I am sorry.. I missed a step. Here is the amended process:
Could you please attach a debug log from K3b for us? If you are running
KDE then here are the steps necessary to create the debug log then
restore your settings to their previous state. You can copy and paste
the commands into these
Just my $0.02, but I have been unable to use Amarok since my last
upgrade (months ago now) because of this. I eventually found a post
somewhere suggesting I install libxine1-ffmpeg, and was about to file a
(duplicate) bug to inform the community of this.

I can confirm this bug on the stable release of Karmic, with KDE 4.3.4
updates applied. Furthermore, the iwlist wlan0 scan essid hiddenap
workaround doesn't work for me. Knetworkmanager simply refuses to
acknowledge the existence of the hidden AP even though iwlist sees it.

I'd really like to purge my systems of this failsafe-x nonsense. Is
there documentation some where that explain how to disable the
ironically named program? When I was bit by this bug, I didn't have
access to another computer to search for a solution. I didn't have a
console to read the logs.
Wow this is looking promising. So once this is integrated in to Ubuntu
we can consider upgrading to 9.10? And the outcome of this is that the
brightness key will no longer work but that's the only side effect?

No, the brightness key will still work with this patch. And you get back
the eight brightness level. The main problem is that the implementation
is really ugly. More work will be required before it can be intergrated
upstream I think (detection of broken BIOS must be moved into
