RE: [lace] Flickr account - decision made!

2019-01-18 Thread J-D Hammett
Hi Sue,

Thank you very much for taking on this task. I have sent $5 towards your costs
via Paypal. I have not been very active in Arachne lately through personal
circumstances, but I always read all emails and love spending time with all
the eye-candy in our photo albums (especially when feeling a little ‘down’).

Also, thank you Clay for your years of work and dedication to Arachne.

Happy lace making,

Joepie.

[lace] Droschel strips, but also Pt. d'Angleterre

2019-01-18 Thread Devon Thein
Another mystery. A piece presents itself as a Brussels applique, but
the droschel is actually worked around the motifs, sewing into the
edges of them during construction. However, when viewed from a
distance, there are faint lines indicating the droschel was made in
strips. I always thought that if the droschel was made in strips, then
the lace motifs were sewn on to them.
I have posted photos and an inquiry on the laceioli.ning site.
In a way, it makes sense because there are large swaths of the
droschel so that it would be very hard to make it all with massive
numbers of bobbins on a pillow at once. It seems like this would be a
sensible innovation during the late 18th century when there were very
delicate motifs and lots of mesh.
It seems as though extra thread is carried along the edge of the motif
to then enter the droschel. Am I interpreting this correctly?
Has anyone else enountered this?
 Here is the link.

[lace] Flickr account - decision made!

2019-01-18 Thread Sue Babbs
I am tremendously grateful to Clay Blackwell for all the years she has hosted
this Flickr unlimited storage account. She has done so as a way of giving
back to the lace world. Thank you so much for doing this, Clay.

This morning I investigated having several free Flickr accounts. It would
mean, downloading all the photos from our existing account uploading them to
free Flickr accounts and typing in all the info all over again. I remember
how much work it was when we last moved storage platforms of the photos and I
went through that process. I have NO desire to do it ever again, especially
as we have a lot more stored photos than we had in 2012!

Quarterly charges used to be $6.95 every 3 months, but changed to $17.95 every
3 months in October 2018, which is what triggered Clay’s request to me
earlier this week.

So having spoken with Clay on the phone, I have now taken over this Flickr Pro
account and decided to go with the annual charge of $49.99, which I will pay
this year. It is due in April. I may ask for donations to help fund it in
April 2020. It allows us to store unlimited photos.

This way we can keep storing photos in the same place and keep all the
information that has been written about them. Our Flickr account
https://www.flickr.com/photos/lacemaker/ is always listed at the bottom of
each Arachne email. If you want to upload photos – or keep your photos
current – contact me for login details. They are the same as they have been

[lace] Lace in Sri-Lanka

2019-01-18 Thread miriam gidron
I don't know much about lace in Sri-Lanka, but several years ago my son was
there for several weeks.

During one of his strolls into the woods he came upon a small hut and a
woman making bobbin lace. She allowed him to take her picture and he asked
her if she could sell him a pair of bobbins (for me).
Communication was a bit difficult because she couldn't speak English but
some how they managed. He was quite surprise to see lace made in such a
remote place. He showed her a picture of my lace but said he was a bit
embarrassed because hers was of very low quality.

At the time I posted a picture on Facebook. If any of you are on Facebook I
can post it again.

Regards from Israel,
Miriam

Re: [lace] Flickr account for photos

2019-01-18 Thread Clay Blackwell
I am so sorry for all of the confusion about the funding of our Flickr account!
I simply misread something and jumped to the wrong conclusion!

So please. Do not try to set up an account to reimburse me! The cost is
really not an issue for me, because it is very small. (Less than $20 a year)

What IS important to me is that you do not use our lace Flickr account as
personal storage for every picture you have. It is easy enough to set up your
own account if that is what you need. And unless you overload your own
account, it is free. But please do use the Arachne account to highlight WIPs
and remove (your own) old pictures as new ones are created!

Happy Lacemaking!

Clay

[lace] Hacking followup, plus lace

2019-01-18 Thread Alice Howell
Thanks for all the concern.   Some people responded to the request, and
found out that they were to buy a card, take a picture of it and send it with
the pin number from the back of the card.  That's how the hacker would be
able to cash in the card.  As far as I know at this time, no one actually
fell for it.  The instructions were so weird that no one who got that far
believed it was a real request.  And the specified store does not exist in my
area.

Sorry for all the fuss.  The main thing that came out of it was that I heard
from some friends I hadn't talked to in ages.
Now, back to lace.  I'm trying to choose a new project to keep me busy for
the next few months.  Another lappet from the Herrmansberg book is
tempting.  And I'm trying to design a pattern for a small lampshade.

I've been asked to attend the next Tatting Quarterly meeting to teach a lady
bobbin lace since the tatters will be too busy to do it.  (The Portland Lace
Society tatters have formed a sub-group that meets quarterly to do advanced
tatting techniques.)  We don't want to turn down anyone who wants to learn.
