We are currently using KOHA 3.22 - planning to upgrade to the next stable
version.
Could anybody clarify what is a principle difference between KOHA 16.05, 17.11,
18.05 ?

The numbers indicate the release date: 16.05 was released in May 2016,
17.11 was released in November 2017 and 18.05 is due for release next month.
Koha 3.22 was the last release before this pattern was adopted. You
could think of it as being 15.11 :)

I'm guessing this is possible using something like Koha's support for open
standards such as Z39.50 or OAI-PMH.
I attempted the advanced search and looked to all libraries. The system
responded that no records were found.
I have ubuntu xenial and koha 17.11.04. I added a new library to the database
and added some books to that library. When I did a search for the text I could
not find them as a superuser.
I suspect your Zebra rebuild has not run, possibly because you have the
wrong permissions. This page might help:
