Ok I got this sorted out and turns out it was my fault. A few weeks ago,
when I was struggling to boot Ubuntu at all, I blacklisted
intel_lpss_pci. It turned out that a BIOS update fixed the boot issue
but I completely forgot about the blacklisted module... No idea why
things worked later on and th

The 5.3 version seems to have everything working, thanks! The only thing
I notice now is that each time I plug it into my thunderbolt monitor I
have to reauthorize the peripherals. Maybe that's expected?

I forgot to add something potentially important - this used to work
until a few days ago. I don't know which update exactly broke things,

I can confirm this bug on my machine. The 5.4-rc7 kernel not only does
not solve the issue, but additionally breaks wifi.
