Yes, when the new sony_hid first came out there were two devices an analog
sticks/triggers and buttons device and a second accelerometer/gyro device.
Splitting into two joysticks
It seems that we're hitting this issue again with the subiquity
installer. The installer fails at the "installing kernel" stage, when
zipl is called. These are the last lines of the installer log
(retrieving the full log is not trivial because of LP: #1823797):

Sorry, trying to follow your instructions, but some competency problems

The HP Elitebook 840 G1 is a regular laptop, so the accelerometer is not
