*CHINESE PRESIDENT, JIANG ZEMIN, VISITS VARADERO RESORT

Havana, April 14 (RHC)--Chinese president, Jiang Zemin, on an official
three-day visit to Cuba, visited the island's most important resort on
Saturday. After holding talks in Havana with Cuban president Fidel Castro,
the Chinese leader took a day to visit the island's famous Varadero Beach
Resort.

On Friday the two countries signed various accords, in tourism and other
economic spheres, as well as in sports, education and culture. The Asian
nation will also extend the island a 200 million dollar line of credit for
the expansion and modernization of Cuba's telecommunications system.

On Saturday the Chinese president and his high-level delegation are focusing
on Cuba's fast-growing tourism industry, the country's number-one hard
currency earner. China, through Cuba's National Bank, will extend the island
a 24 million dollar credit preference for the construction of a new hotel on
Havana's seaside drive.

Also on Friday, President Jiang and Cuban president Castro reviewed
international regional affairs and bilateral relations, defining Cuba-China
relations as " an excellent moment"

The Chinese president concludes his visit to Cuba on Sunday when he will
travel to Venezuela, the last leg of a Latin American tour.

*CUBANS TO CONVENE FOR ANNIVERSARY RALLY ON MONDAY

Havana, April 14 (RHC)--In what is expected to be one of the largest rallies
ever, hundreds of thousands will gather on Monday in Havana to commemorate
the 40th anniversary of the proclamation of the socialist character of the
Cuban Revolution. The commemoration will be held on the same spot: the
corner of 23rd and 12th streets, in downtown Havana, where president Fidel
Castro made the pronouncement 40 years ago.

At 5pm local time, Cubans will recall when they bid farewell to the victims
of the April 15th bombings, the prelude to the Bay of Pigs invasion. The
meeting will also serve to reaffirm Cuba's revolutionary principles and is
meant to be a demonstration that socialism continues to be in force, in
today's world.

*CUBANS GATHER IN RANCHUELO TO PROTEST HOSTILE US ACTIVITIES

Havana, April 14 (RHC)--More than 30,000 Cubans gathered on Saturday in the
municipality of Ranchuelo in central Villa Clara province, just a few hours
before commemorating the 40th anniversary of the proclamation of the
socialist character of the Cuban Revolution, and the Bay of Pigs victory.

Residents from Ranchuelo and neighboring areas filled the Milagros Jimenez
Garcia Sports Complex, where they called for the elimination of the U.S's.
Cuban Adjustment Act, the Helms-Burton and Torricelli Laws, and Washington's
economic blockade against Cuba. Participants in the Open Tribunal also
demanded justice in the case of Luis Posada Carriles and the other
terrorists detained in Panama.

The huge gathering also denounced maneuvers by the U.S. government and its
allies in an attempt to condemn Cuba in the UN Human Rights Commission in
Geneva, Switzerland.

The Open tribunal was presided over by Defense Minister, Raul Castro, by
commanders of the Revolution, Juan Almeida, Ramiro Valdes and Guillermo
Garcia, and local and provincial leaders.

*CUBA'S FOREIGN MINISTRY CONDEMNS ISRAELI ACTIONS IN OCCUPIED TERRITORIES

Havana, April 14 (RHC)--Cuba's Foreign Ministry has issued an offical note
expressing concern over Israeli operations in the Palestinian occupied
territories.

The message, published in Saturday's edition of the Cuban newspaper, Granma,
says the operation -- unprecented in recent years -- consisted of Israeli
Army troops using armoured cars, bulldozers and other equipment in an
invasion of the Khan Ynes Palestinian refugee camp in the Gaza Strip,
destroying some 50 homes. Two Palestinians died in the attack and
approximately 50 were wounded.

The Cuban Foreign Ministry charges that the unusual operation into areas
which since l994 have been under the control of the Palestine National
Authority, reveal the Ariel Sharon govenment's complete lack of willingness
to proceed with the so-called "peace process" between the Arabs and the
Israelis.

The official note goes on to state that violence in the region is escalating
with the use of heavy artillery, missiles and grenades with a corresponding
increase in the numbers of dead and wounded, for the most part Palestinian
civilians.

Just two weeks ago, states the foreign ministry message, the United States
vetoed a resolution in the U.N. Security Council presented by the Non
Aligned Nations Movement, which called for a U.N. observation force to be
sent to the occupied Palestinian territories to attempt to halt the violence
against the Palestinian population. Once again, says the note, the United
States came to the defense of the criminal policy being implemented by its
ally Israel.

The Cuban Foreign Ministry message published on Saturday in Granma points
out that as the Israeli army was attacking the Khan Yunes Palestinian
refugee camp, the name of Israel came up in Geneva among the countries
co-sponsering the move masterminded by the United States in the U.N. Human
Rights Commission to condemn Cuba for supposed human rights violations in
its country.

How is it possible, asks the note, that the Israeli government can concern
itself with the human rights situation in another country when it treats the
Palestinian population as being without rights of any kind exploiting and
torturing and killing them?

The Cuban Foreign Ministry expresses its strongest condemnation of the
aggressive actions of the Israeli army and government against the
Palestinian people and demands an immediate end to the violence. The Cuban
government goes on to call for international action to end the violence
against Palestinians in the occupied territories, that steps be taken to
ensure compliance with Security Council resolutions, that all lands occupied
by Israel be returned, and that an independent Palestinian state be created
with its capital in East Jeruselem.

*LAOTIAN SPORTS LEADER GRATFIED BY HIS VISIT TO CUBA

Havana, April 14 (AIN)--Phouthong Seng Akhom, president of Laos' National
Sports and Olympic Committee, has described his three-day visit to Cuba as
"fruitful."

Before his departure, the Laotian sports leader told the local press at
Havana's Jose Marti International Airport that he was pleased with the
agreement he signed with the president of the Cuban Sports Institute,
Humberto Rodriguez. He noted that he was also gratified that the island will
receive Laotian students, who will study at Havana's International School
for Physical Education and Sports.

The agreement establishes that the two parties will work to encourage,
promote and strengthen technical cooperation and sports exchanges, in order
to achieve a higher level of development in the sports movement of each
country. The agreements are also aimed at increasing and strengthening
relations between sports institutions, and will promote the exchange of
athletes, sports trainers and experts, and teams to participate in bilateral
competitions in Cuba and Laos. The agreement will be in force for five
years, at the end of which time it will be automatically extended for
another five-year term.

Phouthbong Seng Ahom, who participated in the National Children's Gymnastics
Festival held in the Cuban capital's Sports City, said he was impressed with
the performance of young Cuban athletes. The Laotian sports official added
that, during his stay on the island, he learned much about the development
of education, health care and tourism in Cuba.

Alarcon, with Jose Ramon Balaguer, member of the Cuban Communist Party's
Political Bureau, with the Minister of Public Health, Carlos Dotres, and

*CROWN PRINCE ALBERT OF MONACO ENDS VISIT TO CUBA

Havana April 14 (RHC)--Crown Prince Albert of Monaco has ended his visit to
Cuba. On Thursday, he spoke with Cuban president Fidel Castro, whom he
characterized as "a truly exceptional person".

International Conference on Physical Education and High Performance, also

*CHINA REJECTS WASHINGTON'S ACCOUNT OF U.S. SPY PLANE INCIDENT

Beijing, April 14 (RHC)--China has charged that the United States is
attempting to evade responsibity in the incident caused by one of its spy
planes. On Saturday Chinese government spokesman Sun Yuxi, said that
Washington should assume an attitude of cooperation to help resolve the
problem.

The Chinese official's statements came after the U.S. government made public
a video taken before the incident which it claims shows that China is at
fault for the crash between the Chinese F-8 fighter jet and a U.S.
four-engine EP-3E, used by the Navy for electronic eavesdropping.

The Chinese pilot went down with his plane in the collison that occured on
April 1. The search to find the pilot, WAng Wei, was officially ended today.
According to spokesman Sun Yuxi, the video images shown in the United States
after the release of the 24 crew members signify nothing. He stressed that
rather than trying to make excuses the United States should cooperate, and
said the two sides will discuss the incident during negotiations on
Wednesday.

Meanwhile in Havana, another Chinese government spokesman accompanying
president Jiang Zemin on his 4-day visit to Cuba said that China will not
return the spy plane until investigations into the incident are concluded.

On Thursday, citing humanitarian reasons, China authorized the release of
the 21 men and 3 women U.S. crew members, but stressed that the incident is
not over. The Chinese government contends that China is the victim, since a
Chinese pilot was killed and a Chinese plane lost, to say nothing of the
violation of its sovereignty when the airplane entered its air space and
landed in Chinese territory without authorization.
