US CONSIDERS OIL PIPELINE IN SERBIA
===================================

BELGRADE, April 21, 2001 (B92)

The US is considering building a regional oil
pipeline through Serbia, the Serbian Energy Ministry
announced yesterday. The oil pipeline will connect the
Romanian port of Constanca with one of the Italian
ports.

According to preliminary project plans, the pipeline
would go through Hungary and then connect onto the
Adriatic pipeline on Slovenian territory. However, US
senior regional commercial officer Patrick Hughes met
with Energy Ministry officials yesterday to pitch
the idea of building the pipeline through Serbia.

"We spoke about the energy co-operation between
the two countries and Hughes introduced the idea of
building an oil pipeline in Serbia," deputy energy
minister Dimitrije Vukcevic told B92.

"If the US companies decide upon the route going
through Serbia, we would have the opportunity to earn
from transporting the oil, and our refineries would
import raw materials at much better terms," Vukcevic
said.

Vukcevic added that Yugoslav companies might
participate in building the part of the pipeline in
Yugoslav territory. According to some estimates, it
would cost approximately 1 million US dollars to
build each kilometer of this pipeline.
