I have installed 3.12.0-999-generic and so far I haven't had any kernel
panics, but it is an intermittent problem, so I am reluctant to say that
the problem is resolved in the mainline yet. Also, although there have
not yet been any kernel panics, the USB UVC

Actually, the backlight was just off by default. There's also a bit of
lag when changing brightness in Ubuntu that wasn't there before the
firmware upgrade, and the EFI menu is garbled when booting a live image,

latest saucy daily image (October 1 2013). Blank screen during
installation, nothing proposed in this thread or over the internet can

I should add that trying the Ubuntu saucy kernel on an existing
installtion of 13.04 , also exhibits the problem and makes the system
unbootable. So it will also affect people who are going to upgrade from
13.04.

failed to build
removing 'quiet nosplash' from the live image boot params showed some
text up until 'loading initrd', then a quick scroll of unreadable text
before the screen went blank, and ctrl+alt+f* didn't work to switch
VTs/away from blank.

tried to see whether removing reference to nvidia device driver in
xorg.conf would help... doesn't. 13.04 now boots into a blank screen in
which nothing moves.
so am now about to try to install kubuntu 13.04 on a spare hard drive
and recover user stuff from the now unusable boot

I will install the rc3 of 3.12 to see if the problem goes away. It seems to
be intermittent so it might be hard to tell if it goes away right away or
not. I will be in and out of meetings all week with this laptop so it
should get lots of suspend/resume testing.

I've attempted to follow the correct format and have submitted a bug report to
the kernel sound maintainer. Also, I've changed the the tag to include
'kernel-bug-reported-upstream'. Hope I did everything correctly as I've never
submitted an upstream bug report before.
