AFP. 16 January 2002. United States helped derail Colombia peace talks,
guerrilla says.

HAVANA -- The United States helped derail Colombia's peace talks last
week, a FARC representative said Wednesday.

"One of the principal forces behind the collapse of the peace
negotiations between the government and the FARC is the United States,"
Hernan Ramirez, a guerrilla representative, told the Cuban news agency
Prensa Latina.

In an effort to regain control of its "backyard" in the Americas, the
CIA has taken control of the Colombian armed forces, Ramirez told Prensa
Latina.

Ramirez also said that the United States would add to the 1.3 billion
dollars it has already committed to beefing up the Colombia military.
