to thank everyone for all their responses, and all the wonderfully varied

Another reason for an external site is just that - it's external to
the list. Currently the only people who can read the Arachne messages
are members of the list. A blog, however, can be seen by anyone surfing
to the site. This has the potential to attract new lacemakers/list members.

Good luck on your blog. It looks like a very worthwhile endeavour. One
suggestion I would make is that you get a more stable email address
for it, like a Gmail, Hotmail, or Yahoo account. If you don't want an
extra account to check, Gmail can be set up to forward emails
automatically to yo

I find that arachne and a blog are completely different to use as a
reference document.
Something coming into arachne is there and then it's gone, unless you go to
