as mentioned in my last post the problem is solved for me.
Rout source was missing packages that hat to be resolved from multiverse
repository.
It was a warty to dapper upgrade problem.

release candidate and didn't hear sound anymore. I made a fresh
installation over breezy (where the sound works fine ... ) Is someone

It is likely a problem related to artsd.

It is quite strange
- command line sound (e.g. mpg321) works fine
- arts system sounds (e.g. during logon and logoff) works fine
- but any KDE multimedia program does not work
Deleting any kde and qt config file befor login does not change.
Comparing /etc/kde3 with a dir from a fresh dapper drake
The UID is member of group 29 (audio).

same with me.
I upgraded hoary to dapper.
I upgraded dapper today.
Any sound directly using alsa is OK, e.g. mpg123.
Any KDE program does not work (amarok, noautom, juk, ...).
Sound hardware in KDE control center is configured "autodetect".

Ignore my last comment: problem was that new user did not have permissions to
/dev/asp (was not in "audio" group).

This also happened to me with recent updates of Kubuntu Dapper. I had fresh
installed Kubuntu Flight4 + more or less daily upgrades. Sound feature droped
just before release of Flight6.

I did a dist-upgrade so it seems that there may be some junk config causing
problems.
I tried a live-cd and sound worked fine.
On further investigation this appears to be related to alsa. Under the live
cd, I have a sub device configured:
/proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/sub0/status:
state: RUNNING
