>Today, the political prisoners of Turkey have already passed the 45th day of
>their Death Fast resistance, which was started at October 20, 2000. We call
>upon all of those who are concerned about the rights of political prisoners
>to show support at this critical time. Across Europe the supporters of the
>Death Fast resistance are now entering the 30th day of their solidarity
>hunger strike. Also the supporters of the revolutionary struggle in Turkey
>who find themselves in the prisoners of Europe are completing their 21st day
>of hunger strike.
>The prisoner's demand that they shall not be forced to enter isolation cells
>is a concern that all progressive and democratic human beings should share.
>The policy of oppression against political prisoners in Turkey manifests
>itself with massacres and tortures. In a land where people go hungry the
>regime is spending millions on building isolation cells. They aim to make
>political prisoners surrender their beliefs and to turn prisons into torture
>centres. The resistance of the prisoners is the hope of the people; the
>prisoners will never abandon their beliefs or their love of the people.
>We ask you what can you do at this time? How can you show your support?
>The prisoners urgently need vitamin B1 to help them through this period. If
>everyone were to send 200mg this would be a great help. Also we need people
>to go to Turkey on a delegation to see the developments as they happen daily
>and to see the families of the prisoners.
>It is also important that people send protest messages to the government and
>support messages to the prisoners and their families. Wherever you are in
>the world it is a right and a duty to resist oppression. Wherever you are in
>the world it is your duty to support those who resist.
>We strongly believe that the actions of concerned Europeans can save lives
>in the prisons of Turkey. Please use your influence and help us prevent the
>introduction of isolation cells in Turkey.

>FOR THE ATTENTION OF PUBLIC OPINION
>
>On October 20, 825 prisoners in the jails of Turkey announced that they were
>starting a hunger strike. What do these people want, why are they on hunger
>strike? The reason is that they are compelled to by conditions. Nobody
>submits their own body to death just out of the blue. Moreover this death by
>hunger comes very slowly indeed. So these people must have legitimate
>reasons to lay down and die.
>What reasons are these?
>If it were necessary to give an example, the most telling proof is that one
>third of the cases taken before the European Court of Human Rights have the
>state in Turkey as the accused party. It suffices to say that on the subject
>of human rights violations on a world scale, Turkey is one of the states
>most often brought to court.
>This can be ascertained just by regularly glancing through the reports by
>Amnesty International.
>The state's policy is one of subjecting people to torture by the hundred,
>raping them in custody by the hundred, for torture is a matter of policy. On
>occasions in the prisons, dozens of people have been savagely slaughtered.
>Just remember the Buca massacre, the Umraniye massacre, the Diyarbakir
>massacre and Ulucanlar. The European Parliament, the Council of Europe and
>the European Court of Human Rights know all of these things. The state in
>Turkey has been condemned and held responsible on a great many occasions, in
>dozens of reports written and drafted on this subject. The secret buildings
>of the police stations, the security departments, military garrisons and
>intelligence service offices of Turkey are torture centres. Thousands, both
>women and men, have been raped. Thousands of our people have been
>slaughtered. A significant part of this torture and murder has become known
>to various European institutions. Again, Turkey has been condemned on
>numerous occasions by the European Court of Human Rights on this account.
>Look at this picture: on the one hand, while the bloody-handed fascist mafia
>gangs can move around freely at the state's behest, our sons and daughters
>who love the people are thrown into prison.
>And those whose only crime is that they love their homeland and people and
>who oppose tyranny, torture, injustice and surrender have begun a hunger
>strike. The fascist state in Turkey wants to put people in cells, to make
>their souls surrender as well as their bodies. World opinion is bearing
>witness to a massacre.
>In 1984 four prisoners lost their lives on hunger strike.
>In 1996 twelve prisoners lost their lives on hunger strike.
>In the year 2000, are you at all curious how many prisoners will die?
>Let us say this: if sensitive human beings do not intervene immediately,
>there is nothing to stop the fascist state in Turkey from letting dozens of
>human beings die, or exposing them to the illnesses that are a consequence
>of prolonged hunger striking.
>Since November 19, the 30th day of the hunger strike, 99 prisoners have been
>on the Death Fast, and since November 29, the 40th day, a Second Death Fast
>Team has started. The prisoners' demands are just, while it is illegitimate
>to throw them in cells, slaughter them in cells and torture them. Let us act
>to prevent the state in Turkey's attempt at a massacre.
