There seems to be a patch in the kde bugs forum against this bug.
Is it possible for the kubuntu admins to prepare an upgrade which embeds this

Yuriy: The .desktop files for GTK and other non-KDE apps have to be patched to
work with the system:/ kio. I've noticed that the most recent OpenOffice
packages have been patched for this, it's just a matter of getting the other

When I first used Linux, I was drawn to Konqueror and in particular the way
compressed files just open as if they are not compressed. I see no reason why
kubuntu has to alter the functionality of the default konqueror setup at all.
Modifying Konqueror is not ubuntu or KDE, nor intuitive.

had an interface manually configured or managed by network-manager. This

Have since discovered that if browsing files using the GUI it uses such
protocols as system:/ and media:/ the various apps recognize these as
remote address and causes some problems. Rewriting the address bar from
something like media:/sda1/f.jpg to /media/sda1/f.jpg makes it work.
