Vadim, I have successfully upgraded to 13.10. I am still booting with 3.8.0-29-generic even on Saucy. I have dell xps 13 too and the latest kernel where brightness works is 3.8.0-29. I've just upgraded to kernel 3.11.0.12.13 on Dell XPS 13 and the display brightness is broken again (0%). This is on Saucy 13.10. I've just upgraded to kernel 3.11.0.12.13 on Dell XPS 13 and the display brightness is broken again (0%). Tested with 3.8.0-32 kernel from raring-proposed on a Toshiba laptop displaying the same problem. @Bib & @autra Thanks for your thoughts - it's good to keep things in perspective. My point is more that rapid adoption of Ubuntu would be achieved faster if these recurring 'bugs' with flagship hardware could be sorted out. That said, I'm a fairly happy Ubuntu user, and have been using it since 8.10. Not much chance of that changing anytime soon, but would be good for this recurring bug to get sorted. @dinky : officially, dell only support 12.04 LTS at the moment. Stick with it if you want a better experience and don't want to live dangerously ;-) Windows also have a bunch of bugs, you need to acknowledge that, but you don't know about them because it is not open. With ubuntu (more generally, linux), I have these little hardware minor issues, but I frequently have a uptime of more than 15 days. I never achieve that with windows. Using Linux need an adaptation. You leave a rather policed world to step into the world of Freedom. You won't regret it, I tell you, but this needs a bit of adaptation I guess. Note that there is a workaround to this. Hi Dinki (curious-mitchell) I think the point is that this laptop IS supplied AND certified for Ubuntu single boot and as so is supplied in BIOS (they say Legacy) mode. The LCD back-light issue appeared as a regression for the ones who stayed in BIOS mode, but also appeared for those who switched to UEFI in the aim of double boot with win8. I can't say which ones was the first to meet the problem. **Maybe** using an elder Win compatible with BIOS **could** be a workaround. For me, I bought this l322x certified with Ubuntu because I was fed up with old laptops still having various issues with some piece of hardware in Linux, and at the same time I decided to forgive Windows. Although I am quite newby in Linux and forgiving Windows is another issue for me, I ***decided*** this is my price for the price. Whatever I must admit that even once this huge step is walked, small issues remain in my l322x, such as hibernation/thaw hanging sometimes, always-on blue-tooth on reboot, a small keyboard back-light miss-behaviour and a touch-pad that I can't set as I want, but maybe this is because I decided to jump into Raring (for which I knew the laptop **was not certified** although it was claimed that all sputnik stuff was embedded) at the same time I reinstalled the OS to remove the bunch of MS-DOS partitions upon which the supplied 12.04 was supplied (now a single / and swap are enough, and even this last is for hibernation only). To end in an honest remark, I never had real issues while installing Services Pack onto either clients and servers machines from WinNT4 to Win7, and I must admit that the rhythm and depth of changes in Ubuntu remains frightening to me. I don't understand why this is such an ongoing problem - isn't the XPS 13 ultrabook supposed to be the developer laptop? I thought the whole point was to provide a seamless experience for developers - and others - who want a Ubuntu ultrabook that's fully supported and 'just works'. What's going on here? I've stayed with the 3.8.0-27 kernel for the past few updates, because it's working. Why are updates being pushed out that break the brightness functionality to begin with? Can confirm that XPS13 booting UEFI is broken by the update to 3.8.0-30; brightness is not adjustable again. alex, you know that by switching to EFI you did nothing? you are suppose to not only switch mode to UEFI, but ALSO install OS in UEFI mode for brightness to work on .29 kernel. Unfortunately, it seems like the fix for Brightness control in BIOS mode broke the brightness in UEFI mode. I changed to EFI without reinstalling before, that didn't fix it. After updating to the newest kernel it works now. same problems as Andrea, brightness control is broken (very low, fixed, controls don't work) with the last kernel 3.8.0-30.44. Hi Daniel. Had to do a reinstall; hadn't left any space on the drive for an EFI partition. I installed the Ubuntu 13.04 x64 release, which came with the 3.8.0-19 kernel. This had a strange result, which was that the screen was fixed to minimum (backlight off) brightness, and wouldn't change. Doing a software update to 3.8.0-27 fixed the issue, and resulted in the normal operation which I was expecting. My previous installation, which booted in legacy bios, had also been updated to 3.8.0-27. LoL, My brightness works as intended. I am on Ubuntu 13.04 64bit Kernel 3.8.0-27-generic It didn't work when I installed Ubuntu in BIOS mode (since XPS 13 ships with Motherboard that is UEFI), when I switched to UEFI mode and reinstalled my OS, brightness issue was fixed. Still an issue on 3.8.0-27 64-bit.
frank-g-hansen's script works around the issue well. For some reason,
my case selection has to read:
case "${1}" in
true|resume|thaw)
... in order to resume brightness control after sleep.

Hi,
how about a workaround? I cannot write a script at all, but from Google
searches on how to do stuff I created my own workaround:
1) For working brightness buttons after startup and a startup brightness
of 50 % I added the following to the file /etc/rc.local (before the exit
0):
bash -c "echo 0 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness"
bash -c "echo 50 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness"
2) For working brightness buttons after a suspend I added a file named
20_Enable_Brightness_setting_keys
to the directory /etc/pm/sleep.d
The file contains:
case "${1}" in
resume|thaw)
bash -c "echo 0 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness"
;;
esac
I guess this is crude and full of possible errors/problems, but it works
for me for the time being. This way the brightness after a resume is at
the level it was before standby and the brightness keys on the XPS13
work.
