[lace] European Project "BOBBINLACEE"

2022-01-16 Thread Janice Blair
Thank you for posting the link. Fascinating and lots to read and comprehend.
So far I have looked at Austria and Italy reports but I need to do some actual
work.  Hopefully I will get back to reading them all. I wish the Italy report
had photos of the finished laces as I work better when I see how it should
look.Thanks again,Janice

Re: [lace] History of Lacemaking Coming to America

2022-01-16 Thread Elena Kanagy-Loux
Dear Jean,

I saw Arlene's research on the Spiro mound lace in Oklahoma as well and was
absolutely fascinated! Devon Thein informed me that an IOLI member
replicated the same piece on a bobbin lace pillow and published it in a
Bulletin article back in 2013 or so (pardon, I don't have her name handy).
Apparently the Spiro mounds site is working on some sort of exhibition in
the future, so hopefully it will be safe to travel by then.

What's especially neat is that the Spiro mounds example is
braided/interlaced like bobbin lace, rather than knotted or woven like
Andean chancay lace. I had the same thought about lace potentially
originating in the Indegenous Americas and traveling to Europe as the
timing is fitting, but complex braiding has a pretty global history so it's
surprising that more regions didn't develop bobbin lace-style techniques.

Certainly exciting food for thought, and I'm looking forward to seeing what
Angharad publishes!

Best Wishes,
Elena

Re: [lace] History of Lacemaking Coming to America

2022-01-16 Thread J Reardon
I looked through the book Elena linked. It has pre-Colombian examples of
bobbin lace, also, which reminded me of a post on Facebook Lacemakers a while
back by Arlene Scaroni who is working on replicating lace found in Native
American mounds in Oklahoma. I believe it was similar to netting, used for
holding pottery. She demonstrates a technique where the bobbin threads hang on
a structure rather than working on a flat surface. If I remember right, she
suggests it’s possible early European explorers learned the technique from
the indigenous people and took the knowledge back to Europe.

An IOLI.lecture from the doily free zone creator, however, mentioned a recent
discovery of bobbin lace in a European grave from the early 1400s, though more
details won’t be available until a study is published. I guess that would
negate the Western Hemisphere first theory. But we’re learning more all the
time about ancient travels, so who knows. It's interesting to contemplate.

I did not trim the message below to keep the context & link and because it’s
short.

[lace] Flickr photos for Arachne

2022-01-16 Thread Sue Babbs
Hi All

One of our members reminded me this weekend, that it is time to consider
our Flickr Subscription. In 2020, a group of Arachneans helped pay for a
2 year subscription, which expires mid-April 2022. The two year plan is
no longer available. The cost to us in April will be $72 for one year.

Arachne barely has any conversations these days, so I am no longer sure
whether we still wish to host photos on the internet.

I thought I'd raise this topic now so that we have time to discuss
keeping our Flickr Pro account. If we decide not to keep it we will
still have enough time for people to download any photos they want
mid-April.

So over to all of you:
firstly do we still want to keep this Flickr Pro account and
secondly, if we do, are there 12 people each willing to pay $6 to share
the costs of the account? Or 24 people to pay $3 each?

Please do not send me any money until we have corporately decided on
whether we want to keep the account
