KR> Tip tanks

. Creating conditions to get you an unrecoverable spin or an uncontrollable
wing heavy condition at landing speed are things that can get you killed.

 Jeff Scott
 Los Alamos, NM

Jeff is spot on here. Just think if they had only three gallons each and for
our purpose fuel weighs in at 6 LBS a gallon. If your fuel don't transfer
out of one tank you got 18 lbs sitting on the wing tip. When you get slow
the plane is going to be like a teeter-totter. On final is not the place to
practice spin recovery. I don't care how good you think you are it only
takes one time. Some of the best pilot of our time are no longer with us
because of one mistake why increase our odds. Build smart...fly safe..

KR> Actual work on a KR

2011-09-30 Thread Bob Glidden
Well prior to the gathering I had no plans to finish the KR in my barn aka
the "mouse trap" but since returning from another AWESOME time at Mt Vernon
I decided that I would drag the plane out and give it a shot. I pulled off
the old firewall and took a 2180 vw off a Corby starlet and I'm headed out
for new plywood today to replace the firewall. I or I guess we since my 15
year old is helping would really like to have the front end repairs done and
the engine hung and get the first run on the engine before turkey day in
November. And I guess since Lee is so busy helping everyone else with their
KR work I will have to do all my composite work myselfthanks buddy,
actually he is going to do a pair of wheel pants I got from John B. he mouse
trap will make it to the gathering next year if I have to tow it. About
three years ago I decided I was going to slow working on airplanes and focus
more on my two boy's activities in their lives and believe me they have
many. Well that has not changed I just found a way to do both...get them
interested in airplanes and working on them. Even the wife thinks working in
the barn on airplanes is a good idea. It really was great seeing everyone
this year and it would be awesome to see 40 KR's at Mt Vernon next year.

KRnetHeads,

We talked about having a "race" Saturday morning at the Gathering, weather
permitting. Jeff Lange worked out the details for us a few years ago, and
they're posted at
http://www.krnet.org/misc/KRGatheringPerformance.pdf . It's not called a
race because you don't have to run wide open if you don't want to, although
some folks will want to. This allows you to gauge your progress in
streamlining or sharpening piloting skills in order to improve performance
from one year to the next. Planes depart the starting line in order of
expected finish time, so the gaps between planes should grow throughout the
short run, enhancing safety. I think everybody who's done it has enjoyed
the experience, and I'm looking forward to it again this year.

Anyway, if you want to run it this year, the plan is 9AM Saturday morning.
Please print this out and bring it with you so you'll have the details
already in-hand.

Thanks,

KR> EAA survey

2011-07-06 Thread Bob Glidden
EAA was founded on experimental aircraft, and I'm not thrilled that it's now

being expanded to "spam cans", a segment that is well represented in so many

ways. Warbirds are nice from a nostalgic standpoint, but if I never had to
stop another conversation with a KR builder to plug my ears while a Harrier
showed off in front of the airshow crowd, it would be fine with me.

I think it is funny that the founder of EAA Paul P. started SAA a few years
back because he said EAA was becoming to commercialized. Wonder who
caused/let that happen. It is all about the money now. They would rather
have people giving massages and selling pots and pans then a guy selling
used parts. Anyone that knows me knows I love anything that involves an
airplane and Oshkosh is like therapy. If it was not for the great group of
people that get together every year, (most of them I met through this group)
it would not be worth going. It has became a family trip for us now and has
become the start of our family vacation every year. Oshkosh has always been
the place for anything new in aviation that hits the market. Both EAA and
AOPA are a big voice for GA and do a lot a great things, but I would love to
see the swap meet area get back to what it used to be. Anyone that goes to
Sun-N-Fun knows what I mean, their fly market is awesome. So go ahead and
flame away, but remember this is my opinion and has been shared by many
including the founder himself. We are the members and should have a voice,
if we all keep sending emails to them and voicing our thoughts maybe we can
get it back to the way it was.

The FAA also says that we are responsible to self assess ourselves on rather
or not we are medically fit to fly rather we qualify for a medical or not,
and if you have failed a FAA medical you do not qualify for LSA. I would not
want to be on the wrong end of somebody's mishap flying when they should not
be.

It's my understanding that the FAA say's that your aircraft is what you say
it is. If you call it a powered glider you can fly it without a medical. You

also can fly at any speed and at night. You do have to have a glider
endorsement on your ticket.

That really should point toward the front in addition to venting it is also
a way to put pressure into the tank to help move the fuel better. By
pointing aft it is taking pressure out of the tank when you fly. Only takes

They have plenty of room to camp out.If you really want to enjoy Oshkosh, camp

several KR's there this year. And if you really want info on KR's you need to

Unless I was told wrong 43. anything doe's not apply to your homebuilt
airplane UNLESS you are running a certified engine and then all FAR's,AD's
and such apply.I think Mark L hit the nail on the head with the part about
using good judgement and staying close to a safe landing spot for the first
few hours. Why would you want to put on a fresh engine certified or not and
go flying long distances.I've not seen to many engine put on airplanes that
did not require a little adjusting here and there. But as far as your auto or

2008-10-12 Thread Bob Glidden
Jeff Scott is right on about home built aircraft.Just use common sense and
the adage if they don't ask they really don't want to know.I believe that
according to the FAR's if you rebuild or replace a engine you do fall back
into the test phase. But that is not a bad thing. It is a good idea on a fresh
engine certified or experimental to stay close to the airport for atleast a
few hours.Even if it is professionally built.Even the so called experts make
mistakes. As for 337 again Jeff is correct, they do not apply to home
builts. After your plane is certified the impression I get from the FAA is
good luck and don't call us we'll call you.Now that is the local FSDO
here,yours may be different.

Wow
You know it amazes me that people still don't know how to cut and paste on a
email.I just returned from Michigan after nine days and had almost 400
emails most of which were like the one I just read. Why in the hell did 600
people need to know about somebody talking to a engineer? Why not send it to
the person it was intended for BRIAN brian.kr...@engalt.com and even Brian
would probly like it if you were to cut the previous 5 emails that are
attached to it.Out of all those emails I got, most of them had multiple
emails on each one.If the ability to cut and paste is just way outside the
learning curve then stop by a school sometime and ask a 8 year old how to do
it.

The advantage of an ELSA is the new repairman certificate that lets you
work
 on more than one airplane.

The new mechanic rating for LSA is not as cut and dry as getting a
repairmans cert. You have to get training on each type of LSA that you want
to work on.That is how they are getting around the A issue.Just because
you get qualified to work on your LSA doe's not give you the privledges to
work on someone elses of a different type.I just had a very lengthy talk
with FAA about this issue at Oshkosh. The thought of someone going to a short
8 hour class and then fixing airplanes is scary to even think about.

2008-10-12 Thread Bob Glidden
Mark J and ya'll
Just got off the phone with Lee Van Dyke.He and Richard Shirley and Steve
Glover are in Dodge city Kansas.Said so far the trip has been great.I guess
Richard just gets out ahead of them enough and cuts the engine and waits for
them to catch up.They are hoping to get the heck out of Dodge early and be at
Mark J's airport around 1:00PM.Steve is going to fly with them for a short
while and then peel off to deliver the airplane to the new owner...As for me
I'm out the door to meet the group for breakfast at 6:00AM and we should be on
the road by 7:00AM...SE YA"LLLL.

Langford for the thrill and awesome first KR flight. The airplane is everything
I thought it would be and a lot more.Handling is better then I thought it would
be and I never put my feet on the rudder peddles. Thanks also to Mark Jones,Mark
Langford,Lee Van Dyke,Richard Shirley and can't remember his first name, but his
last name was Klapp (NOT BILL) for the big fun at the campsite.Sorry about the
tent Lee,but hey mine did not leak and Yes Brian Kraut it was the same one I
gave you last year. Can't wait till gathering, but this was a great warm
up.Thanks again to all for a great time
