Re: [lace] Flickr
Hello Miriam and Arachne, Miriam and I have been around on Arachne a long time.  I have been a very big fan of Arachne for a decade or more. I didn't realize that it had faded to relative obscurity because it was such a slow, progressive decline. I love having messages delivered to me in my email mailbox. So it wasn't until a couple of years ago that I realized that I wasn't getting much from Arachne or my other tatting listserve. Someone told me, listserves are dead. And from what I can see, they are basically right. It was with much drama that I went searching for 'where have all the tatters gone'. I work full-time and when I'm not at work, I spend my time tatting and authoring/publishing tatting books.  I just don't have the time to go from blog to blog for information. I found out about a site called InTatters.  This site too does not suit my time contraintsI just don't have the time/patience to go to the site and then try to find pertinant info (to me) while wading through all the 'I think it's beautifull too' comments. Thus it was will heavy heart I waded into the FaceBook world. Other than the fact that my work has FB blocked on all work computers, I have found it less annoying than what I thought I would. I bought a tiny computer that I can haul with me to work (Asus Transformer---love it!) and use to log onto the wireless network and read/post to FB. I seems to meet my needs in that messages come to meinstead of me having to go find them. So far I'm on a couple of tatting-related groups. FB is a whole new type of site and has its own protocols that I am trying to understand. The 'young people' just seem to instinctively know how to use FB...which only makes my fumbling with it al the more frustrating. But despite that statement, FB really is the way to go anymore. Any suggestions  for good FB lacemaking, tatting, or needlelacing groups to join? I will post later about which groups I have enjoyed. Karen BovardThe ShuttleSmithOmaha, NEwww.TheShuttleSmith.com PS. I just finished up and submitted 3 tatting books for publishing/printing this weekend More on that too at a later time. On Monday, June 29, 2015 3:29 AM, Miriam Gidron mgid...@netvision.net.il wrote: Beth wrote the problem with a closed facebook group is that it will exclude all those arachne members like myself who are not on facebook and don't intend to join .. Re: [lace] Wish list of teachers
If I could choose from the past, it would be Raie Clare; alas, a teacher also deceased, I have heard. This was the lady whose Book of Bobbin Lace got me started. I'd seen someone's lace pillow and it captivated me, although I'd never seen lace being made. Then I found Raie Clare's video in our local library, and was at once inspired to believe that this was something I could do too. So I went out and bought her book and pack of patterns, and contacted a supplier listed in the back of the book and bought a beginner's pillow and other necessities. Her book is here on amazon:- http://www.amazon.co.uk/Book-Bobbin-Lace-Raie-Clare/dp/0852197101/ref=sr_1_1?s=booksie=UTF8qid=1435584872sr=1-1keywords=Raie+Clare and I see that it was published in 1987. It was still in print when I bought it: can it really have been so long ago? I couldn't have had a better start, and have loved making lace ever since. No-one ever seems to mention her: does anyone know anything about her? Linda in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, U.K., (where it's cool and cloudy. Re: [lace] New Binche on Flickr
Yes, I posted a picture of the most recent finished piece! It is the Jerusalem Church in Brugge, which for many years was the home of the Kantcentrum. The lace was originally designed by Lieve van Landschoot as part of the Lieflijk Brugge project created by the Masterclass Binche at the Kantcentrum. A handsome fold-out was printed and Binche devotees were eager to have the patterns. About this time, the Masterclass was experimenting with the angle of the grid they designed on, and agreed that the pieces should be re-drawn on the new grid before being published. By then, Lieve had passed away, and the new design for the Jerusalem Church was a collaborative effort between Anne Marie Verbeke and Anny Noben Slegers. The folio was finally printed two years ago, and sold out almost immediately. I completed The Minnewater that year, and have just finished Jerusalem Kerk. I sent a photo to Anny and she sent it along to Anne-Marie. I was absolutely thrilled to get a lovely note from Anne-Marie, complementing me on my work! Thank you Barbara for adding Madame Goubaud to my reading list. Surely I will be better prepared for the next demo at a historical home, of which there are many in Western Pennsylvania Northeastern Ohio! We had a good turnout yesterday in Niles, OH in spite of the intermittent downpours. The Ward Thomas house is decorated in period style with many original furnishings memorabilia from the two families. This included a gown worn by one of the occupants when she attended Alice Lee Roosevelt's White House wedding to Mr. Longworth. It was ivory featured princess lace medallions of metallic embroidery. Our group was seated in the library where W. Aubrey Thomas, a member of Congress, met with his constituents in the early 1900's. In addition to needle lace, we demonstrated tatting, Irish crochet, Bedfordshire lace lucet cording. Some patrons even recognized what we were making would like to learn! Re: [lace] Smoke
I usually don't contribute to the forum as I am just absorbing everything, being a relative 'newby' on the lace scene, but as an avid book collector and bookworm, and not very partial to the smell of cigarettes in my house, this is a subject I do know quite a bit about. Especially the solution - I love herbs, the perfect antidote:-)I would suggest doing what people did to keep books and scrolls protected over the ages... They used 'strewing herbs' - yes, it wasn't just used to walk over - in the backs of the bookshelves that not only chased away moths and other troublemakers, but it also provided a lovely fragrance to the books. And best of all, it provides an excuse to make some more lace - not to mention lovely special gifts... :-) How about little 'strewing bags' to protect your valuable book collections? Drop them in at the back of the shelf, or scatter them on top, hang them anywhere...The best known being lavender, but there is ample information available on the subject. I love Lemon Verbena too, and there is Rosemary... LOTS to choose from:-) Marietjie from deep in the rather cold Bushveld From: Bespokethreadsandyarns bespokethreadsandya...@gmail.com To: lace@arachne.com lace@arachne.com Sent: Monday, June 29, 2015 4:12 PM Subject: [lace] Smoke Conservators would know what works. I have used white vinegar to freshen my carpet. While I would hesitate to spray any on the book itself, I wonder if leaving the book open near a bowl of white vinegar might help? I've also mixed a little baking soda to a larger amount of white vinegar with a couple of drops of mild essential oil (not perfume) and sprayed it on my carpets to freshen it and it seemed to work. I wouldn't put the oil near a book, but perhaps some of the baking soda in the bowl of vinegar and leave it near the open book? Just mix it over a sink since the vinegar and baking soda have such an explosive effect on one another! Re: [lace] Smoke smell in books
It takes time and air. We had a used book that I was unable to use - I'm very sensitive to smoke. This was an expensive volume with many coated pages and color pictures but out of print. I laid it open on a stool in front of a fan. I flipped the pages to a new spot every time I passed. Eventually the smell faded. It's going to happen quicker if air is circulating over the pages rather than sitting closed on a shelf. I think it took a few months. (fan only ran in the daytime) I did spray it with Febreeze. It didn't seem to harm the book, but I won't swear that it sped up the process either. I don't think there are any instant fixes. The odor was absorbed into the paper and has to work its way back out. Judy in soggy S. Re: [lace] Smoke smell in books
I’ve already emailed Malvary privately, but thought I’d mention to the list that I found an online blog post from a library that removed smoke smell from books with something called Gonzo Odor Eliminator. According to the post it worked very well, and as this was a library treating their own books, I think it would be a fairly paper-safe procedure. (PS: don’t use vinegar on your books - they have enough troubles with acidity as it is) Home Depot’s website has this to say about how it works: The Gonzo 32 oz. Odor Eliminator For Homes Bag is designed to trap airborne odors and help keep your rooms smelling fresh. The odorless, non-toxic volcanic crystals have millions of surfaces and channels containing an electrical charge that acts as a magnet to attract and hold unpleasant airborne odors. The all-natural crystals are renewable and can continue to work for years. Environmentally safe and can be placed near pet odors, in basements, underneath car seats or in other areas in the home where lingering odors are a problem.” It’s not very expensive, and I think it’s worth a try. Re: [lace] Smoke smell in books
There is nothing in my Conservation / Restoration books about smoke odors in books. But, I know that restoration experts are called in after a fire that leaves smoke and water damage on books in museum libraries. While looking at my rather large collection of Conservation / Restoration books, I found a warning about placing anything chemical directly on antique books Specifically, leather bound ones. The least invasive and logical advice given by a previous Arachne correspondent, would be opening a book and letting a fan feed the pages with clean air, though it will take some time. This way, you will not have impacted any of the chemicals used in manufacturing leather, wood pulp or rag paper, glues used in binding, and chemical inks. Forced airing also helps with mould odors. Here is what I do with those sweet-smelling cloths used in laundry dryers. Here in the country, mice invade the garage during mating season. They like to build nests under the car hood in colder weather, and they can do harm to the car's wiring. I put the cloths wherever in the car they will go without causing harm to the car: glove compartment, pockets built into doors, under floor mats, etc. The odor repels mice. An alternative has always been moth balls, but inhaling something sweet is much preferred. Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Research Center In a message dated 6/29/2015 9:27:58 A.M. [lace] Lace history timeline
Susan I'm not aware of such a timeline, and I am somewhat leery of creating one. I have many times thought about something like that, but have shied off each time. The reason is that the timeline, just for bobbin and needle lace alone, is enormously complex, convoluted, and open to disagreement. Creating a timeline alone would not be much help without photos to illustrate. Laces prior to 1700 are almost impossible to find photos of online, though I have a few. My pinboards on pinterest are partly an attempt to deal with one aspect of the problem, namely the various kinds which have names. I do have specific markers in my head for when certain technical elements appeared. But even sorting something like continental part lace into a coherent dated sequence is very difficult. The amount of work involved is daunting. The best I can offer at present is to suggest you look at my boards. In many cases (but not universally, yet) I have attached dates which I believe are reasonably correct. But in many cases I have mixed modern interpretations of a type into a group which has historical pieces, so viewers can see how modern design can express the same working methods. And I readily admit that my understanding of the details of needle lace history does not come anywhere near my understanding of bobbin lace history. There is one thing to keep in mind pertaining to the various needlework encyclopedias that were written between 1850 and 1920 -- they represent styles of lace that would be popular among hobbyists -- the people who would be buying and using those books. Professional lacemakers, who represent the peak of skill and knowledge, would not be using those books. They would not need to. Also anything involving machine made net could not possibly exist before 1780 (or thereabouts), when the net making machines were invented, and virtually all of it is later than 1820. https://www.pinterest.com/lynxlacelady/ Lorelei Halley - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. As a history student, I really love time-lines. But I find that the most difficult aspect is finding a way to integrate the geographical aspect. Sorry to make your task more difficult, but I think that the location of the lace's making must be at least as important as the date and style. However, I look forward with great interest to every attempt to achieve this research project, and hope that we might share in seeing the work-in-progress. Hi Beth, I was of the same opinion, never to join facebook, but I finally did and especially for the lace makers group and I'm glad I did iot. The pictures the ladies post , of their work, is really special. You don't have to read everything or add to the comments. I just enjoy the beautiful lace other people are making. Miriam in sunny Arad, Israel At least with the flickr page we can all see it/add photos even if we don't have our own flickr account. Beth In a sunny Cheshire, NW England, so I will be gardening rather than lacemaking today Clay Blackwell wrote: What I did see was an old post from David Collier who had suggested we create a closed group on Facebook. I don't remember seeing this when he posted it, but it appeals to me more and more. Any other comments? [lace] Lace timeline.
This is not my subject however, as a self appointed guardian of East Midland lace activities I would like to point you to H J Yallop. The History of the Honiton Lace Industry. Exeter Press. I know that Mrs Bury Palliser. History of Lace. Dover Press, does not have a good reputation for accuracy. However she does history in a somewhat chatty manner, and i can not think that all her writing is incorrect. She is a good source of a wide ranging history of lace. I would suggest that users of her book check the facts a little more than usual. In a non academic way, I rather like her book! Of course, you will all know that Gertrude Whiting is my favourite writer of all things lace and tools. However i could not point you to one of her books that would be particularly useful in creating a timeline. Oh, I almost forgot, I suspect a lot of information could be gleaned from Alexandra Stilwell’s, Illustrated Dictionary of Lacemaking, Cassel. [sorry!!] I might remind you of more than a few of my publications on lace tools were as a result of excellent cooperation of members of this group. I think this group could provide most of the information needed for such a “timeline”. I like “timelines” good luck and good cooperation. With smiles of encouragement. [lace] Lace history timeline-correction
It is in the Illustrated Dictionary of Lace, by Gwynne, not the Illustrated History of Lace. Thanks to Adele Shaak for drawing my attention to this error. RE: [lace] Smoke smell in books
Hi Malvary, Beloved was an archivist for many years, and said most of the advice given is sound. Fresh air is the best. Keep the book open and flip the pages every few days. Make sure it's in a place that has low humidity. He liked the idea of the fan close by to keep the air moving. Another way is to put it in a closed container with a dish of baking soda or activated charcoal. Change the baking soda or activated charcoal regularly. Again, page flipping is recommended. I would be careful with herbs.lavender flowers can be slightly oily. Test the herbs by laying them on a piece of paper first. All of these take time and patience. Good luck!
