I've found workaround, it was enough to disable n standard with "options
iwlwifi 11n_disable=1". Now I'm able to authenticate with any hotspot.

2020-06-11 Thread florin
@Maciej - I am glad at least one works and I can use the device,
although it is not reliable like this, it should work. I want to help
with debugging as much as possible, but I am not sure what to do as
since I had the bug, I updated the kernel serveral times + I changed to
the latest release so I am not sure if the steps above should be the
same for getting some good logs.

Any updates on this one? I'm have the same issue with Intel Wifi 6 AX200

over and over. 2.4GHz works fine on other devices.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1848953] Re: Intel wifi 3165 [8086:3165] subsystem id [8086:4010] not working properly in Ubuntu 19.10

2020-05-05 Thread florin
I have updates, after some more use. For some reason, I can now connect
to the 5GHz network, don't know why, didn't do anything myself.

I have updated to Ubuntu 20.04, but both 19.04 and the latest release
work the same.

The problem is that I cannot connect to the 2.4 GHz now. So, once it was
able to connect to one of them, it cannot connect to the other. The
phone can do it without problems, so it is not a router problem for
sure. I will also do the commands above, but have lots of meetings and
cannot focus right now.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1848953] Re: Intel wifi 3165 [8086:3165] subsystem id [8086:4010] not working properly in Ubuntu 19.10

2020-04-05 Thread You-Sheng Yang
@florin,

1. from your screenshot in comment #28, that's not a big deal. backport-
iwlwifi-dkms can help on outdated machines but you don't need it.
However, since you don't have it installed, and yet the system still
have iwlwifi module available from linux-modules-extra package, `ubuntu-
drivers` mistakenly thinks you have that driver installed manually,
which is a minor issue for `ubuntu-drivers`. It's fine.

2. So let's see what does wapsupplicant/nm say:

  * Please remove that 5G network from your saved networks. Or better, empty
that.
  * enable wapsupplicant debug messages as you have done,
  * enable NetworkManager debug messages at boot by adding a logging section:

[logging]

domains=ALL:info,WIFI:debug,WIFI_SCAN:debug,PLATFORM:debug,SUPPLICANT:debug,DEVICE:debug

  * Reboot. Try to connect to your 2.4G network and then attach the
outout of `journalctl -b > syslog.txt` (which would contain all your
syslog of current boot, so you might what to have a check if there is
any credential info before uploading).

x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Restarted system and tried to join both wifi frequencies; only 5 GHz works.
dmesg for kernel 5.4 log attached. I will be back with kernel 5.6.

I also just installed and tried the latest mainline kernel, v5.6
(https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.6/):

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

With kernel v5.6 no wifi connection works.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1848953] Re: Intel wifi 3165 [8086:3165] subsystem id [8086:4010] not working properly in Ubuntu 19.10

2020-04-04 Thread florin
@You-Sheng Yang (vicamo)

I have done the next:
1. Added the -d parameter:
sudo gedit /lib/systemd/system/wpa_supplicant.service
ExecStart=/sbin/wpa_supplicant -d -u -s -O /run/wpa_supplicant

2. sudo nmcli general logging level debug domain all

Is there something else I can do for debugging this? I am even willign to allow
someone to my computer via Teamviewer, if this could help.

I have to tell that the Wifi works, but not completely, I am on the 5GHz
connection. In the harware list it shows as in the screenshot.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1848953] Re: Intel wifi 3165 [8086:3165] subsystem id [8086:4010] not working properly in Ubuntu 19.10

2020-04-04 Thread You-Sheng Yang
@florin, I personally bought one AC 3165 chip online with the same PCI
ID [8086:3165] subsystem id [8086:4010], and it works (for both 2.4G and
5G network) just fine with kernel 5.3.0-18-generic you're using as well
as latest 5.3.0-45-generic, linux-firmware 1.183.5. Besides, it looks
pretty normal in the Additional Drivers. DKMS driver found (but you
don't need it on 5.0+ kernels).

Maybe we need to dump your wpasupplicant and NetworkManager logs? For
wpa_supplicant, you can modify
/lib/systemd/system/wpa_supplicant.service and add '-d' or '-dd' for
debug logs:

  ExecStart=/sbin/wpa_supplicant -d ...

For NetworkManager, you can execute:

  sudo nmcli general logging level debug domain all

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1848953] Re: Intel wifi 3165 [8086:3165] subsystem id [8086:4010] not working properly in Ubuntu 19.10

2020-01-01 Thread florin
@You-Sheng Yang (vicamo) - I have tried, it still cannot connect to the
2.4 GHz. I cannot see any visible difference, in additional drivers list
the card is grayed. If you need to run commands for debugging, I am
willing to help, just post sufficient detailed posts so I can run the
commands.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1848953] Re: Intel wifi 3165 [8086:3165] subsystem id [8086:4010] not working properly in Ubuntu 19.10

2019-12-30 Thread You-Sheng Yang
@florin, backup /lib/firmware folder, and clone aforementioned git repo
into the same place. Power off completely for a minute or so and reboot.
Detailed commands:

  $ cd /lib
  $ sudo mv firmware firmware.dpkg
  $ sudo git clone
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git
firmware

When you finished testing, move the folders back:

  $ cd /lib
  $ sudo mv firmware firmware.git
  $ sudo mv firmware.dpkg firmware

2019-12-30 Thread florin
Sorry for the question, but I am not sure how to do that. I see folders
with drivers and files over there, how should I do it? Copy the content
of some of them (I would guess Intel and what else?) in some folder?
Thanks!

2019-12-18 Thread florin
@Kai-Heng Feng
I get nothing on that command ("dkms status"). I did lots of the things above,
including installing kernels, dkms, removing dkms, etc. They might have been
contradictory, but either way, in my case, nothing happened, the driver was
always grayed and cound not connect to the 2.4GHz (5 GHz works even with the
card grayed in that list of proprietary drivers).

Do you have any DKMS installed? Please run `dkms status` to check
installed DKMS.

@Serghei and @John Brown - I am curious, in your proprietary drivers
list (Additional Drivers), do you have the Intel card active and
enabled? In my laptop, Intel 3165 is grayed and bellow it, it says The
device is not working; the checkbox is on Do not use this device.

Also was not able to connect to any 2.4 or 5Ghz network with Intel

restarted and now able to connect to both 2.4 and 5Ghz networks. Running
5.3.0-23-generic #25-Ubuntu SMP

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1848953] Re: Intel wifi 3165 [8086:3165] subsystem id [8086:4010] not working properly in Ubuntu 19.10

2019-12-10 Thread Sergey Pavlov
Hi,
I have similar issue with AC3165 on Lenovo 720S. To be more precise I can't
connect to 2.4Ghz network on new TP-Link router but able to connect to 5Ghz
network. Insteresting that the issue doesn't not appear with older access point
which provides only 2.4Ghz network using the same WiFi basic settings (802.11n
mode, 20Mhz channel bandwith, AES encryption).

*BUT* what does solve the issue in my case is reloading of iwlwifi module after
boot. I.e. doing
# modprobe -r iwlwifi
# modprobe iwlwifi
fixes 2.4Ghz connection issue with TP-Link

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1848953] Re: Intel wifi 3165 [8086:3165] subsystem id [8086:4010] not working properly in Ubuntu 19.10

2019-11-04 Thread florin
Hi there! I returned home and did the following:

1. Removed dkms driver
sudo apt purge backport-iwlwifi-dkms

2. Installed the latest RC mainline kernel
ls -al
total 70352
drwxr-xr-x 2 florin florin 4096 nov  4 23:37 .
drwxr-xr-x 5 florin florin 4096 nov  4 23:48 ..

-rw-r--r-- 1 florin florin  8766748 nov  4 23:37

-rw-r--r-- 1 florin florin 51181032 nov  4 23:37
linux-modules-5.4.0-050400rc6-generic_5.4.0-050400rc6.201911031940_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

3. Restarted
4. Tested the kernel and tried to connect the 2.4 GHz network.
uname -a
Linux florin-SATELLITE-P50-C 5.4.0-050400rc6-generic #201911031940 SMP Mon Nov
4 00:43:05 UTC 2019 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

5. Cannot connect 2.4, then it connects automatically to the 5 GHz.
Cheked, in the additional drivers list it looks like a not functional wifi
card, just like before. In Ubuntu 19.04 it worked, BTW, something changed
meanwhile.

6. /var/log/dmesg is attached.

Hi Marco,

Please file a new bug for a different model. With that, and some more
details about what exactly fixed your problem, then we may be able to land
the right fix into mainline/generic kernel, so that you don't bother redo
those fixes again.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1848953] Re: Intel wifi 3165 [8086:3165] subsystem id [8086:4010] not working properly in Ubuntu 19.10

2019-10-29 Thread You-Sheng Yang
florin, please remove the dkms package before installing mainline
kernel:

  $ sudo apt purge backport-iwlwifi-dkms

They shouldn't be conflicting to each other, but when DKMS is installed,
the in-tree modules won't be used.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1848953] Re: Intel wifi 3165 [8086:3165] subsystem id [8086:4010] not working properly in Ubuntu 19.10

2019-10-29 Thread florin
I am making a large back-up in the next few hours so cannot restart
system, but will do it tonight if I am done by then.

Does the order of the above things to do matter (dkms+driver first try,
latest kernel second try)?

Thank you.

Title:
  Intel wifi 3165 [8086:3165] subsystem id [8086:4010] not working
  properly in Ubuntu 19.10

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I have a clean install of the latest Ubuntu, 19.10, but since the live usb, a
bug appeared.
  I could not login to the 2.4 GHz Wifi network at home with the fresh
installed Ubuntu, it says the password is wrong, but it is not.

  I have Dual Band Intel AC 3165 it seems. My card appears in the
  Additional Drivers list with the notice that the device is not
  working. I can connect the 5 GHz wifi, but not the 2.4 GHz. See the
  attached screenshot.
