I think the coin as a coin would be worthless as it has been soothed down -
and not only that, it is illegal in the UK - and for all I know, in most
other countries too - to 'deface a coin of the realm' - so it probably not a
good idea to do that to currency!

Good morning All,
Whatever the story behind this bobbin, it is certainly very beautiful.
The story that was suggested may not be too far off the mark. It would
certainly not be one of a bucketload that was made to commemorate a
single engagement during the early days of the First World War.
Just thought some of you might like to see the most
expensive bobbin in the world! It sold last night for
$511.77! I'm not making any comment about the value of this
bobbin (heck - I had a bid of $20 on the thing early on - so
what do I know?? ;)) It really is quite elegant, and has a
story
I like the way the seller assumes from the presence of the coin on which the
back has been smoothed down and engraved L Battery, R.H.A. Nery, Sept. 1,
1914. Battery implies that the bobbin was given by a survivor of the battle
to his sweetheart. This is what separates the successful antique
Actually, not. This is not the most expensive bobbin in the world. When I
commissioned Stuart Johnson to make Sylvia the bone and 18 Kt. gold bobbins
and then had to have 18Kt gold beads made to spangle them, I thought they
were the most expensive bobbins in the world. Then Brian Lemmin told me
