Hi there, can anyone remind me how best to treat a newly acquired straw
pillow? I've no reason to suspect it is infected with beasties but is it
better to assume it is? Also I can't remember whether it's better to bake it
or freeze it. It has a wooden base with a wooden ring attached so if I was
Hi
Has anyone travelled with their lace pillow as hand luggage recently (flown,
that is)? Any problems with the pins?
Thanks,
Debra (in Mozambique) but flying to Australia next week.

I have tried to create the pattern myself from a pattern that I found for a
round doily but I have not been able to create the corners. Now, I am
running out of time and need to find a pattern.
If you like that pattern, use it without fabricated corners.
I received the copy of Sally Barry's book, Luton Lace Treasury Vol 1, two days, and am
thrilled with it. For
those of you who haven't seen it - it is a self-published book of 50 Bucks point lace

The patterns are stunning, and the prickings and diagrams are so clear. The
lace is so beautifully worked.
I haven't seen the book yet, but I know from Sally's contributions to the
NELG newsletter that yes, she makes excellent prickings and diagrams.
Hi Debra -
I have not flown with a pillow yet... That's a challenge I
won't mind putting off for a while!!
But I have traveled with other lacemakers, where our
combined luggage barely fit into the trunk of our car.
One of the first things that happened when I started making
lace was that all
I remember studying history in school and being told to imagine how thrilling
it must have been to have discovered the Grand Canyon or to have been with
Lewis and Clark as they saw things never seen before...
There is still some excitement in seeing these things for yourself, but
something is lost
. . .And in the event that I would want to have a bigger pillow, I think I'd
splurge and purchase an inexpensive 20 cookie, and then cut it in two places so that
it folded like a gate-leg table. (I'd avoid a center cut, because I don't like working
across
the cut). If the pillow had two cuts,
I suppose there might be something to that... But for me,
seeing it myself is the thrill. I've seen pictures of the
Rockies, I've seen pictures of glaciers in Alaska, I've seen
pictures of the stunning vistas in the Grandfather Mountains
of North Carolina... but they're absolutely nothing
Hi Spiders,
I've been thinking about the reactions to the IOLI Bulletin preview. My own take is
that until I see it, I haven't seen it. For me it's the old question of art,
which always means the seeing to me. Everything I make is an edition, meaning an
edited version, of what I chose to

The topic isn't really about lacemaking and this list has lots of
members who don't get the IOLI bulletin anyway.

Hi,
Just a note to let you know that I dearly love this list. But due to ill
health I am unable to keep up with all the e-mails I get from this and other
lists. Some day soon I hope to be back on my feet and will rejoin.
Until then I will be unsubscribing.

Diane,
I know just how you feel about getting your son started on BL. I was
thrilled when my daughter (5 1/2) wanted to learn, and this past
Saturday she had 3 sessions on her bookmark, and learnt half and double

the actual apron bit (where the bobbins actually sit whilst work is in

I did something similar to what Clay is suggesting. My travel pillow has a soft apron

together with thin polystyrene.) I cut it into 3 pieces the same shape as the apron
then covered all of the pieces with

Hi Debra,
I've flown with my lace pillow, usually an 18 or 20 without a problem and
have checked it but with a fragile sticker just using my regular cloth
pillow bag. You can usually get an 18 or smaller pillow in the overhead
compartment of many of the airplanes except for the crop dusters but

It's so easy to lose your place in it, and some people go a very long
time
before overcoming their fear of it. Cloth stitch (CTC) is so easy to

By now you will have discovered we can't post attachments to the list -
