You'll recall Dan that you were tired, the engine was hot from adjusting
it all day (carb I think it was?), and you just didn't want to fool with
it any more.  We only did two or three run-ups as I recall and sometimes
it takes three or four.  In very unusual cases, as much as 10.  I just
did an RV-8 and it took 10.  I did an RV-6 immediately after and it only
took four.  I did a Katana recently that took two - with a third just to
check it.  

In the case of Ol' Blue we didn't check prop track or make sure
everything (spinner, backplate, spinner bulkhead, etc.) was tight.  Also,
in the case of carb problems, there may have been (and probably was since
you were working on it) a combustion issue . . . as was the case with the
RV-8 that took 10 run-ups.  His Ellison & intake manifold set-up is not
good.  There's a very wide difference between his richest cylinder and
his leanest cylinder.  Combustion problems can interfere with getting a
consistent low reading on the Dynavibe.  In such cases, the problem is
with the fuel/air distribution, not with the balancer.   Combustion
problems can come from other things as well, and all of them can
interfere with correcting mass imbalance issues.  

The Dynavibe was working properly that day.   It had been a long day for
Ol' Blue and we just didn't have enough time to work it out.  

As for Mark's attempt, as he says, he just didn't push the button to
start taking data.  As easy as it is to use, you still have to push the
buttons.  

Really guys, I've done a variety of planes now, RV's, Cessna's, a Katana,
a couple KR's (not including Ol Blue), and the machine works very
reliably & well.  If anyone is thinking of getting one, you won't be
disappointed.  Mike at Dynavibe is extremely helpful if there are any
questions or any problems, but you'll see as Mark and I both have that
there are no "gotchas" or quirks or difficulties with the Dynavibe.  

The Dynavibe has just attained NIST certification with an error tolerance
of "0", which is better than the next balancer up the chain -  the
Microvibe II.  That one costs about 6K and is more difficult than the
Dynavibe to use from what I hear, but it's not just the price difference
that recommends the Dynavibe . . . the thing just works.  

No . . . I don't get any discounts for speaking kindly of the Dynavibe. 
I'm just real pleased with it and naturally enthusiastic to have a tool
that works so well.

Hy Steve. I never worried once about you running off with the cowling. 
I  know how long it takes to get things done.
I am FINALLY this week looking like I'll get the shop ready to pull the 
plane into. I'm expecting to pull her in Wednesday, maybe Thursday. I've 
decided to stop (or drastically reduce) working on everyone else's music 
equipment and dedicate myself to this project. I have been working with 
a fellow over at our local EAA chapter. He has a few planes. I'm working 
primarily on his Christian Eagle Biplane electrical system. I already 
reworked his Intercom system, and still have improvements to make on it, 
so I've been busy and I'm enjoying it. Now it's time to fit my KR into 
the rotation.
I have 11 hours of flying time in so far, and I'm still having problems 
with stalls and such. There's just SO MUCH to remember when I'm up 
there, not to mention the stress of having the instructor in my face 
most of the time. Its to be expected I understand, because I need to be 
able to deal with the whole process of flying, but it IS a bit 
overwhelming most times. I expect to be able to get my stalls right 
tomorrow and start on  my steep turns.  HOPEFULLY Ill finally get it 
down onto the runway by myself too! I'll keep you informed.

BTW..EAA479 will have a booth at the Keesler AFB Air show April 4 and 5 
down here in Biloxi. The Thunderbirds are going to be performing, so I 
hope you can make it down for the show, and any other members of the KR 
crew. Airports close by are Biloxi / Gulfport international, and the 
Ocean Springs airport. Further out to the west are Diamondhead (66Y) and 
Stennis,  with Trent Lott to the east.

I was the first guy to try it, and I think it would have worked if I'd have 
simply remembered to push the button to start it taking data.  My guess on 
the second try was he was using a setup with too much distance between prop 
and optical sensor or because the reflective tape was on the blade (which 
doesn't work as well as on the spinner backing plate), but that's just a 
guess.  Setting it up in the shade of a hangar works best so you can 
actually see the red dot on the back of the spinner (or prop blade) and know 
exactly where to put the tape.  Anything else is trial and error.

I have worked on a design to build a twin KR with 1835 vw engines. If not 
for Ken I would not got in to aviation, the love he had for aviation I can't 
explain, I only talked to him three times but great talks, I am still
hooked on the twin KR idea. I stayed in the Army for eight and half years to 
learn what I could about aviation
I was a mechanic on CH47 Chinook helicopters then worked for Alaska Airlines 
(sea tac), I worked for Columbia Helicopters and Everts Airfuel ( Cargo 
express) in Fairbanks Ak, I worked on DC-6s, C46s,
and a old Caribue aircraft I love old roundy round engine wasp 2800s and 
2000s. Well I have talked enough.

Hi Guys and Girls;



I had two different fellows hook up their Dynavibes to Ol' Blue at last
years KR Gathering to check for vibration on my new prop/spinner and neither
could get it to work properly even though it worked fine on their aircraft
and neither of them could be considered uneducated by any means. Maybe this
year?

I was hoping that Mark, Joe and Dan were going to be able to make it to my 
flyin this past Saturdaythere, it's KR related...but the weather north and 
south of my home airport was, as Mark said, were low ceilings in the morning.  
This kept many people away.  Wish you guys could have made it.  Just a little

Thanks for the vote of confidence Mike.
It sure would be nice to be able to leave the wings on.  The folks in the
street stopped asking if I was building a boat when they saw it out on the
footpath (sidewalk) with the wing on.  A larger work area would be great but
I wonder if I would just fill it with more bits and pieces.  I must say that
even if I did have a big area, I would still build the wing on the jig as I
have already done.  It is so easy to just roll it over to do stuff on the
other side.  Better than having to get someone to help me every time to flip
the KR over.  However, I do have a friendly neighbor who gives me a hand
each time to get the KR off the bench as it is now too heavy to roll it down
the ramps as before.

Who am I kidding?  A larger work area would be fantastic.
