[lace] Threads

2018-09-03 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
I used a polycotton for the Dress Cap I made (in navy, as I am white-haired
now, and white lace would not show up !! )
I did not enjoy using the thread, as it did not want to stay in the hitch
around the bobbin!, but otherwise the finished product turned out very well .
the best part is that it never creases, so I can just pull it out of the case
I keep it in, (with other doilies, neck tie etc) and wear it. A cotton lace
piece would need ironing, but not the Polycotton piece!

I have used 50 Aurofil for Needlelace (and won a prize for it!) and it was
really nice to use. I did a small piece of Gros Point type, and the sheen just
enhances the work.
I found the 28 weight Aurofil rather loosely spun, and only tried it for
bobbin Lace. I did not like it a lot.
Regards from Liz. In sunny Melbourne, Oz.

I have used their thread and liked it very well. The thread of theirs that I
have used is linen. I am not aware that they made cotton threads. Their 80/2
linen is comparable in size to tatting cotton #80. Bockens 80/2 would be a
bit finer, because Bockens tends to twist their threads more tightly, which
results in a thinner thread.

The cone is plastic and measures 4.5 in. or 11.5 mm. high. Am I correct
that it is 80/2 cotton?

That would make sense of the thread being larger than the 80/2 Brok
cotton! Lorri, when you looked at it under magnification, is the FFR
thread fuzzy or smooth? and is the twist the same direction as the Brok
cotton? S or Z? Is the cone cool to the touch when you pick it up?

To the experts out there, how does one differentiate between linen and
mercerized cotton on the cone?

The postal codes for Aalst, in the SE of the Netherlands, are 5308 XX,
where XX are two varying uppercase letters, and nearby is 5305 XX and 5307
XX. The postcode 9052 XX (with two letters again) is in the Grouw region,
up in the NW. Also, postcodes were introduced into the Netherlands in 1976
-- any idea how old your thread is?

WRT the plastic cone: polyethylene, which the cone is likely to be, was
re-discovered in 1933, so Lorri's thread might well predate the take-over
by Coats. I'd be surprised if they were still using "FFR" without adding a
"Coats" label somewhere if the cone was from after 1960 (another argument
against the postcode suggestion).

Oh I do love some good sleuthing! Thanks Lorri!!

I went to get some 'known' 80/0 cotton (Brok), did the burn test, they both
burned the same.
But I noticed the FFR is much larger the size than the Brok. The 'pull to
break' test was good, it is very sturdy.

Thank you for the suggestions Nancy, I should have thought of them before I
even ask my questions.

Lorri

FFR is an acronym for the company ( Filature et Filteries Réunies), and I
think "Aalst" is the name of the town. "9052" is probably their stock or
product number.

80/2 is surely the weight, "Wit" and "Blanc" = white

"ca 2500M" = about 2500 meters ("circa" = about)

and I would guess "Brillante" means optic white or bleached. If it's cream
now, I expect it's yellowed because of how it was stored or perhaps just age.

As you can see, the company was taken over by Coats in the 60s. Since your
cone is plastic, I assume the thread has been made under the Coats banner.
The number 9052 could be a stock number, as Nancy suggests, but since it comes
directly after the place-name “Aalst”, I would not be surprised if it was
the European equivalent of a Zip code.

2018-09-03 Thread N.A. Neff
AMEN. As a published author, I can attest that it was very frustrating to
see a couple of errors after publication in one of my books. But errata are
a fact of life -- we're none of us perfect, and it's important that
corrections be shared so others don't waste time and energy struggling with
the same issues. One of the consolations I took away from others' pointing
out my errors was that it showed they were reading the book! which is
flattering when you think about it. For us to be studying a book so
intently that we find errors, and to be making lace from a pattern book,
proves that the author has produced something worthwhile, something the
community is finding useful. Armed with this realization, I think most
authors find errata useful in that second editions can be made that much
better by fixing the issues found.

[lace] Corbett’s Flanders

2018-09-03 Thread Susan
Just to clear the air, we’re all in this together & need each other to move
ahead with lace. I don’t think this is criticism so much as it is an
acknowledgment that stuff happens when writing, proofreading & publishing lace
texts! As a beginner, I would never question the teacher—in this case, the
book—because he/she is the expert. Unfortunately, over the past year, I have
found several “anomalies” while working various patterns. That’s a lot of angst
for a beginner! Personally, I am more sad than mad because I am certain the
lace author has sweat bullets to make the information available & he/she is
likely mortified that gremlins crept into the book. I just wish that there was
a “Central Repository of Errata” online. It would be a blessing to us all. In
the meantime, I must develop a more discerning eye (not critical eye!) when
setting up a new pattern. And thank you again, fellow Arachneans, for helping
me move ahead. Sincerely, Susan Hottle USA

Re: [lace] Guttermans Threads

2018-09-03 Thread Brenda Paternoster
There are lots of different threads made by Gütermann. The cotton threads
and the silk threads are fine for lacemaking so long as the thickness is
suitable for your pricking (though most are Z twist to suit sewing machines
and a few lacemakers really prefer S twist thread on bobbins). The polyesters
are OK if you expect the finished lace to get frequent laundering, although
lace made from polyester does have a ‘hard’ feel to it, and the metallics
are good for accents/gimps.

Amongst people who sew, Gütermann thread is generally reckoned to be as good
as any.

[lace] Brainstorming about color

2018-09-03 Thread Susan
There are color theory resources online & https://www.canva.com is one or check
your local library. Get a general idea ahead of time, make up the lace, then
audition your completed piece in a fabric or craft store. JoAnn’s, Michael’s &
Hobby Lobby have reasonable selections. Even if you don’t purchase fabric from
them, you can utilize their bolts for color combos. The length of the
variegation determines the overall value of the piece so selecting your
foundation fabric from the spool appearance may prove inaccurate. The type of
lace you are making will also be a factor in your results because of the thread
paths. Is it mostly cloth stitch, half stitch or cloth & twist? Our guild has
experienced this when teaching Girl Scouts with variegated threads. We never
know what results to expect! Hope this helps & best wishes with your project.
Will look for it on Flickr. . Sincerely, Susan Hottle USA
