VNA Late President Ton's relic site restored The restoration of the relic site of late President Ton Duc Thang has just been completed in Trung Yen commune, Son Duong district, Tuyen Quang province. His living and working places and the safety trench have been reinforced with concrete and the surrounding is decorated with green tea fence, ensuring a simple design of the old relic site. A memorial house which displays about 70 pictures and artefacts relating to the days President Ton Duc Thang working and living in Tuyen Quang, has also just been completed. **** Activities welcome Party congress Localities are organising many cultural activities to welcome the Ninth Party Congress. In Thai Binh northern province, a photograph exhibition on activities of the Communist Party of Vietnam throughout its congresses is being held. This includes an artistic photographs exhibition displaying the works of photographers from Thai Binh and other neighbouring areas. Cultural activities are also being held in various districts in the province with songs and dances praising the Party, Uncle Ho, and the country. Many localities in the province are organising traditional sporting activities. Thua Thien - Hue province organised a mobile exhibition of paintings and photographs in many localities to showcase the leading role of the Communist Party of Vietnam in leading the people to the new millennium. The exhibition includes 130 paintings, black and white and colour photographs introducing the developments of the Party, especially during doi moi (renovation). The Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union of the province is organising a book donation campaign to give to children living in remote and disadvantaged areas. **** Vietnam, Cuba boost economic tiesVietnamese Finance Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung and Cuban Finance and Prices Minister Manuel Millares Rodriguez held a working session in Hanoi on April 16. The two ministers informed each other about the socio-economic situation in their respective countries and exchanged management experience in finance and taxation. Minister Hung reiterated the success of the Communist Party of Vietnam's renovation policy and said he hoped that the friendship and economic, financial, commercial and investment co-operation between Vietnam and Cuba would further develop in accordance with potential of the two countries. During his working visit to Vietnam, the Cuban Finance and Prices Ministry delegation will inquire into Vietnam's tax system, tax management, experience in operating State auditing work, the relations between auditing activities and State inspection activities, and experience in developing a market-oriented economy. (VNA) **** Culture ministry delegation visits DPRKA delegation of the Ministry of Culture and Information led by Deputy Minister Vo Hong Quang attended the 19th April Spring Art Festival in Pyongyang, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) from April 10-14. The festival was held on the occasion of the 89th birthday of late President Kim Il Sung (April 15). During the DPRK visit, Deputy Minister Quang informed the host about the Vietnamese government's decision to grant 5,000 tonnes of rice to the DPRK people to help them solve their current difficulties. A hand-over ceremony of the donation was held in Pyongyang on April 12. On behalf of the DPRK government, the vice president of the DPRK's Committee for Preventing and Overcoming Natural Calamities received the aid. He said he highly valued the goodwill of the Vietnamese government and people. (VNA) **** Vietnam donates Mongolia 2,000 tonnes of rice Vietnam has donated in token 2,000 tonnes of rice to Mongolia to help the country mitigate the consequences of natural calamity. The donation hand over ceremony was held in Hanoi yesterday by the Finance Ministry and the National Reserve Department. Attending the ceremony were the Mongolian ambassador to Vietnam and representatives from the Finance Ministry, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Reserve Department. **** Seven hours to save child from danger Capturing the intruder. Intruder in the house Mrs Loan, Mr Huan¹s wife, said in panic that she found a intruder had broken into her house at 4 am, April 15. At that time, all the doors, including the front and back doors on the first floor and another upstairs, were still locked. There was no sign of a break in. The thief knew that he had no way to escape. He rushed into12 years old boy Thang's room on the second floor while the child was sleeping. He wrapped a child in a blanket, holding a knife in his hand, and said to Mr Huan and his wife: "Give me VND 10 million or I¹ll kill him." The couple were very frightened and climbed into their neighbour¹s house to call the police. Also according to Mrs Loan, it was possible that the intruder broke into her house at dusk on April 14, when the house owners were negligent, and waited for the opportunity to start his burglary. At about half past four, the police surrounded the house and saw that the intruder took Thang to the bathroom and bolted the door. Thang cried loudly. The intruder forced Thang to tell the police to withdraw and that only Mr Huan may come near to carry out his demands; he asked for money four times (first time: VND 150,000; second time: VND 200,000; third time: 450,000 and fourth time: VND 1 million); he asked Mr Huan to give him a shirt, a helmet, a taxi (for escape) and two litres of petrol. According to Mr Nguyen Van Vinh, head of the Me Linh district¹s police, all the intruder's demands were met except that of two litres of petrol. At about 11am, the intruder still kept Thang. Deputy director of the provincial police Phung Tien Bo and district¹s chairman Nguyen Van Chuc asked the Ministry of Public Security to take harsher measures to save Thang. At 11:20, the order was made for the special force and the district's police to attack After two shots of tear gas into the bathroom, the special force broke into the bathroom and caught the burglar. After only over one minute of action, little Thang was saved. The police took the burglar away, winning the admiration of hundreds of people. Having been saved, Thang was taken to the Me Linh district's health centre. Thang regained consciousness after fifteen minutes. Mr Vinh, head of the district police station, said the intruder is Dinh Van Huan, born in 1982 in Phuc Thang, Me Linh. Huan has criminal records involving stealing properties of people. When Thang had been saved, hundreds of people sighed of relief and gave great applause to policemen.
