First, I uninstalled Virtualbox.
Proprietary Nvidia drivers were never installed on my computer, there is
the "nouveau.modeset=0" parameter into Grub.
Then, I have installed :
linux-image-4.17.0-041700rc1-generic_4.17.0-041700rc1.201804152230_amd64.deb

That procedure also broke 2 things into my Xubuntu 17.10 :
- Ethernet connexion not working any-more
- The Linux kernel version "n-1" is now tagged into the "auto-removable"
category, that would leave me with only one kernel version installed (I
have uninstalled the 4.17 RC1 version).

On a freshish reboot (42 minutes) with some of the qemu VMs started

Alright the test kernel clearly fixed the issue.
My gut tells me that there might be some memory leak also at play with

This is a production machine (main file server) so it is not possible

If I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL after the error and then hit enter it boots.
Waiting for the 30sec timeout also works.

I went and edited /boot/grub/grub.cfg directly to change the timeout in
case something else in the process of updating GRUB the correct way with
update-grub was a factor.
