default in the above boot menu is not described
however we can see the 'command line' this option is associated with in
extlinux.conf and note it does not re-appear in any of the other options
presented.
* The command line that appears under 'the cheat' above has an unknown action.
* Although our command line included "--- persistent" and a file of expected
size named casper-rw is generated we have yet to see signs that this Unetbootin
feature is working.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1416348] Re: Suspend only works once, fails second time

2015-02-05 Thread rewound
penalvch: We discovered in Bug #1175504, also relating to HP Compaq nx6325, you
kindly suggested to Tobiasz As a potential WORKAROUND, are you able to
hibernate following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PowerManagement/Hibernate
?
Following your link we had success with hibernate using...
sudo -s
echo shutdown  /sys/power/disk
echo disk  /sys/power/state
although we had no joy encapsulating this into a script to be called from a
desktop icon.

Also from
http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2014/04/enable-hibernate-ubuntu-14-04/
sudo pm-hibernate
This has worked several times in succession and takes about 60 seconds to
resume with zero battery drain whilst hibernated, so is ideal; better for us
than suspend. Although the author goes on to give a method to 'Enable Hibernate
in System Tray Menu' it was easier just to put the sudo pm-hibernate directly
into a desktop launcher or script.

Regarding BIOS upgrade http://www.mwiacek.com/www/?q=node/103 says that the
change from BIOS F06 to F07 was to 'provide support for AMD processors' and
this Compaq nx6325 does contain a 'Mobile AMD Sempron(tm) Processor'.
The HP BIOS link you gave
http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=1849084swLangOid=8swEnvOid=2104
 allows download of e.g. sp35894.exe that is a DOS/Windows executable! Maybe
the method by Richlv
http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-Systems-and-Software/BIOS-upgrade-with-Linux/td-p/296487
 will work.

As the laptop and Xubuntu is now working perfectly I would rather not upgrade
the BIOS, with the inherent risk of upgrade, at this point although I realise
it might help discover the problem with suspend.
We may attempt a BIOS upgrade some day when the laptop is not so depended on.

Having got hibernation working a few times I realise I only tried for
suspend as the hibernation option in Ubuntu 14.04 was missing. It is a
pity this cannot be re-enabled simply by clicking a setup box. Hopefully
in future upgrades the missing hibernate can be default enabled as
before.

Title:
  Suspend only works once, fails second time

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: pm-utils

  had this problem now since 10.10 64 bit, and I was hoping it would go
  away in Natty 64 bit, but it didn't.

  In short: Suspend only works once, the second attempt at a suspend
  results in the monitor going blank as it was entering suspend, but the
  computer still running, as evidenced by the hard drive and fans still
  running. The computer can then not be awaken anymore, only a hard
  reset and subsequent reboot returns the PC to working state.

  When I check for errors after the first suspend, I see the following errors
in the log:
  Code:

  [ 8461.100062] ahci :05:00.0: failed to stop engine (-5)
  [ 8461.600062] ahci :05:00.0: failed to stop engine (-5)
  [ 8463.170076] ata9: failed to resume link (SControl )
  [ 8463.170109] ata10: failed to resume link (SControl )
  [ 8467.510109] ata9: failed to resume link (SControl )
  [ 8467.510163] ata10: failed to resume link (SControl )

  So it seems to me that it has something to do with AHCI. I searched
  for this error in the forum, but I could not find anything. I also
  tried various suggestions, such as using uswsusp and the hibernate
  scripts, and including ahci in the suspend module lust. But each of
  the result in the exact same behavior: First suspend works fine,
  second suspend fails and reset is necessary.

  My Hardware configuration:
  - AMD Phenom II 965
