KR> Ignition noise
Hi Brian, This e-mail just showed upRevmaster sent me Autolite 425 plugs which are resistor plugs according to their web site. Revmaster does use a shielded harness. After telling Joe at revmaster about the radio noise he said what did u gap the plugs at? I said since there were no instructions I left them at .030 as that's what they were all set at, then he said that's my problem, re gap to .016, so I did and believe it or not the noise went away on the ground but in flight it came back about 75% of what it was. So I called an avionics shop and was told to get some shielding ( the tubular variety that is woven like Chinese finger cuff's ) and slide it over the last couple of inches of wire prior to the plug boot and down over the boot as well, and for good measure solder a wire to the shielding and ground that to the block as well. So I'm waiting for the shielding now. I may call Steve at Great Plains, I completely forgot about himThanks! If they are just using a regular spark plug boot that sounds like the problem. I really liked the aluminum shrouds that go over the entire insulator that Steve sells. Steve recomends .014 or .016 or something like that. A magneto really can't fire very well on a big gap. I am kind of surprised your engine kept running good. Ken, The wider plug gap will cause the voltage to build to a higher value before the plug fires. This in turn releases more peak RF energy in a shorter time when the plug fires. This produces a much stronger RF pulse; not good if you want the best radio communications in the aircraft band, but great if you want a spark-gap radio transmitter. An Italian guy, Marconi, discovered this about a 100 years ago. Since Wilber and Orville were not talking to ATC yet, nobody much cared then. But now, with our road warrior mind set, we have shielded plug wires, filter capacitors, resistor plug wires, shielded plugs, resistor plugs, lead dress and all manner of tricks to tame the magical genie in AM radio. He said that is probably most of the problem, regap to .016 they are trying too hard to fire and creating to much RF energy---Does this make sense

Due to the high cost of aviation plugs I decided to buy the Revmaster conversion kit to auto plugs-that being said the engine runs excellant but now I have unbearable ignition noise. If I had to do it over I never would have done this. Any of you radio techs out the know of a solution?? If I have too I will re install a new aviation harness and plugs. Are you using resistor plugs? Great Plains recommeds only Bosch W8AC plugs. I used them and had no noise. I am not familiar with the Revemaster conversion. Great Plains uses an aluminum machined piece that completely covers the plug. The standard shielded ignition wires connect to this piece and keep the plug completely shielded. Steve recommends connectiong a wire from the aluminum piece to the engine if there is noise, but I never had to do that. Does the Revmaster use a shielded harness? Are you using it off of a mag? now I have unbearable ignition noise - Any of you radio techs out there know of a solution?? Kenneth There is no doubt that you can solve your problem without too much trouble (or $$). You will probably get some good advice here - if not, join this yahoo group: http://www.avionicsinstallations.com/ I keep an eye on their posts - some well informed lads that are happy to help. Good luck Steve J Zambia

Thanks Steve--I already sent them an Email. The auto plugs should have an R in the number. These are the resistor version of the standard plugs and will greatly reduce radio interference (Rotax changed their plugs to resistor type for this reason). If all else fails, buy some metal braid that is used for grounding straps, etc. Put it over the ignition wires from the plug to the distributor/magneto. Use heat shrink tubing at each end. Ground just one end of each wire at the distributor. If you ground both ends, then you have a conductor rather than a shield and it won't work. I've done these two things to the Rotax 582 in my Renegade. I can hear people in the pattern at airports a hundred miles away. Jim Vance va...@claflinwildcats.com

Thanks Jim-Someone told me the power wire to the radio needs to be sheilded as the eng noise is conducted through the radio via this wire?? "Someone told me the power wire to the radio needs to be sheilded as the eng noise is conducted through the radio via this wire??" A power filter can be fitted to the power bus of the radio stack. You can see similar devices attached to most car stereo power leads for just this reason.
KR> Ignition noise
Ken, A brute force line filter at the power inlet of the radio stack is great insurance. Then it's not important to have a shielded power wire. The ignition noise can be getting into the radio on the power wire or on the antenna. One quick check is to have the engine running and disconnect the coaxial cable at the radio. If the noise goes away, it's coming in on the antenna. Then the only solution is to stop the noise at the source. Jim Vance va...@claflinwildcats.com
