Turkish coffee has been considered the "milk of chess players and thinkers"
since the 16th century when congregating in coffee shops to play backgammon
and chat about politics first emerged as a cultural pastime, according to
Turkey.org, the Website for the Washington, D.C. Embassy of the Republic
of Turkey.

However, now that some of these coffee shops have evolved into Internet
cafes, the activity isn't considered as safe as it once was. Approximately
130 Turkish children were briefly detained by police in the Turkish town
of Kirikkale, just east of Ankara, for hanging out in Internet cafes where
officials worried they could be corrupted, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

The police were apparently responding to complaints that the cafes were
filled with cigarette smoke, and that the children could potentially access
pornographic Websites in addition to playing backgammon, according to the
Reuters report which cites a statement by the Kirikkale police chief in the
Milliyet daily newspaper.

The children were apparently instructed to stay at home and complete their
homework and were warned that they would be detained again if caught in the
Internet cafes.

The total online population of Internet users in Turkey is approximately
2.5 million, a penetration of about 5 percent, according to eMarketer.
