The early lace machines tried to replicate known lace styles.  Some styles they could do partially but they had to have some work done by hand.  For example, gimp  and picots.  If a lace style had a gimp outline on the motifs, this would be sewn in by hand with a needle.  If the lace style

Hi Brian Honiton lace comprised of motifs that were either connected together by ‘brides’ or mounted onto a net ground for making up into the finished article, so perhaps the term lace sewer is referring to the women whose job this was? The term lace worker may have been used interchangeably
